History:
(Warhammer 40,000: Marneus Calgar#1 (fb) -
BTS) <centuries before the main story> - Born to the richest house
on Nova Thulium and served by the helot Tacitan, Marneus wished to become
a space marine, which involved a rigorous testing process that less than
1% achieved. Marneus father hired the renown trainer Crixus to help
Marneus achieve this end.
(Warhammer 40,000: Marneus Calgar#1 (fb) -
BTS) Marneus was known for stating, "Anyone
can quote scripture; the point is to make it live in your heart."
Chafing under taunts from "friends" Kato and Severan
that he gained everything he had from his parents' wealth and that anyone
could achieve what he accomplished with such privileges, Marneus used his
entire inheritance to also pay for similar training for Kato, Severan and
Tacitan. The boys were all approximately 11 years old.
(Warhammer 40,000: Marneus Calgar#1 (fb) ) - Marneus
bested Severan in a contest of first blood, acting defensively until
manipulating him for a simple strike. Severan stated that he had had
Marneus retreating for the entire duel and that if it had been a fight, he
would have won and that he was the warrior. Marneus reminded him that
warriors fight the battles they are given, not the ones they wish. Both
Kato and Severan mocked Marneus' privilege and sanctimonious nature, at
which point Marneus announced to them that he was paying to have his
trainer train Kato, Severan and Tacitan.
>
Kato ridiculed Marneus' decision to include a servant
when such blade tutors were for noble sons, but Marneus reminded him of
his point that the honor of being a space marine should not be bought by
mere privilege. Even Tacitan told Marneus that he did not need to do this
and that it was too great an expense, but Marneus reminded him that the
master made the decisions and further advised him that he would not thank
him for what lied ahead.
The group then met Crixus, who told them that , though
he had failed to become a space marine, he had been charged to train
others from the mistakes he had learned, and that he had sworn an oath
that his life was forfeit if any of his charges were rejected: All who
trained with him would either become neophytes of would die. He then took
them to Nova Thulium's smallest moon habitable moon, the harsh Thulim
Minor, after advising them that they had just short of a year before the
marines arrived to take their aspirants. He started their test
immediately, dropping them off and challenging them to outrun the Ambull
and meet him on the other side of the valley.
(Warhammer 40,000: Marneus Calgar#2 (fb) - BTS) - Kato
suggested hiding in the tunnels, but Marneus remembered hearing something
about the Ambull boring through the Earth to find its prey. Seeking
something else upon which the Ambull might feed, the quartet ran through a
den of wolves. Although the wolves went after them, the Ambull went after
the wolves, and the youths got away. Severan was attacked by either a wolf
on the Ambull, and Marneus pulled him free, although Severan received a
deep cut on the right side of his face/head.
(Warhammer 40,000:
Marneus
Calgar#2 (fb)) - Severan and Kato accused Marneus of deliberating waiting
until Severan had been slashed thusly before helping him. Regardless, they
made it to Crixus, who congratulated them, noting that all four surviving
the Ambull was rare. Crixus then gave them their first two lessons: taking
shifts manning the "heavy stubber" (a large gun atop their base); and how
to seal a wound with a blow torch.
Marneus and the others were trained to fight off the
wolves with anything with a sharp edge or anything that could be used as
bludgeon. They enjoyed the honing of their martial skills.
Less enjoyable was the "hardening of the soul: Pain to
burn away pain." Tasks to make them strong. Tasks to make them stand
straight together.
They were left overnight, one exposed to the cold to
survive, bound, while the others guarded them; with swapping each night.
As the months went on, other aspirants -- those that
outran the Ambull -- joined them, with most dying out progressively, but
their numbers did slowly grow, and those who survived grew strong and grew
together. However, Marneus and Tacitan seemed to lag behind somewhat, and
when they came in from a run long behind the others, Crixus sent them to
run it again, and Kato and Severan continued to mock Marneus, with Severan
noting that he was broken and would soon be dead.
On the next run, Marneus and Tacitan slew a pack of
wolves that attacked them, and Tacitan told Marneus that he knew he was
slowing him down and that Marneus could match Severan and Kato without
him. When Tacitan told Marneus to leave him if the moment came when his
strength failed him, but Marneus helped him up, telling him that his
strength was his brother beside him and that no marine would ever leave a
brother. Taking Marneus hand to help himself back to his feet, Tacitan
told Marneus that he was a born leader and that while he could fail
himself, he could never fail Marneus.
Marneus and Tacitan found spiritual strength in each
other, but they observed how Severan and Kato found a strength for
physical. When Marneus and Tactican asked Crixus how they could become
larger and stronger like them, Crixus told them to ask them. However,
looking upon Kato and Severan, Marneus and Tacitan found them to be
animalistic killers.
(Warhammer 40,000: Marneus Calgar#2 (fb) - BTS)
- The night before the Angels of Death were to begin the actual aspirant
selection, Marneus and Tacitan stayed up late, talking about what it would
be like to see one of them, but eventually they slept.
(Warhammer 40,000: Marneus Calgar#2 (fb)) - Awakening to
find all of their peers gone, Marneus and Tacitan tracked them into the
tunnels into which Crixus had forbade them to enter. Motivated by their
peers' prior entry, Marneus and Tacitan avoided traps along the way,
passing through corroded and blasted remnants of an old base before coming
upon a cultist ritual over a black altar. They were then confronted by
Crixus, who swiftly battered the two of them unconscious.
As Severan restrained Marneus, Kato and a four others
held down Tacitan on the altar, as Crixus revealed his true past and
motivations in preparations to sacrifice them both.
Crixus stated that though he had passed every test and
was the finest warrior of his year, he was considered too pure of a killer
to be a space marine. After spending decades training warriors for the
false emperor, Crixus saw visions and apparently learned the truth of Lord
Khorne.
Crixus further explained that slaying Marneus and
Tacitan was the final test for the six. When Severan told Marneus if he
begged that he would make it quick, Marneus instead smashed his head back
into his nose, after which he leapt on the altar and helped Tacitan fight
off the others. However, Crixus then stabbed Marneus through the back and
out through his xiphoid region.
Tacitan grabbed Marneus and leapt off a cliff into the
water below. Tacitan pulled him to the edge and told him they would close
his wound, but Marneus knew that it was over and his last words were,
"Marneus Calgar will never be a Space Marine."
Unwilling to accept this, Tacitan resolved to take his
friends name -- who had saved his life so many times -- to honor it and
become a marine.
(Warhammer 40,000: Marneus Calgar#3 (fb)) - When
Crixus and his bloody charges found Marneus' corpse, Severan was
distraught as he had had a vision of himself slaying Marneus. Kato told
him to desecrate the corpse if it made him feel better, but Crixus
exhorted the youths to find Tacitan as the black altar needed the blood of
one more to fuel their ascension. Ultimately, Tacitan slew two of his
former peers and used a communication center to report the presence of
enemies of the emperor, and the already nearby Space Marines arrived and
slew Crixus.
Crixus blood fueled the altar, which generated a vortex
that slew Severan and Kato; averting his eyes after a second, Tacitan was
brought to the surface by the space marine while the underground caverns
collapsed.
(Warhammer 40,000: Marneus Calgar#2 (fb) - BTS) - After
Tacitan, as the new Marneus Calgar, indeed became a space marine, a statue
was placed in the Calgar Estates, with a plaque noting how he had died at
age 12 in service to his emperor.

Helot is a term from ancient Sparta
referring to a class of serfs somewhere between slaves and citizens.
Courtesy of Loki, who gave me the
background on Warhammer 40,000 and recommended profiling this Marneus
Calgar to represent that series:
Warhammer
began as a tabletop miniatures wargame launched in 1983 by British company
Games Workshop - if you are unfamiliar with tabletop miniatures wargames,
imagine the people who reenact Civil War battles using figurines. Games
Workshop itself was launched in 1975 and initially manufactured boards for
games like backgammon, but within a few years they got involved with the
growing role-playing craze that had started with Dungeons & Dragons.
Games Workshop became the official UK distributor for TSR, the company
that owned D&D, and then got the license to reprint several other
American RPGs, as printing copies in the U.K. was cheaper than importing
the American editions. They also co-founded Citadel Miniatures, releasing
small lead figures that could be used for those RPGs, and in 1977 began
publishing the U.K.'s preeminent RPG magazine, White Dwarf, still in
publication today. In 1983 they realized that rather than just reprint
other people's games under license they could produce their own - though
they still continued to do reprints too. Warhammer was
their first game, though at that point as mentioned a miniatures wargame
rather than RPG. Their first RPGs were the superhero RPG Golden Heroes
(which was illustrated by some famous comic artists including Brian
Bolland and Alan Davis), and then the first Judge Dredd RPG. In 1986 they
made a RPG version of Warhammer, titled Warhammer Fantasy
Roleplay, set in a world inspired by Lord of the Rings, Elric, etc.
In 1987 they released Warhammer 40,000 (commonly abbreviated
to Warhammer 40K or just 40K), switching out the fantasy setting
for an excruciatingly grimdark SF setting - though still with all the
standard fantasy races like Elves, Dwarves, Orcs, etc., just with a SF
patina added to them.
The
first Warhammer novel, The Other, was released in 1989, and the
first 40K novel, Deathwing, in 1990. The first
(AFAIK) Warhammer comic was Warhammer Magazine,
published by Games Workshop themselves from 1998 through 2004; Boom
Studios took up the license and published a number of one-shots and
miniseries from 2006 through 2009; Titan Comics had their run from 2016 to
2018; and finally Marvel in 2020 and 2021. Oh, and there was a 40K
animated movie, Ultramarine, released in 2010.
The
titular Marneus Calgar is a high ranking Space Marine, first introduced in
White Dwarf#97 (January 1988), and created by David Wise and Rick
Priestly. His first comic appearance seems to be in
Boom's Warhammer 40,000: Defenders of Ultramar#1 (2008), but
there might be earlier ones, as the Warhammer comics don't seem
to have been properly indexed anywhere I can find. - this is the guy
who reveals he was born Tacitan and took his friend's name. He's the
main focus of the miniseries and has been around in
the Warhammer 40K mythos for decades.

its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25th
anniversary 's celebratory event.
