History:
(Amazing Adult Fantasy I#7/2) - As tensions between the United States
and the Soviet Union seemed to be increasing to rise and a crisis was
growing in Berlin, Sidney Blake was fearful that the entire Earth would
be destroyed in nuclear war. Determined to spare his own life, he
invested his money into the finest possible bomb shelter. His bomb
shelter was so well-protected that it could survive even a direct hit
from a nuclear bomb. Inside the shelter he had enough provisions and
oxygen to survive for five years.
Without delay, Blake entered the bomb shelter, determined that he would enjoy perfect security inside and refuse to admit anyone else. With the shelter's scientific instruments he would know when the fallout had passed and he could safely return to the surface. For several months, he lived in luxury in the shelter, reading books and watching movies to entertain himself. At last, his instruments informed him of atomic explosions. He assumed this meant the atomic war had happened. Due to the number of explosions, he assumed all life on the surface had been eliminated.
After six months of waiting, his instruments told him that the air was pure and clean so he could safely exit the shelter. Blake climbed to the surface and, to his shock, he found the world appeared to be completely intact, just as he had left it, but with no people. He drove fruitlessly around cities but found no sign of another human being living there. Realization dawned on him: he was now the only human left on Earth. Returning to the bomb shelter and still wondering why everyone was gone, Blake found a note pinned to the outside of the shelter entrance. The note informed him that a new planet had been discovered where human lifespans could be extended for centuries. The entire population of Earth had moved to this planet. Attempts were made to contact him but he had paid no attention. Blake realized that the "explosions" his instruments registered were from the space ships taking off from Earth. Blake glumly realized that the rest of humanity would live on for centuries in peace while he would grow old alone.
