First Appearance: Spellbinders#4 (August, 2005)

Powers/Abilities: A magical being, Apocaledon is apparently composed of living plants. Perhaps his frame is wood, with more of a leafy exterior.

He can sense the nature and magical powers (or lack thereof) of other beings by their scent (although he could not detect Kim Vesco's latent power).

He is apparently powerful enough to fight off or destroy most beings, and was likely superhumanly strong, durable, immune to many forms of conventional injury (and potentially to some mystic assaults as well) but he did not demonstrate his abilities in his limited appearances.

apocaledon-sb-snickers    He was not a match for the power of a magical thief like Chad Barrow, who could steal and/or mimic the powers of other magical beings.

He enjoys processed snacks created by humans, such as Snickers candy bars.

Height: Unrevealed (approximately 8-9')
Weight: Unrevealed (it is unrevealed how much of him is leafy vegetation vs. solid wood, etc.)
Eyes: He appears to have glowing yellow-orange irides/irises surround a dark central presumed pupil, and the glow of the irides lends a red tinge to the surrounding black region (comparable to the sclera)
Hair: None (covered in green vegetation)apocaledon-sb-fullest

History:
(All-New Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe#10 /
Spellbinders#4 (fb) - BTS) - Although many witches and warlocks fled the persecution they faced in 17th century Salem, Massachusetts to found the town of New Salem in the Rocky Mountains, families of other-dimensional witch refugees eventually migrated to Salem in an attempt to flee the Thief, a parasitic mutant who could steal their magical essences and began destroying their native dimension.

(Spellbinders#4 (fb) - BTS) - These new witch families brought with them the Pillar of Smoke, a magical artifact visible only to witch bloodlines that young witches touched at the age of 5 years in order to learn the nature of, and activate, their latent mystic powers.

The witches hid the Pillar of Smoke within Salem’s forests and left Apocaledon, a giant magical being made of living vegetation, to guard the Pillar.

(Spellbinders#4 (fb) - BTS) - Apocaledon encountered the witches of Salem as they traveled to the Pillar of Smoke, each time asking who they were and threatening to devour them.

Nonetheless, by the 21st Century, the local high school witches became familiar with Apocaledon, referring to him as "Kally."

(Spellbinders#4 (fb) - BTS) - After the recently arrived Kim Vesco, whom the locals believed to be a witch who had not yet discovered her powers, had survived multiple attempted murders (by Chad Barrow, a modern incarnation of the Thief), locals Paul, Foley, Lisa Beth, Mason, Mink and Renata took her with them to visit the Pillar of Smoke.

(Spellbinders#4 - BTS) - The locals told Kim the origins of the Pillar of Smoke.

apocaledon-sb-nopass(Spellbinders#4) - As they got closer, the locals discussed the guardian, after which Mason guided Kim to see him, and then Apocaledon rose and asked on whom he would be feeding that day. Liza Beth asked if they had to go through this whole "Billy Goat Gruff" thing every time they came up there.

Apocaledon told them they he did not know "this one" (Kim) and that she was not one of the bloodline. Renata argued that Kim was indeed a witch but that she had never touched the pillar, but Apocaledon countered that she was nearly fully grown.

When Liza Beth explained that Kim's parents had never brought her to the Pillar and asked if he couldn't just let them vouch for her, Apocaledon grunted and noted that he liked it not, but that he would accept if Liza Beth spoke for her. Liza Beth told him he was a sweetheart, and she gave him a backpack, telling him to see what Santa had brought him.

Apocaledon advised them that this was a day of ill omen and that the air smelled of blood not spilled; however, when he opened the pack and found Snickers within, his demeanor changed, and he was very pleased.

(Spellbinders#4 - BTS) - As the locals and Kim continued toward the Pillar, Foley explained how the first of their witches came to Salem had put Apocaledon there to protect the Pillar.

(Spellbinders#4) - Apocaledon enjoyed the Snickers until sensing the approach of Chad, at which point he confronted him, growling and insisting that he would not pass.

After Chad advised the guardian that he was going through or around him, Apocaledon detected his scent and fearfully realized what he was.apocaledon-sb-explode

(Spellbinders#4 (fb) - BTS) - Chad cast a spell, injuring and apparently entering the form of Apocaledon.

(Spellbinders#4) - The weakened Apocaledon crawled to the witches, and as he tried to warn them that the Thief was there, Chad exploded out of his form, apparently destroying him.

Comments: Created by Mike Carey and Mike Perkins.

The Spellbinders series fits into Earth-616 continuity, locked into the time of publication (2005) and not part of the sliding timescale. The main story would have occurred at least 6 years before the space flight that empowered the Fantastic Four at the time of this profile's publication in 2026 (and a year before that as each year passes in real time).

It is unrevealed whether Apocaledon was created by the witches who relocated to Salem or whether he was brought there by them. If the latter, his origins are unrevealed.

It would seem that a magical being like Apocaledon could be magically restored, but it remains to be seen whether the characters from Spellbinders will ever be seen again.
    It's a cool series...check it out...it's on Marvel Unlimited.

This profile was completed 05/15/2026, but its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25th anniversary 's celebratory event.
Thanks to Loki for suggesting Apocaledon to represent Spellbinders for the event.
