History:
(Uncanny Avengers III Annual#1 (fb) - BTS) - In 1947, Nazi war criminal Hilda von Hate returned to Earth from an extradimensional hideout and sequestered herself on the island of Tani, mystically enrapturing the locals and transforming them into the entranced, zombie-like Walkers.

(Uncanny Avengers III Annual#1 (fb)) - Having learned of Hilda von Hate's return and her entrancement of the Tani locals into Walkers, detective magician Dakor summoned his former mystic allies and suggested the formation of the heroic Department of the Uncanny in an effort to bring Hilda to justice. The newly-formed Department of the Uncanny then met with American heroes Captain America and the Whizzer as they traveled to Tani to confront Hilda von Hate and her Walkers. Shortly after touching down, the heroes were attacked by a small army of Walkers under Hilda's control. Following Hilda's death, the Walkers were thought cured of their condition and they seemingly returned to normal, unaware that Hilda's death had only made their transformations dormant. In the years that followed, those original Walkers lived happy lives and had children and grandchildren, each of whom were passing the latent, transformative Walker "virus."

(Uncanny Avengers III Annual#1) - In the modern era, decades after Hilda von Hate's death, random people associated with the original Walkers' bloodlines began transforming into Walkers and infecting others via a bite or scratch, leading the still-living Ghost Dancer to suspect that the Walkers had not truly been cured but rather, their infection had only become dormant upon Hilda's death and they had passed on the Walker infection to succeeding generations. Summoning his former ally the Emerald Warlock as well as his successor, Doctor Voodoo and his Avengers allies Steve Rogers and Quicksilver, the Ghost Dancer informed them of his theory and suspicion that the root cure for the Walkers was still on the island of Tani. As the Walker infection grew worldwide, the heroes flew to Tani, which had since become a resort island, and briefly battled the Walkers there until Doctor Voodoo mystically enveloped a large group of Walkers in a force field so they could focus on finding and stopping Hilda von Hate. The Avengers dealt with the remaining Walkers while Ghost Dancer and Emerald Warlock entered the main ballroom of a nearby hotel, only to be confronted by Erida, goddess of hate, who confirmed that Hilda von Hate had long since died. Revealing that Hilda had harnessed her power to create the Walkers, Erida informed the two mystics that Hilda's death had left a portal to the Earthly plane open that Erida slowly forced more open over the decades until she was able to fully manifest on Earth and assume control of Hilda von Hate's Walkers. Eventually, Ghost Dancer and the Emerald Warlock absorbed Erida's hate energy between them, rendering it inert, defeating Erida and restoring the Walkers to normal.
