History: (Tales of Suspense I#4/2) - In
2500 A.D., a human exploration team sent out from Earth entered a star
cluster in system 472 and spotted an uncharted planet. Their ship made
a pass at the planet and found it to be similar to Earth, with lush
vegetation but otherwise seemingly uninhabited.
A team of four, led by Jim Stack,
landed in a scout craft and began exploring by following a stream. They
observed petals that looked like giant geraniums and noted that the
grass was greener than even on Venus. One of the crew, named Ralph,
unexpectedly disappeared, and Stack at first thought nothing of it, as
there were no dangers in sight. But then Fred went missing as well, and
Stack called their vessel for help.
By the time Lester Wells and the others got to their location, Jim and his remaining companion Bob were gone as well. Those aboard analyzed the data they'd gathered and realized that the trees on this planet had a nervous system and could move. The ship got back into orbit and searched for their missing crew members, eventually finding them held captive by the tree-like species. Wells fired the ship's hyper-afterburners, producing fire and noise which scared the trees away. The four captives quickly ran back to their ship and departed the planet.
Comments: Created by Jack Kirby. The surface gravity scales proportionately to the celestial body's mass and inversely proportionately to radius squared. The planet's mass is not known, but assuming Earth-like density the comparison could be inferred from the radius. The planet's diameter is given at 7,048 miles, so the radius would be half of that at 3,524 miles, while the Earth's radius is 3,959 miles. 3,524 / 3,959 = 0.8901.
The planet has a rotational speed of 1,500 miles per hour, which for the given diameter would make the length of day equal to 14 hours and 45 Earth minutes.
The establishing view of the planet depicts another similar-sized celestial body in closed proximity and a few less-defined spheres in the distance, which could represent either the planet's moons or other planets within the same system.
Profile by HBK123.CLARIFICATIONS:
System 472 planet should not be confused with:
(Tales of Suspense I#4/2) - The dominant life form on
their planet, these trees could think and move, having a nervous system
and being not rooted in the ground. They had green leafy crowns and
long vine-like appendages that were strong enough to fully restrain
adult humans. The trees were afraid of fire and operated in groups, but
did not utilize any technology, as the planet appeared uninhabited from
orbit.
When four human explorers landed on their planet, the trees were able to isolate and capture them one at a time without the others spotting them. They held their captives close together, but they were scared off by the arrival of their ship, allowing the humans to escape.
