History:
(Combat Casey I#33/5 (fb) - BTS) - Roanhorse was a soldier who fought
in the Korean War, serving in Dog Company under the command of Captain
Rocke. He befriended Combat Casey and Percival "Penny" Pennington and
taught "Penny" how to communicate using smoke signals, how to start a
fire without matches and how to weave baskets.
(Combat Casey I#33/5) - One day, Roanhorse accompanied Casey and "Penny" on a patrol and he built a concealed pit in the fashion of an Apache bear trap. The three men paused near the pit for lunch, as Roanhorse believed if they seemed unaware of enemy troops, nearby Chinese soldiers might unwittingly walk into his trap. Sure enough, two enemy soldiers attempted to capture them but, as they approached the three soldiers, they walked into Roanhorse's trap. When "Penny" told Casey about all of the other skills Roanhorse had taught to him, Casey mused that he should have learned how to build a bear trap because he doubted the other skills would ever prove useful in the field.
Casey, "Penny" and Roanhorse brought their two prisoners back to Captain Rocke for interrogation. With what he learned from the prisoners, Rocke sent Casey and "Penny" out on another patrol to learn more about a "sneak attack" the Chinese were planning. Unable to get back to their own lines in time to save Dog Company from the attack, "Penny" used smoke signals to send a message to Roanhorse. Roanhorse correctly interpreted "Penny"'s message to learn the Chinese were coming by the river on a series of rafts and shared the intelligence with Captain Rocke. When the enemy forces came down the river, Captain Rocke and Dog Company were prepared and captured the Chinese forces.
