MECHANICAL WATCHDOG

Classification: Terrestrial technology

Creator: Unidentified Nazi scientists

User/Possessors: Red Skull (Johann Shmidt)

First Appearance: Tales of Suspense I#90/2 (June, 1967)

Powers/Abilities/Functions: The Mechanical Watchdog was a robot drone designed with an animal-like structure. It had six spider-like legs; twin steel tentacles emerged from the drone's face; an antenna atop the robot's head served as the robot's primary means of gathering sensory data - without the antenna, the robot was "blind."

History:

(Tales of Suspense I#90/2 (fb) - BTS) - The Mechanical Watchdog was a robot drone evidently built during World War II for eventual use for the Red Skull. It was kept on Sea Gull Isle inside of an anti-gravity vessel within the Red Skull's mountain base on the isle. The watchdog remained on Sea Gull Isle until the Red Skull was ready to use it in recent years.

(Tales of Suspense I#90/2) - When the Red Skull took command of the anti-gravity vessel and set out for Manhattan to deploy his Plastic Bubble Projector weapon upon the city, Captain America boarded the vessel to stop him. The Mechanical Watchdog found the Captain inside one of the vessel's corridors and ensared him in its tentacles, then hurled him at a wall, attempting to crush him. Captain America somersaulted off the wall and landed on the watchdog's back, then used his shield to destroy the watchdog's antenna, blinding it. Using the robot as a springboard, he leaped up into an aperture in the ceiling to resume his pursuit of the Red Skull.

Comments: Created by Stan Lee, Gil Kane and Joe Sinnott.

The Mechanical Watchdog bears a passing resemblance to Hydra's Hunter drone (albeit the Hunter had wheels, not legs). Perhaps the Hunter was improved upon from Nazi blueprints Hydra acquired.
