History:

(Rawhide Kid I#18/3) - One night, Hammer Hogan went into a saloon in Border City, Texas and began to throw his weight around, shoving around other men. When he saw the Rawhide Kid seated at a table, he decided to pick on him, not realizing who he was. Claiming it was his favorite table, Hammer told the Kid to get up but he refused, so Hammer knocked over the table. When the Kid rose to face him, Hammer claimed he was the only man in the west to have ever out-drawn the Rawhide Kid. Bemused, the Kid asked for more details and Hammer said he had the Kid covered before he could even touch his gun, then sent him crawling out of town begging not to be shot. Hearing this, the Rawhide Kid said if he'd done it once, he shouldn't have much trouble doing it again. When Hammer asked him to explain himself, the Kid identified himself as the Rawhide Kid. Hammer didn't believe him, believing the Rawhide Kid to be a much taller and muscular figure.

The Rawhide Kid called out Hammer as a liar, ordering him to take back what he'd said about making the Kid crawl, but Hammer refused and went for his gun. Before Hammer could finish drawing his pistols, the Rawhide Kid drew both of his guns and shot Hammer's guns from his hands just as he began to raise them. Next, the Kid punched Hammer in the stomach, then hit him in the jaw and knocked him unconscious, sliding his body across the bar's countertop.

After the Rawhide Kid rode out of town, Hammer remained unconscious and people who had seen their fight began to describe what they'd witnessed for the town sheriff, but they all exaggerated the Rawhide Kid's appearance and abilities.
