GYRAXIANs
. . . Classification: Semi-humanoid extraterrestrial race Location/Base of Operations: Planet Gyrax, unidentified star system, unidentified galaxy Known Members: Bikwen; Affiliations: Beta Ray Bill, Lockjaw Enemies: Unidentified dragon creature, Dr. Strange of Earth-10011 ("Cancerverse"), Void (Robert Reynolds; dark aspect of the Void) First Appearance: Annihilation - Scourge: Beta Ray Bill#1 (February, 2020) Powers/Abilities: Gyraxians are semi-humanoid beings who possess a lifespan of 10 years at most (see comments). They appear to be mammalian. They have a pair of spikes projecting inferiorly from the lateral aspect of their mandibles (downward from their lower jaws). It is unclear whether these projections are bone or soft tissue. Similarly, the possess a pair of blunt
projections that appear to originate from what would be the zygomatic
arch (cheek bone). They apparently possessed the technology to create skyscrapers, but they apparently lacked any significant means of self-defense. At least some members have some skills as sculptors. |
. . . Traits: The Gyraxians are peaceful and serene beings, living harmonious lives. They also liked to
celebrate, with week-long feasts and parties, filled with revelry,
dance and drink (notably mead). They are prone to worshipping those who protect them, and they seek to maintain the presence of such protectors on their world, even creating fake threats to try to convince a protector to stay longer. They do not appear to prioritize dental care. .
Type: Bilaterally symmetric semi-humanoid bipeds |
History: (Annihilation - Scourge: Beta Ray Bill#1 (fb)
- BTS) <At least one week before the main story> - An
unidentified space dragon threatened the Gyraxians. The Asgardian
magic-powered Korbinite Beta Ray Bill and the Inhuman canid Lockjaw came to the rescue of the Gyraxians. (Annihilation - Scourge: Beta Ray Bill#1) <One week before the main story> - As Gryaxian leader Bikwen assured his people that their god would bring them salvation, Beta Ray Bill and Lockjaw confronted and ultimately destroyed the dragon when it refused to depart peacefully ( possibly because it didn't speak whatever language Bill was speaking). (Annihilation - Scourge: Beta Ray Bill#1 (fb)
- BTS) - To celebrate their god's victory, the Gyraxians held an entire
week of feasts, filled with revelry, dance (and songs sung in their
honor) and lots of pints of mead. Additionally, they built at least one statue in honor of Beta Ray Bill and Lockjaw. Apparently concerned that Beta Ray Bill would eventually depart, Bikwen arranged for a pair of unidentified Gyraxians to design and don a costume to pose as another monstrous threat. (Annihilation - Scourge: Beta Ray Bill#1) - At
the week's end, Bill grew bored and prepared to depart. Bikwen offered
them more food, mead, songs in their hone and another statue, to little
avail, at which point the costumed Gyraxians appeared, scattering the
population with a threatening "Mmmmrraaawww!" Despite Bikwen's pleas for protection, Bill recognized the trickery and
pulled the costume off of the masqueraders. After Bikwen admitted to having arranged the charade in hopes of making them feel needed, Beta Ray Bill noted how the Gyraxians' peaceful and innocent nature reminded him of how his own people used to be, and he promised to do anything to ensure that they stayed that way forever. Before the Bill and Lockjaw could depart, however, a rent in
space occurred, through which emerged Baluurians and the Dr. Strange of
Earth-10011 (the Cancerverse, whose inhabitants worshipped the Many
Angled Ones and who perverted life). Strange traveled to Gyrax and used his energies to afflict the Gyraxians into monstrous beings seeking to force the Cancerverse's life into Bill and Lockjaw. |
.![]() . ![]() Bill and Lockjaw restrained their assaults to prevent harming the Gyraxians who were not in control of their actions. Strange
subsequently fired a powerful mystic spell involving the Wrath of the Vault of
Argento at Bill, which Lockjaw intercepted. . Bill then assaulted and ultimately incapacitated Strange. Bill subsequently encountered the powerful Sentry (or, perhaps his corrupt aspect, the Void, in the Sentry's form) and managed to force him through the closing rift into the Negative Zone, but only by also sending through his hammer, Stormbreaker. |
.![]() As Bill -- deprived of the Asgardian enchantments from Stormbreaker -- reverted to his powerless Korbinite form, Bikwen spoke, "You saved us once more, our glorious god." (Annihilation - Scourge: Beta Ray Bill#1 - BTS) - Before Bill could die in space, a recovered Lockjaw appeared by his side to teleport him to safety in preparation of entering the Negative Zone to retrieve Stormbreaker. |
Comments: Created by Michael Moreci and Alberto Alburqueque.
The reasons for the Gyraxians'
10-year lifespan is unrevealed. Perhaps like certain animal species, or
some specific sub-species, like larger breeds of dogs, that is just
their life cycle, and they start to break down around that time.
Maybe they have a rapid muturation period and a high
rate of cancer, heart disease or degenerative neuromuscular disorders.
Or, perhaps, their somewhat hedonistic life-style, leads to liver or kidney disease or something.
Lockjaw is certainly a big dog, but he is
signficantly larger in this issue than we typically see...maybe it was
that ole Asgardian magic...

CLARIFICATIONS:
The Gyraxians should be distinguished from:
![]() It seemed to possess an Earth-like environment, the temperature, atmosphere and gravity of which was hospitable to both Beta Ray Bill and Lockjaw, although both of them were also apparently comfortable in the cold vacuum of space. After Beta Ray Bill and Lockjaw protected their world and people from an unidentified space dragon, the Gyraxian held a week long feast/party. Dr. Strange of Earth-10011, the Cancerverse, subsequently traveled there and briefly corrupted the Gyraxians. They apparently reverted to normal after Bill incapacitated Strange. Bill also prevented the Sentry/Void from harming Gyrax or its residents. --Annihilation - Scourge: Beta Ray Bill#1 |
.![]() A nearby blue planet with a smaller green moon with a much larger sun is seen in the lower image. It doesn't make much sense (to me) that the sun would appear to be so much closer than the planet which the asteroid was orbiting...so, presumably that was another planet...but, that also seems to be way to big for a planet viewed on the far side of the sun... |
