History:

(Strange Tales I#150 (fb) - BTS) - Agent Bronson was sent by Colonel Nick Fury to Karnopolis, Egypt, to meet with Don Caballero, a seemingly-wealthy party host; Fury suspected Caballero was actually an operative of Hydra (indeed, he proved to be Baron Wolfgang von Strucker) and wanted Bronson to investigate Caballero before he went to the field himself. Bronson attempted to ingratiate himself to Caballero and "constantly" suggested Caballero should invite Nick Fury to one of his parties. Unfortunately for Bronson, he was too obvious in his hints and Strucker soon surmised Bronson was an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. "Don Caballero" agreed to invite Fury to his next party in Karnopolis, but only because it served his own interests.

(Strange Tales I#150) - One night, Bronson snuck off on his own and went to investigate an ancient temple in Karnopolis. Exploring the temple floor, Bronson discovered the Hydra inscription "Cut off a limb, and two more shall take its place." This verified Hydra's presence in the temple, but before Bronson could report back to S.H.I.E.L.D., a seeming statue in the temple became animated, as it was actually a robot controlled by Hydra. Bronson drew his gun and fired at the robot but his bullets had no effect. The robot fired a force beam at Bronson that knocked him unconscious. Baron Strucker ordered his men to place Bronson into a brainwashing unit so that he would forget everything he'd discovered.

(Strange Tales I#153 - BTS) - While Bronson remained trapped in Hydra's dungeons, Baron Strucker assumed John Bronson's appearance using the Epiderm-Mask.

    The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Deluxe Edition I#10 claimed John Bronson's first appearance was Strange Tales I#144. It's always possible Bronson was one of the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents who responded to Nick Fury's plane crash, or one of the coastal defense technicians, but none of the agents who were clearly visible on panel looked like him. The handbook stated he was a level-4 agent.

    The agent seen in Strange Tales I#150 wasn't named, but since he looks like the man whose face Strucker assumed in Strange Tales I#153 and who was said to be in Hydra's dungeon, one must conclude he was the real John Bronson-- although his hairstyle in #150 is quite different from how Steranko drew Bronson's hair in #153.

    One also has to assume that after Strucker's impersonation of Bronson was revealed that S.H.I.E.L.D. eventually liberated him from Hydra; poor guy. For what it's worth, the handbook didn't list him as deceased.
