History:
(Girl Confessions I#33/2 (fb)) - Mary Jane Bromley worked as a typist in an office. One year at the office Christmas party, she noticed her co-worker Grant Kingsley took time to dance and kiss each of the women in the office except for her.

(Girl Confessions I#33/2) - One year later, Mary Jane again went to the office Christmas party. This year, Grant again danced with the other women from her office but never danced with Mary Jane. Mary Jane did accept a dance from Mr. Peters but she yearned to have Grant's attention. She feared that she wasn't beautiful because she was taller than the other women.

Dejected, Mary Jane went home. Although she didn't inform her parents about what had happened at the party, they quickly surmised she'd been ignored by someone she had a crush on. Her parents decided to help Mary Jane overcome her problems and started escorting her to nightclubs. One night, they went to Johnny Griffin's nightclub and Mary Jane saw that all of Griffin's showgirls were 5'9" or taller. Griffin mentioned that he was always looking for more dancers and told Mary Jane she could dance at the club if she was interested.

The following week, Mary Jane was a ladies' club where a model was showing off her dress. One of the other women noted that tall women like Mary Jane could wear anything. Realizing she might have a gift for modeling and through it finally get Grant's attention, Mary Jane decided to become a model. She quit her job as a typist and soon received modeling offers, winding up on the covers of fashion magazines including Mode, Lady and Bazaar. She also received the attention of men such as Joe the photographer and Kenneth Schuster the writer but Mary Jane rejected their attempts to date her because she wanted to win Grant.

Finally, the annual Christmas party came up again and Mary Jane attended. She received attention from all of the men at the party, including Grant, who danced with her. The entire time, Grant enthused over Mary Jane, having seen her photo in magazines. After the dance, Grant kissed her but Mary Jane realized she felt nothing for him. She told Grant she hoped they'd always be friends but she could never be in love with him. Mary Jane had learned that she was truly beautiful and that when she met someone she truly loved, she could win them with her newfound self-confidence.

Comments: Created by an unidentified writer and J. Makowski.

Based on the date of publication, the Christmas at the end of the story was most likely Christmas 1953. That means the Christmas flashback was Christmas 1951 and the Christmas that began the story was Christmas 1952.
