History:

(Kickers, Inc. I#12) - On June 6, 1987, the Alberta Icecutters members Iggy, Mo Jacobs, Josef and Pierre were in Manhattan at a bar called Runyon's when they encountered Jack Magniconte, Beauford Wohl, Thomas Smythe and Dallas Corbin of the New York Smashers and Kickers, Inc. The Icecutters began jeering the Kickers, accusing them of putting their business interests ahead of their football careers, claiming the Smashers probably would have lost the Super Bowl even if Magniconte had played. The two teams got into a fight, although Magniconte mostly held back during the brawl, keeping his superhuman strength in check. Both teams were arrested by the New York Police and placed in cells.

After making bail, Mo Jacobs held a press conference at the police station, gleefully explaining to them why his team had been fighting the four Kickers. When the Kickers made bail, Jacobs accused Jack of being a poor sportsman while on camera. A reporter in the crowd, Meyers, was actually a C.I.A. plant and he suggested the two team compete for a worthy charitable cause.

Meyers' suggestion was soon plastered across newspapers and the Bank of Canada offered to sponsor a relay race in Alberta to raise money for a hospital. The Alberta Icecutters and Kickers, Inc. both agreed to the relay race.

On June 20, 1987, the Alberta Icecutters and Kickers, Inc. met at the starting line as Mr. Terr went over the stakes of the competition with the players and showed them the keys they'd carry. On the first leg of the relay face, Iggy raced against Dallas Corbin. Dallas used an alternate route which proved faster than the route Iggy took and he reached his teammate Beauford before Iggy.

Iggy passed the key to Pierre, who was able to make up time because Beauford had to cut a trail through rough terrain, making it easier for Pierre to follow. Pierre passed his key to Josef, who raced neck-and-neck with Thomas Smythe for a time, but eventually Smythe outpaced Josef, giving the Kickers a great lead going into the final leg of the race.

Jack Magniconte quickly used his superhuman speed to continue his team's lead but he was distracted when the C.I.A. attempted to test and monitor his abilities, drawing him off-course and waylaying him for so long that Jacobs easily outpaced him. Jack's poor performance on the final leg brought terrible press for Kickers, Inc. and Mr. Terr was furious with him for running so late. The Alberta Icecutters won the relay race.

Of all the ways to poorly represent Canada in a comic, the last you should choose is to represent hockey incorrectly - and especially so with Alberta hockey! Alberta had (and still has) two of the nation's top teams (Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers) and all Canadian teams are named for their home city, not their home province. If your remit is, as Jim Shooter claimed, to depict "the world outside your window," then don't make up an obviously fake provincial team; if they'd been, say, "the Medicine Hat Merrymakers" at least they could have been passed off as some little-known local team.

The story's lesser sin is constantly referring to what seems to be the Canadian Rockies as "northern Canada." Central Alberta is north of the USA, but it's not "northern Canada."

"Mr. Terr" might be a fragment of a name-- he's only referred to be name once by Darlene and she might have been cut off before finishing his name.
