History:

(Eternals II#2 - BTS / Eternals II#7 (fb) - BTS) - Ahqlau operated as a spy for the Deviant Priestlord Ghaur, tasked with monitoring his rivals and gathering intelligence to advance Ghaur's secret agenda. To do so Ahqlau rose to prominence as a supposed conspirator, aligned with the anti-priesthood resistance known as the Party of Brother Tode, firmly opposed to Ghaur's growing religious tyranny. During her time within the resistance she formed strategic alliances with key figures such as General Dasrak and Warlord Kro, earning their trust while secretly passing her findings back to Ghaur.

(Eternals II#2) - Ahqlau was present in the City of Toad's Odds Inn when Warlord Kro met with several members of the Party of Brother Tode to discuss what had happened to him after the death of Brother Tode. The party then pointed at Ahqlau, sitting across the bar, noting she had united the resistance against Ghaur.

(Eternals II#5) - Ahqlau met with Deviant artist Yrdisis in her Lemurian studio shortly after the latter's audience with Priestlord Ghaur. Ahqlau expressed interest in Yrdisis' encounter, hoping she had gained insight into the priesthood's motivations. Though Yrdisis felt deflated by the experience and dismissed her artistic talents as "garbage," Ahqlau reminded her of her value to the rebellion and their shared cause, to resist the priesthood's tyranny and break their dark hold over Deviant society. Ahqlau praised Yrdisis' mastery and passion, reinforcing her importance to Kro's underground movement.

(Eternals II#7 - BTS) - Learning Warlord Kro and the Eternal Thena were on the run from the Priesthood, Ahqlau prepared to lure them into a trap as she'd remained his "trusted" contact within the underground resistance network.

(Eternals II#7) - Seeking refuge, Kro brought the Eternal Thena to Ahqlau's residence, confident in their shared purpose. Ahqlau greeted Kro warmly, acknowledging their past connection, but had in fact betrayed him. As the pair entered her quarters, they were ambushed by Deviant priesthood forces, whom Ahqlau had tipped off. Caught off guard, Kro and Thena narrowly escaped capture by teleporting away to safety using Thena's Eternal powers, leaving Ahqlau behind with the priest-loyalists.

(Eternals II#9) - Still in service to Priestlord Ghaur, Ahqlau welcomed his return to Lemuria as he arrived with the captive human Margo Damian. With her usual sly demeanor, Ahqlau teasingly asked whether Ghaur, by bringing a human to court, was not overreaching his station. Ghaur dismissed the concern and explained Margo's significance as a tool to manipulate Ikaris. He then ordered Ahqlau to escort Margo to the Molecular Disunifier, so she could be altered to resemble a Deviant and remain hidden. Ahqlau obeyed promptly, leading Margo away without protest.

(Eternals II#10) - Ahqlau was present in Ghaur's laboratory as Margo Damian underwent transformation via the Molecular Disunifier. She observed alongside the scientists as Margo was subjected to the invasive procedure intended to make her appear Deviant. However in a shocking turn of events Margo perished from the process, Ahqlau panicked, fearing Ghaur's fury, and worse, suspecting he might select her as the next test subject. Instead, Ghaur chose Ahqlau's associate Yrdisis, the artist previously seen in Lemuria, as Margo's replacement. Dismissing Ahqlau's timid objection, Ghaur ordered her into the city to locate and bring Yrdisis to him. Ahqlau complied, and with a squad of Deviant guards, successfully apprehended Yrdisis in the streets of Lemuria.

Unbeknownst to them, the Eternal Sersi was watching. Using her illusion powers, Sersi took Yrdisis' appearance and allowed herself to be captured in her place. Back in the lab, the disguised Sersi underwent the transformation process as planned.

Though Ahqlau was initially aligned with the anti-priesthood resistance known as the Party of Brother Tode, firmly opposed to Ghaur's growing religious tyranny, she later appeared to serve Ghaur obediently, even betraying Kro and aiding in the capture of his allies. Although Marvel Atlas I#1 (November, 2007) confirms that she was Ghaur's spy it was never explicitly revealed in the Eternals book. So sure, she is Ghaur's spy but it is possible that Ghaur, whose genetic engineering and mental dominance are revealed to be extraordinarily advanced (as seen in his manipulation of General Dzak), may have exerted subtle or direct control over Ahqlau. Given her temperament and earlier passion for rebellion, it is plausible that her defection was not entirely voluntary, perhaps the result of coercion, mind-control, or a calculated attempt to survive within a regime that no longer tolerated dissent.

The Party of Brother Tode was a dissident faction within Deviant society that opposed the theocratic rule of Priestlord Ghaur. Named after the former Deviant monarch Brother Tode, who ruled during a more secular era prior to Ghaur's rise, the party sought to dismantle the priesthood's power and restore political control to non-religious leadership. Though Brother Tode himself had been a tyrant, the faction used his name symbolically to represent resistance against religious oppression and a return to an earlier sociopolitical order.

That Ahqlau is a difficult name is a surprise to no-one, her name was spelled incorrectly different time througout the Eternals run: "Ahalau" by Yrdisis and "Ahglau" by Kro in Eternals II#5 and "Aqulah" by Ghaur in Eternals II#10.

Ahqlau was part of the Deviant group profile in the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe II#3 (February, 1986).
