S.U.L.T.A.N.

Real Name: Unrevealed

Identity/Class: Human mind transferred into cyborg or robot body, technology user

Occupation: Would-be World-Conqueror; former weapons designer and computer expert

Group Membership: None

Affiliations: Biotrons (creations, agents)

Enemies: Captain America, Nick Fury, SHIELD I, Spider-Man

Aliases: Systematic Ultimate Lawless Takeover of All Nations

Base of Operations: Thunderhead Island (mobile flying base), originally located "on the windswept coast of Maine"

First Appearance: Captain America I#265 (January, 1982)

Powers: SULTAN's robot and cyborg forms possessed superhuman strength (enhanced human) and durability. His actual mind was encoded on a mobile microchip module. When one of his forms was destroyed, or if he wished to escape, the module would exit his current form and inhabit a new one.
SULTAN was a genius in weapons design and computer technology. He created his own robotic forms, the Biotron Constructs (see below), Thunderhead Island (see below), and his own missile system. Because he designed SHIELD's computer and coding system, he could monitor their activities at any time.

History: SULTAN was a former weapons designer for SHIELD I (Supreme Headquarters International Espionage Law-enforcement Division). He designed all of SHIELD's master computer and spy codes. After Nick Fury, the director of SHIELD, rejected some of his plans, he quit and went off on his own. He designed a powerful robotic form for himself, as SULTAN, and built the Biotron Constructs and his island base of Thunderhead. He embarked on his plan to bomb Washington, D.C., intending that the nation would surrender control to him after this demonstration of power. Following this, he would then do the same to the capitols of every nation's government, so that he would rule the world.

(Cap265) - SULTAN teleported Captain America to Thunderhead base, apparently to witness firsthand his takeover of the USA. Spider-Man had witnessed Captain America's disapperance, and tagged him with a Spider Tracer. SHIELD located Spider-Man, and Fury joined forces with him to bring down SULTAN. Fury and Spider-Man were intercepted by Biotron Constructs as they approached Thunderhead Island, and they allowed the Biotrons to bring them in, as the quickest means to reach SULTAN. Once together, Fury initiated a struggle, and Cap and Spidey broke free from their restraints and joined in. SULTAN launched his missile to destroy D.C., and Fury snagged it with a grappling hook so that he might stop it. Spidey grabbed Cap and leapt outside of SULTAN's base to escape the Biotrons' numbers, unaware that it was now in mid-flight, and they plummeted to the ground.
Fury determined that the missile was unarmed and, in fact, a decoy to lead the heroes away from the real bomb, in Thunderhead. Cap and Spidey eventually made it back into Thunderhead and assaulted SULTAN. SULTAN appeared to crumble under their attack, but released his mind module under a cloud of smoke and escaped. Cap and Spidey again abandonned Thunderhead, when it seemed as if it was begining to break apart. On the ground, they were attacked by SULTAN (in a new form) and more of his Biotrons. After seeing an explosion over the horizon, SULTAN told them that Thunderhead had just exploded its nuclear payload in D.C., and that he had succeeded in the first phase of his mission. Cap tackled SULTAN, while Spidey fought the Biotrons. Cap was outmatched in power, but used his shield to block SULTAN's sonic weapon at his fingertips, causing a backlash which blew SULTAN's form apart. He released his mind module, which was destroyed by a blast from Fury. Fury revealed that Thunderhead carried only non-nuclear explosives, and that he had directed SHIELD to destroy it before it could reach D.C.

Clarifications: S.U.L.T.A.N. has no known connections to:

His Biotron Constructs have no known connection to:

Thunderhead Island has no known connection to:

Biotron are robots programmed to serve SULTAN. They can rebuild themselves when damaged, unless their central control unit, in their heads, was destroyed. They are equipped with jet-packs to fly, and skilled with laser weapons. Without SULTAN actively controlling them, they are unable to act. Thus if he is incapacitated, they shut down.

Thunderhead was SULTAN's flying base. It was loaded with explosives and intended to blow up Washington, D.C., but a squad of SHIELD interceptors headed it off, and blew it up over an unpopulated area.
