DESTRUCTOIDS

Classification: Extraterrestrial warships

Creator: The Kree

User/Possessors: Alpha Primitives, Kree Empire and the soldiers of the Kree Empire, Zarek

First Appearance: Silver Surfer III#6 (December, 1987)

Powers/Abilities/Functions: The Destructoids were gargantuan weapons of war. Each Destructoid was manned by hundreds of men. They had two forms. One form was that of a starship and traveled through space until it arrived at its destination. The other was that of a giant roughly humanoid configuration, which may have been only for travel inside a planet's atmosphere. In either form they had great destructive firepower. So much so that two could pacify a primitive defenseless planet.  In their humanoid forms their propulsion came out of the equivalent of their legs, and their blasts came out of the equivalent of their arms. In their starship forms, their propulsion came from the rear while they shot their blasts from the nose of the ship. They probably had the ability to shoot blasts out of other areas and were a force to be reckoned with by normal standards.

History: At some unknown point and time the Kree created the Destructoids as weapons of war, possibly to attack defenseless planets (see comments).

(Silver Surfer III#6) - The planet Zenn-La detected Kree Destructoids headed toward their defenseless planet probably to destroy it. Shalla Bal, empress of Zenn-La alerted the Silver Surfer, whom had vowed to protect his homeworld.

(Silver Surfer III#7) - Three Destructoids kept on their course to Zenn-La. They detected something quite small (the Silver Surfer) heading toward the planet as well. Two of the Destructoids went to pacify Zenn-La while a third stayed behind to deal with the tiny invader. However, the Surfer quickly destroyed the Destructoid that stayed behind to fend him off.

Meanwhile, the other two entered Zenn-La's atmospheres and positioned themselves right over the city. Those manning the two Destructoids thought about how the world was so primitive and insignificant and how scared its inhabitants must have been at their presence. Shalla Bal warned the two Destructoids to leave or face the wrath of their protector. The soldiers manning the Destructoids didn't know what she was talking about, but they soon learned, as the Silver Surfer swooped in and destroyed one of the two remaining Destructoids, flying right through it and energy blasting it simultaneously. He then offered the last Destructoid a chance to surrender, but it hit him with an energy blast instead. The Surfer soon defeated it though, blasting off several parts of it and allowing it to fall to the surface of the planet. He then entered it and told the Kree inside that Zenn-La was under his protection and not to involve it in the Kree/Skrull war. They said that they understood, but it wasn't their call and to go to the Supreme Intelligence with his complaint. Surfer towed the remains of the Destructoid to a place where they would not menace Zenn-La during his absence.

(Realm of Kings: Inhumans#2 (fb) - BTS) - A Destructoid was put in the Northern Hemispheric War Museum.

The Destructoid from the museum got activated when its start-up codes were hacked (presumably by Maximus' agent Doctor Vere). Zarek manned it with Alpha Primitives under control of Vere's Omni-Wave Generator and sent them to attack Hala City with the gargantuan war machine.

(Realm of Kings: Inhumans#2) - The Alpha Primitives commandeered the Destructoid in an attack on Hala City's western suburbs, but it was single-handedly taken down by Gorgon of the Inhumans' Royal Family. Kree cheered for him and Gorgon contacted Karnak and told him to send the Inhuman Elite and bring a big crane to remove the deactivated Destructoid.

Comments: Created by Steve Englehart, Marshall Rogers, Joe Rubinstein.

I believe that this was their only appearance. If so, the only thing they were ever seen doing was trying to destroy a defenseless planet, and even then, there were only three of them; there were probably more though. It is unknown if they were also used as warships for space battles or only to ravage planets, and even then, if it was only defenseless planets or armed ones as well. They don't seem like they could take a highly armed planet unless there were very many of them.

The reason for the attack was that the universe was in the throes of the second Kree/Skrull war and the Kree apparently were destroying things simply to keep them from falling to the Skrulls, even if the places they destroyed had no strategic significance at all. As if the Kree ever needed a reason to decimate a planet...

I searched all my issues containing Kree, and I could not find another appearance of the Destructoids, and though I doubt there are more, it's not out of the question. If you find one, please e-mail me.
