Primary effects: Produce
ghost-like humanoid illusions, like fearful, monstrous ghosts;
reproduce Ikonn's image, probably summoning him.
Collateral effects: The ritual emanated evil magic
that could be detected at few miles of distance, using meditation and
a focus like a magical crystal ball.
History:
(Strange Tales I#145) - The Ritual of Ikonn was performed by
Mister Rasputin several times, to learn it better. The ritual was
considered forbidden.
Mister Rasputin,
descendant of Grigori Rasputin, wanted to master the Illusions of Ikonn
to control people through total fear, then, rule the world. During the
forbidden ritual, Rasputin could create ghost-like horrifying images under
his control, even images resembling Ikonn himself.
When Mister Rasputin settled at the
Greenwich Village, he called again the Illusions of Ikonn during the
Ritual, producing a ghostly form very similar to Ikonn. The evil magic
emitted by the ritual attracted Doctor Strange. It took some time for
Strange to find the origin of the danger and when he arrived found
Rasputin still immersed in the Ritual. Rasputin hurled the illusion
produced by the ritual against strange, but the mystic knew how to treat
it.
Eventually Strange defeated Rasputin.

When Ikonn manifested on the Earth plane, in Doctor Strange II#47, the entire space-time continuum was in danger, due to his enormous reality-bending power. The Ritual of Ikonn might be forbidden because it probably did not only make the illusion of Ikonn appear, but could summon Ikonn himself and/or dissolve the continuum.
