History: (Timeslip story in Avengers II#1 (fb) - BTS) - A military sergeant in World War II, Nick Fury took shrapnel to the face during a mission, costing him an eye and severely scarring the left side of his face. Due to his facial scarring, it became uncomfortable for soldiers to be led by Fury in the light of day and Fury eventually became a covert commando and major player in a most dangerous game. Over the years, Fury secretly brought a sense of reckoning and justice to various military operations including the Bay of Pigs invasion, the Vietnam War, Operation: Desert Storm and many other classified operations in which no one was even aware he was present.

(Timeslip story in Avengers II#1) - Fury eventually grew a beard, covering some of the damage to his face, and he continued to make heroic sacrifices for his country, thinking himself as a hero and that there were no heroes without scars.

Comments: Created by John K. Snyder III.

The divergent point of Nick Fury's home reality occurred when Nick Fury's face was severely scarred by the shrapnel that only took his eye on Earth-616...

Nick Fury's height & weight are approximated from that of his Earth-616 counterpart. Additionally, his eye color is unrevealed, as he was never seen without shadow obscuring his eyes.

While Fury's WWII platoon was not directly named in the Earth-21196 portion of the Timeslip text, the text begins by setting up Fury-616's history to give readers an idea of how things turned out in the main Marvel Universe. In that history, it does say that Sgt. Nick Fury was the leader of the Howling Commandos, suggesting that it's likely his platoon on Earth-21196 was also called the Howling Commandos. Without a bit more specification, however, we really don't know for sure...

Timeslip was a series of text and art pieces shown by Marvel in the mid to late 1990s in which modern artists reimagined classic Marvel characters. Most of the Timeslip stories were printed in Marvel Vision and later collected in the comic one-shot, Timeslip: The Collection. However, I found this Nick Fury one in Avengers II#1 but I could not find it in Marvel Vision (despite the Nick Fury entry suggesting readers pick up Marvel Vision for more Timeslip fun. Granted, I don't own every issue of the series either...) and it was not reprinted in Timeslip: The Collection.

I'm aware that the headshot image in this profile is mostly shown in the main image but I wanted to include as much of Fury's full body as possible in the main image while the headshot image shows a bit more of his chest up than the main does.

This profile was completed 8/22/2021, but its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 20th anniversary 's celebratory event.
