chlree-glx-shield-fullCHLREE

Real Name: Chlree

Identity/Class: Extraterrestrial (Glx) technology-user

Occupation: Prime Theoretician of SHIELD

Group Membership: SHIELD (Society of Higher Interstellar Education and Logistical Development; Cmar Har, Hji, Yoof, unidentified Flb’dbi, unidentified extraterrestrial (tall), unidentified extraterrestrial (short))

Affiliations: He is a members in good standing of the Intergalactic Institute of Advanced Learning on the planet Rus;
    Firebird (Bonita Juarez)

Enemies: None identified

Known Relatives: None

Aliases: Prime Theoretician Chlree;
    see comments

Base of Operations: Mobile throughout space via the SHIELD orbiter (see comments);
    apparently regularly visits
the Intergalactic Institute of Advanced Learning on the planet Rus;
    presumably at least formerly the planet Glxx, third from the sun in the Zplst system, Milky Way galaxy

First Appearance Avengers Spotlight I#24/2 (November, 1988)

Powers/Abilities: As a Glx, Chlreee's body is silicon-based, rather than carbon-based, like humanity.

    He survives by eating metal, which he could presumably absorb even in the form of bullets fired into his chest (another Glx, Chleee, was shown to be able to do so).

    Native to an arid environment with a gravity 182% of Earth, and larger than average humans, Chleee most likely had some degree of superhuman strength (likely "enhanced human," lifting over 800 lbs., but less than 2 tons; although, perhaps as an intellectual-type, he didn't exercise as much, and so he may be far stronger than the average human, but not able to lift 800 lbs.).

chlree-glx-shield-face    As the Prime Theoretician of an interstellar advanced educational group, Chlree is presumably both highly intelligent and highly educated, presumably in various fields of science.

    Chlree tends to regard subjects of examination as objects (calling Firebird "it" or "the specimen"); however, he is also willing to help such a subject appreciate his or her true nature and power.

Height: Unrevealed (the average height of the Glx is listed at 8'. In the panels in which he was seen in comparison to Yoof (who is a Yrd, which average at 6'2" tall), he looked to vary between 30-50% tall than Yoof;  Firebird is 5'5," but she was only seen in comparison to Chlree when she was kneeling; I estimate 8'4"...then again, maybe Yoof isn't fully grown...who knows?!)
Weight: Unrevealed (I think given the size of his head, if he were 6' tall, he'd be like 200 lbs.; so, at 84"' that would make him about 536 lbs.; ....but, his race is silicon-based rather than carbon-based; per OHotMU engineering expert Mike Fichera, that would increase his weight by 24.1%, so more like 665 lbs.)
Eyes: Pale yellow (no visible irides)
Hair: None (the Glx have some grid pattern on the top of their heads, but no obvious hair)
Skin: Pale yellow
Unusual Features: As a Glx, Chlree has a broad head with a flattened top, with a grid pattern at its top; he has three fingers and a thumb on each handchlree-glx-shield-head-grid

History:

(Avengers Spotlight I#24/2 (fb) - BTS) - Chlree became Prime Theoretician of SHIELD (Society of Higher Interstellar Education and Logistical Development), obviously dedicated to advanced study and research of the universe (and possibly beyond). He was also in good standing with the Intergalactic Institute of Advanced Learning on the planet Rus.

(Avengers Spotlight I#24/2 (fb) - BTS) - After learning that SHIELD base-level pupil Yoof had expunged the experimental by-product of an independent project that had proved untenable into space, Chlree had it tracked to Earth, and he sent the SHIELD orbiter to Earth to evaluate the effects on the being exposed to it, Firebird (Juanita Suarez).

(Avengers Spotlight I#24/2 (fb) - BTS) - SHIELD collected Firebird and brought her to the SHIELD orbiter for study.

chlree-glx-shield-face-close.jpg(Avengers Spotlight I#24/2) - Supervising the evaluation of Firebird, Chlree was impressed that while all sensors indicated that "the specimen" was in abundance of physical discomfort that she refused to cry out in protest. When she finally asked why they were doing this to her, Chlree was intrigued with her coherent response, and he suggested that while they were learning what "it" was made of, they should learn what "it" was made from.

    As Hji began to show Firebird's history, Chlree had him move backward and then forward until reaching "the specimen's first contact with our -- how do I say this -- our -- handywork."

    Chlree then asked Yoof to confirm that the "meteor of cold fire" that mutated Firebird was what he had dumped, and when he did, Chlree asked Yoof if he was aware of the difficulties his actions had precipitated, and he further asked Yoof what he suggested they do with the fruits of his labor.

    However, Firebird then broke free and confronted her examiners, demanding explanations. Ordering the translator to activated (both Anglo-Saxon and Latin derivations), Chlree then explained that they were trying to assess whether she -- or her fellow sentients -- had suffered any difficulties due to the negligence of their base pupil and his unsupervised experiments.

    After Chlree identified his organization's nature and summarized events that had led to her powers, Firebird lashed out with her fiery powers, in denial as she had believed her powers to be a gift from God. Standing his ground, Chlree further detailed the events that had led to her empowerment. As Firebird released Yoof, Chlree was fascinated with her control of molecular expansion through heat, allowing her to create a contained cushion of hot air.

    When Firebird despaired at the seeming contradiction to her faith/beliefs and considered that she was "nothing,"  Chlree assured her she was far more than "nothing," and asked if she would like to know what.

(Avengers Spotlight I#24/2 (fb) - BTS) - Chlree explained to Firebird the true nature and extent of her powers, and this understanding helped Firebird regain her faith, considering that God had granted her abilities through a more circuitous route.

Comments: Created by Fabian Nicieza, Gavin Curtis, and Steve Buccellato.

    When first referenced, he is identified as Prime Theoretician "Chlree" (by the telepathic R'Malki Cmar Har) and one other time with that same spelling by the history-reviewing unidentified race extraterrestrial Hji. The other two times he is identified by name in the story, it is "Chlreee" (once by the base-level pupil Yoof, but once by Cmar Har). That's a tough call,but with the same number of instances, I'd go with the precedent.
    Or perhaps there is a reason for the extra "e" or lack thereof in some circumstances...

    Chlree had a sub-profile in the SHIELD profile first posted 06/07/2004.
