History:
(Spaceman#1/4 (fb) - BTS) - James Fowler Carter was born in 1953.

(Spaceman#1/4 (fb) - BTS) - A group of convicts from the star Algol were banished to Venus, which was believed to be uninhabited. Upon their arrival they discovered the planet was in fact populated by a race of eight-foot tall women. Despite being only a foot tall themselves, as well as outnumbered, the convicts easily overpowered the unarmed Venusians with their para-rays and enslaved them.

(Spaceman#1/4 (fb) - BTS) - Because the convicts required water to survive and Venus' surface was barren they forced the Venusians to dig for what little water could be found underground, a task for which the convicts were too small and weak.

(Spaceman#1/4 (fb) - BTS) - Humans had long dreamt of setting foot on another planet. On June 7, 2004 their chance finally arrived, as Venus passed close enough to Earth to allow for a manned mission. Jim Carter, his partner Rocky, and several other crew members set off on this historic voyage. Jim suspected the planet might harbor some form of life.

(Spaceman#1/4) - Upon landing, Jim's suspicions were confirmed as he and his crew were attacked by the convicts, whom they assumed were the planet's natives. Luckily the convicts' spears were too small to harm the Earthlings. Undeterred, the convicts next blasted them with one of their para-ray cannons. But it too had no effect, and Jim destroyed the cannon with his atom stinger before it could fire a second shot. The convicts finally gave up their attack.

Using his wrist translator, Jim explained that he and his men had come in peace. The convicts revealed that they were not indigenous to the planet and proceeded to show the Earthlings the mines where hundreds of captive Venusians toiled. Enraged, Jim and his men destroyed all the para-ray cannons, ending the Venusians' enslavement. The convicts feared the Venusians would now grow hostile, but Jim correctly deduced that they were a peaceful race.

The next day, after the effects of the para-rays had worn off, Jim brokered a truce between the two races, who agreed to coexist peacefully and share responsibility for their mutual survival.

Jim and his crew remained on Venus for several months before returning home. The grateful Venusians assured the departing Earthlings that all future space travelers would be welcome on Venus.

(Spaceman#1/4 - BTS) - Jim's successful mission opened the door to further interplanetary travel and to the eventual establishment of the United Planets Peace Organization, of which Earth and Venus were both members.

Jim Carter died in 2024. Decades later his great-grandson "Speed" Carter would become one of the most famous members of the Space Sentinels, the United Planets' police force.

This was the first in a series of "Famous Explorers of Space" stories depicting first contacts with various planets and races of Reality-5391's Solar System. One of these appeared in each issue of Spaceman. Some, such as this one, also include real-life facts about the astronomical body featured in the story.

Jim Carter's birth year was the same year that the issue was published.
