strabo-argossean-coti-gutpunch.jpgHistory:

(Marvel Graphic Novel: Conan of the Isles (fb) - BTS) - Strabo apparently frequented the Cup and Trident Inn where he was known as a champion to some and a bully to others.

(Marvel Graphic Novel: Conan of the Isles) - Stabo was present at the seaside inn the Cup and Trident when he saw an older man (Conan) enter and sit down by the fire where a calf was roasting.

    One of Strabo's associates mocked the older man as a Zingaran buccaneer (the rivals of the Barrachan pirates), but Strabo argued that the man was a bit too long in the tooth (a phrase meaning old) to be a buccaneer, and the "old dog" was hogging the best seat in the place.

    Strabo approached the older man, telling him, "Hey Graybeard! Drag your old bones to the back and let honest Argosseans soak up some heat."

    When the older man did not respond, Strabo kicked him in the ankle, asking if he had heard him. Without saying a word, Conan suddenly sprung at Strabo, tackling him and smashing him into a pillar with force that shook the inn's wooden walls.

    Shocked that an old dotard would take him on, Strabo invoked Mitra's pristine privates as he charged at his challenger, but Conan stepped forward to meet him, punching him in the gut and then smashing him in the face.

    Strabo dropped to the ground, and as he weakly moaned, his allies approached him; one was shocked at Strabo's defeat while another noted that Strabo's bullying days were over.

(Marvel Graphic Novel: Conan of the Isles - BTS) - Strabo's comrades carried him to another room for revival.

    Meanwhile, Conan's battle prowess swiftly confirmed his identity to his old ally, Sigurd of Vanaheim.

Comments: Created by L. Sprague DeCamp & Lin Carter;
    adapted by Roy Thomas, John Buscema, Danny Bulandi, Ricardo Villamonte & Armando Gil.

    The name Strabo is historically Roman: "Strabo" ("squinter") was a term given by the Romans to anyone whose eyes were distorted or crooked or affected by strabismus."
---Dim I Nticoudis

    Long in the tooth refers to old age, as teeth condition, size, etc. are commonly used to age animals. Some animals have teeth that continuously grow, or develop gingival recession with age, making their teeth look longer.

    It's perhaps simplistic, but I typically consider Argos to the Hyborian equivalent of Greece.

    Messantia was a notable seaport
