History:

(Uncanny X-Men I#160 (fb) - BTS / Magik I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Earth-8280's Kitty Pryde was a member of her reality's X-Men. At an unrevealed point in time, the team went to limbo to rescue Colossus' sister Illyana who was lured there by the realm's demonic ruler Belasco. Kitty and the X-Men had successfully rescued Illyana, returning her to Earth-8280, however Kitty and the X-Men remained trapped in limbo. Unable to escape, they were condemned to decades of fighting for their lives in the hostile dimension. In the end, Kitty witnessed both Colossus and Wolverine slaughtered at the hands of S'ym, while Belasco claimed Nightcrawler's soul, turning him into a truly demonic underling. Even Storm for a time followed Belasco's tutelage.

(Magik I#1 (fb) - BTS) - At an unrevealed point in time Belasco got his hands on Kitty and used his magic to change her appearance to resemble that of a cat. Kitty received razor sharp teeth and claws and feline-like eyes. As a result Kitty chose to call herself Cat.

(Magik I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Unhappy with this unwanted corruption Kitty stalked Belasco and attacked him on several accounts, only to have him disappear on her.

(Uncanny X-Men I#160 - BTS) - Some time later, Earth-616's X-Men experienced a similar event, only this time the X-Men returned home while Illyana was stuck in limbo.

(Magik I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Cat had witnessed Earth-616's X-Men's ordeal in limbo, but felt powerless to act because watching younger versions of her friends and herself brought back too many memories. Crippled with anxiety, she chose to keep to herself.

(Magik I#1) - From the shadows, Cat witnessed how Belasco manifested the first of five bloodstones from Illyana Rasputin. But when Belasco aimed to kill Storm who tried to save the girl, Cat chose to reveal her presence and scarred Belasco's face with one of her shuriken. Right after the initial attack Cat also successfully evaded one of his powerful blasts after which Belasco chose to flee the scene, leaving Illyana behind. After Storm took a hold of Illyana she teleported both of them and Cat to her sanctum before Belasco could return with re-enforcements. Part of Cat hated Illyana, feeling it was the girl's fault they had become what they are. While Storm and Cat talked about what they should do with young Illyana, Storm decided to take the girl as her pupil which didn't sit well with Cat who figured that this was exactly what Belasco wanted. After all: the more Illyana learned, the more valuable she would become to him. When asked what alternative they had, Cat threw her knife towards Storm. After stating she would rather see Illyana dead than have Belasco claim another soul, she took off.

(Magik I#1) - A year later Cat was sure she'd found a way for Illyana to return home. In the middle of the night she infiltrated Storm's sanctum. After rendering her former friend unconscious, she woke Illyana to tell her of her discovery. Even though Cat told Illyana the road home would be full of risk and peril, she accepted unaware Belasco was watching them from his lair.

(Magik I#2) - Traveling through limbo, Cat and Illyana encountered a dangerous demon. But while battling Illyana accidentally fell through a teleportation portal and was found by Belasco's servant S'ym. However before the purple demon could grab the child, Cat showed up and drove her sword through the demon's tail. She then quickly decreased her density to avoid S'ym's counter attack, grabbing Illyana and entering another teleportation circle to get to safety. Now finding themselves in a plane as vast and barren as the Siberian Tundra Cat saw a great opportunity for dinner. Dropping Illyana in a haystack she attacked a giant, two headed sabretooth tiger. Skilled in the ways of the hunt, Cat mounted the animal and easily stabbed it to death, unleashing a triumphant roar. That night Cat served the tiger's meat, cooking a steak for Illyana while she ate the flesh raw. After dinner, Cat announced Illyana's training would start in the morning. For untold months, possibly years Cat used the harsh environment to toughen up young Illyana, making sure she slowly grew from a defenseless girl to a confident, resourceful young woman. Cat felt this was necessary to prepare Illyana fo the inevitable confrontation against Belasco. She ignored Storm's astral form, who begged Cat to return Illyana to her sanctum only to decide to leave her to her destiny when she continued to refuse. She bid her farewell and said they would never meet again. Cat would indeed never speak of Storm again and continued Illyana's rigorous training. Sometime later the two arrived at Belasco's citadel but after entering the throne room, they found Cat's former teammate Nightcrawler had spotted them. Now Belasco's twisted servant, Nightcrawler attempted to run off and tell his master. Illyana tried to kill him by throwing her knife at him, but he dodged the attack by teleporting out of the way. He then decided to deal with them himself, picking up three swords from a nearby wall and charging the heroines (holding two in his hands, one in his tail). Leaving Illyana to fend for herself for a while, Cat phased out of sight only to reappear right next to Nightcrawler. Quickly grabbing his left leg, she yanked his phased limb into the stone floor before letting go, causing Kurt's leg to materialize within solid matter, shattering the extremity beyond repair. In pain and shrieking, Kurt couldn't defend himself against Cat who picked up one of his swords and stabbed him through the chest. With their former friend dead, Cat and Illyana headed for Belasco's altar where the dimensional barriers separating limbo from Earth were at their thinnest. Cat then used her abilities to phase out of limbo but just when they thought they'd found the X-Men of Earth-616, they realized all this was a trick played on them by Belasco in order to lure them to him. Cat immediately reached for her sword and tried to attack Belasco but was stopped midway when he put her under his spell. Mercilessly mocking Cat, Belasco decided that he'd allowed her too much humanity when she first turned into a feline. Getting rid of her free will, Belasco used his magical abilities to turn her into an actual feline creature. Cat lost all of her humanity and started to purr like a kitten. With no one left to oppose him, Belasco successfully influenced Illyana into creating a second bloodstone.

(New Mutants IV#25 - BTS) - For unrevealed reasons Cat was returned to her human form but remained under Belasco's influence.

(New Mutants IV#25 (fb)) - Cat sought out the young Illyana in Belasco's library to inform her the master needed her.

(New Mutants IV#25 - BTS) - While under Belasco's tutelage she was reminded how her friends Storm, Nightcrawler and Kitty Pryde had become twisted and changed under Belasco's magic.

(New Mutants IV#26 (fb)) - As the young Illyana grew under Belasco's tutelage, she was determined to free Cat from Belasco's influence. As such she tricked Cat into chasing her into the depths of Belasco's castle where Cat was trapped in a magical doorway. Unable to break free, the infuriated Cat was left to watch as Illyana performed a spell which successfully reverted her back to her normal human self. Regaining her true senses, Kitty began to cry wondering what had happened to her. However, just as Illyana reached out to her friend the spell faded causing Kitty to revert back to her Cat-persona. Distraught, Cat quickly fled away while Illyana vowed she would do everything in her power to save her friend.

(Magik I#3 (fb) - BTS) - In the two years that followed Illyana would train under Belasco, with Cat roaming his castle as a pet, not even uttering a single word./font>

(Magik I#3) - During one of Illyana's lessons, she turned her little pet Squidge into a feral demon. When the maddened creature turned on her and tried to attack, Cat showed her presence by striking from the shadows and eating the demon. The tiny morsel only whetted her appetite and Cat decided Illyana would be her next meal. Scared of what her friend had become Illyana fled and hoped to escape Cat by locking herself in her bedroom. However, even as a cat creature she was able to phase through matter. Face to face again, Cat tried to speak Illyana's name and as the girl looked into her eyes she could see a shadow of the woman she was. Unable to bear it Illyana threw her pillow at Cat and ordered the creature to leave her alone, she even unleashed a magical blast that hit Cat. Shocked by this, Cat fled. Sometime later Storm reappeared in her astral form before Illyana and the two decided to stop Belasco. In the events that followed Storm fought Belasco but was attacked from behind by Cat, who used her razor-sharp claws to mortally wound her. In an effort to save Storm Illyana attacked Cat herself, during their fight Illyana tried to appeal to her human side but after realizing Belasco's hold was too strong Illyana used all the skills Cat had taught her to gain the upper hand and snap her neck.

(Magik I#4) - Belasco used his magics to reanimate the corpse of Cat and the other fallen X-Men of Earth-8280 to chase the teenage Illyana Rasputin back to her home in Russia. After they captured her, Belasco returned to limbo with Illyana. As soon as he left, the enchantments keeping the X-Men around vanished, allowing the ghouls to crumble to dust.

Comments: Created by Chris Claremont, John Buscema and Tom Palmer.

It's interesting to note that by early 1984, when Cat made her final appearance, "our" Kitty Pryde hadn't yet adopted the codename Shadowcat. That would follow about six months down the line with the launch of November 1984's Kitty Pryde and Wolverine limited series in which Kitty traveled to a strange, foreign land (Japan) where she fell under the influence of a charismatic man-turned demon (Ogun) who trained her in the martial arts and used her to attack her friends and family. In a way, it more than mirrors the road of her Earth-8280 counterpart. But Chris Claremont was clearly testing some ideas and potential storylines with these alternate reality X-Men stuck in limbo. After all, this also led to the ultimately botched storyline that would have established Storm as the descendent of a powerful line of witches.
