INTERDIMENSIONAL
SCANNER
Classification: Terrestrial device
Creator: Iron Man (Tony
Stark)
User/Possessors: Iron Man (Tony
Stark)
First
Appearance: Avengers I#86
(March, 1971)
Powers/Abilities/Functions: The
Interdimensional Scanner was
designed to scan the multiverse for myriad alternate realities and
project them
onto a video screen, allowing the device’s user to observe other
realities.
History:
(Avengers
I#86) –
Attempting to locate
their missing teammates, Iron Man activated the Interdimensional
Scanner and
began searching alternate realities that Goliath, Quicksilver, Scarlet
Witch
and Vision could be on. Eventually locating their teammates on the
alternate
Earth-712, Iron Man had Thor conjure up a dimensional portal to
Earth-712 and
the missing Avengers were whisked away from Earth-712 back to
Earth-616. Upon
their return to their native world, the missing Avengers decided to
join their
teammates for coffee, leaving Vision behind to ponder whether they had
truly
arrived on Earth-616 or some other alternate reality that was identical
to
their own.
Comments: Created by Roy
Thomas, Sal Buscema and
Jim Mooney.
The
Interdimensional Scanner was
not identified by name until the Official Marvel Index to the Avengers
I#4
(December, 1987). Given its size, it is probably behind the scenes in
every
appearance of Avengers Mansion from Avengers I#86 until the Mansion’s
later
destruction. Then again, it’s just as possible that Iron Man could have
dismantled it at some point and put something else in its location
within
Avengers Mansion ... the world may never know.
