Reed carrying Detector

TRANSISTORIZED DETECTOR

Classification: Terrestrial technology

Creator: Mr. Fantastic (Reed Richards)

User/Possessors: Mr. Fantastic

First Appearance: Fantastic Four I#31 (October, 1964)

Powers/Abilities/Functions: Consisting of a long hand-held probe used in conjunction with a helmet equipped with a built-in computer, the Transistorized Detector was able to pinpoint the exact subterranean position of the Invisible Girl through thousands of leagues of rock and topsoil; its maximum range is unknown. Used much like a metal detector, the probe glowed when it was swept over the precise spot on the surface over which the Invisible Girl was held captive.

History:

(Fantastic Four I#31) - Following the Mole Man's sinking of two New York City blocks--and his consequential abduction of the Invisible Girl--to his subterranean realm, Reed Richards began to organize a rescue effort. Using transistor devices from Stark Industries (delivered by Iron Man (Tony Stark)), Reed assembled the component parts into a highly-sensitive Transistorized Detector and used it to locate where Sue Storm was imprisoned.

Comments: Created by Stan Lee (writer) and Jack Kirby (art).

And after Reed determined Sue's location, the Human Torch (Johnny Storm) used his near-nova heat to blast a tunnel down through the earth; Reed and the Thing followed the flaming youth on the Hover-Cycle.

I'd speculate that Reed probably programmed the helmet's computer with the data he once collected on Sue's unique energy (while using the Nuclear Measuring Device) and attuned the Transistorized Detector to it.

This Detector is very much like an advanced metal detector.

And a BIG Thank You to Grendel Prime for the scans!
