History:

(Nightstalkers#16 (fb) - BTS) - When he was a freshman in high school a guy named Butch Gorgon tried to beat up Gary, but Hannibal King, who was also a student at the high school, saved him. Afterwards Gary acted like Hannibal saved Butch from a beating.

(Nightstalkers#16) - Years later Gary saw Hannibal at the bar at one of Boston's most exclusive hotels. Around that time Hannibal felt miserable because he had lost everything. He was drunk and couldn't remember who Gary was when Gary asked him if he was Hannibal King. Gary then told King how he had saved Gary from a beating in high school.

Comments: Created by Frank Lovece (writer), Bill Wylie (pencils), Frank Turner (inks).

I'm not sure, but it is possible that Gary played piano in the background before he talked to Hannibal. The piano player was only seen in shadows, but he left the piano shortly before Gary appeared behind Hannibal.

Hannibal King has been somewhat ret-conned to have been vamped while working as a private detective decades ago, which would have been years after high school. Hertz should have been noticeably older than King.
