He hired Mr. Darius, an arsonist, to burn down the buildings so that he could collect the insurance and build the new buildings he wanted.

(Daredevil Annual I#7/2) - Furman and Janelle watched another building burn gladly, and Furman paid off Detective Hobbes to keep secrets. Darius was captured by Crippler, who tortured him until he admitted to his past actions. Darius told him what he knew, told him about local heroes, and was then tied up. Crippler roasted Darius on a spit over a fire until Daredevil (Matt Murdock) arrived to save him. As Daredevil fought Crippler, Darius begged to be taken to jail where he'd feel safer. Daredevil soon obliged, leaving Crippler behind. Meanwhile, Furman was arrested after he was attacked by Sathan, who killed Furman's chauffer, Thomas.
