History:
(Gambit IV#7 (fb) - BTS) - Tiring of wearing hand-me-down clothes and catching dinner in a net (and being ordered and slapped around by his aunt and guardian, Antoinelle...and being treated like swamp trash), Emery decided to use his mutant powers to make it big. He started by robbing a liquor store, followed by a few 7-11s, gaining confidence with each theft.

(Gambit IV#7) - Antoinelle walked in on Emery while he was still in costume and hiding a recently stolen stash of money. She slapped him and condemned his behavior, but he refused to listen to her, grabbed a bag, and moved out.
Shortly thereafter, Emery robbed the Louisana Unified Saving bank. A guard fired on his force field futilely, after which he blasted the man unconscious. Gambit then showed up alongside New Orleans Police Department's Detective Noreen Tanaka. Gambit's powers proved useless against Emery's field, and he dodged a series of blasts, but after a civilian was nearly harmed, they both paused, and Emery allowed the girl to move away. Arguing that they were at a stalemate -- since Gambit seemed quick enough to dodge his attacks -- Gambit told Emery he was only on a path to trouble. Judging him to be a good soul, Gambit convinced Emery to power down and offered to take him to the Xavier Institute where he could be accepted and learn to use his powers. Just after Emery agreed, however, Det. Tanaka shot Emery in the back, killing him. She then pretended that she thought he was about to attack.

(Gambit IV#9 (fb) - BTS) - Antoinelle freaked out upon seeing Emery's dead body in the morgue, and she made a number of threats.

(Gambit IV#7) - Not long after, Antoinelle reanimated Emery and the rest of New Orleans' corpses as zombies, intending to gain vengeance for Emery's death.

(Gambit IV#8) - Gambit joined Brother Voodoo in protecting the civilians from the zombies. The pair made short work of many of the zombies, but then Emery confronted them.

(Gambit IV#9) - Unable to penetrate Emery's force field, Gambit and Brother Voodoo fled, then collapsed a building on him to delay him. When Brother Voodoo recommended they take out whoever was controlling Emery, Det. Tanaka recommended they check out Antoinelle Arcenaux and gave them her address.
Traveling by speedboat, Gambit and Brother Voodoo arrived at the Arcenaux shack, and Gambit tried to reason with Antoinelle, but she ordered Emery and the other zombies to kill him. Emery punched Gambit and started to strangle him, but Gambit -- rather than kill Antoinelle (as she may have wished) to stop the zombies -- threw a charged card that knocked the gun from the hands of Det. Tanaka, who had followed and intended to shoot Antoinelle in the back. Gambit then convinced Antoinelle that he hadn't killed Emery, and she released control of the zombies, whom Brother Voodoo then guided back to their coffins.
They left Antoinelle holding Emery's body.
