History: (Journey into Mystery I#56/1 (fb) - BTS) - At some point in the past, a giant alien creature was stranded on Earth. To bide its time until it was rescued by its kind, it encased itself in ice (suspended animation) and engraved the word "ZOG" on the ice, apparently its "S-O-S" term.
(Journey into Mystery I#56/1) - After a bomber plane
spotted the giant floating iceblock in the North Atlantic, a group of
scientists (including Burton) were called in. The governments and
populaces of the world became alarmed about the creature (dubbed Zog
after the word in the iceberg), and many people went into panic mode.
Burton, who saw the world going insane over what may be a needless
possibility, decided to take matters into his own hands. He
commandeered a plane and bombed the iceberg, releasing Zog. Burton was
arrested, convicted and sentenced to execution for a crime against
humanity, but before the execution could be carried out, he was called
in to witness what the creature was doing. Instead of attacking
civilization as many thought it would, Zog simply encased himself in
another iceberg. Burton deduced that the word ZOG meant S-O-S, and he
was pardoned.
Comments: Created by Stan Lee (or Larry Lieber) and Don Heck.
Zog could be
retconned into being one of the Frost Giants of Jotunheim.

Clarifications:
Zog has no known connections to
A scientist who theorized that Zog might not be
malevolent. He freed the creature and was almost executed for his
actions. After Zog returned to his icy haven instead of destroying
humanity, Burton was given numerous awards, honors and apologies.
