History: (X-Factor Annual#1) - After the underground mutant cell led by Blind Faith captured Robert Drake of X-Factor, they had him tied up so that they could interrogate him. When Drake came to, he revealed himself to be Iceman, a fellow mutant, and he joined the cell in invading a facility where Doppelganger was performing horrific experiments upon mutants. Using his powers to pinpoint the weakest point in the facility's structure, Mentac helped the cell members and X-Factor rescue the mutant prisoners, and bring them to safety.

(Soviet Super-Soldiers#1) - After they had been joined by the heroes Ursa Major, Darkstar, and Vanguard, the cell was attacked by the cybernetic warrior Firefox. Mentac was hit by gunfire, and was unable to escape. Firefox asked him to predict the odds of himself and Concussion surviving. Mentac identified a 100% chance against their living. Firefox replied that Mentac was "half right," and shot Mentac in the head. He went on to blow off Concussion's hands, leaving him alive for interrogation.
