History: (Gunhawks#5 (fb) - BTS) - When Graves was a child, his family was killed by an indian raiding party. He was raised by a black family afterwards. As he grew older, he turned to the cavalry in the hopes that they would eliminate the indians, but he determined that they were too weak. Teaching himself to be a minister, he became a gun runner to the Cheyenne, intending to pit the indians and cavalry against each other so that they would both be destroyed, blaming both sides for his family's death.

(Gunhawks#5) - When Graves brought the Cheyenne Grey Fox his latest supply of rifles, he found Reno Jones in Grey Fox's custody, and asked Grey Fox to give him Jones to help build a new church. Grey Fox agreed, and Graves gave them their rifles. As he rode away in his wagon with Reno, he ran into the U.S. Cavalry led by Captain Warren Worth, and told them that Grey Fox and his men were unarmed so that they would wipe each other out. Reno finally got the better of Graves, and knocked him out, then stole a horse to warn the camp.

Graves finally caught up to Reno after he had freed his comrade Kid Cassidy, and Graves shot at Reno, but Cassidy fired back and killed Graves. As Graves died, he told Reno how his identity as a minister was a sham, and that he had hoped Reno could have helped him and been his friend, but that it was too late for him to change. Reno buried Graves not far from the camp.

Comments: Created by Gary Friedrich, Syd Shores and Jack Abel.

The American Civil War ended in 1865, and Gunhawks#1 opened one year later, so the events of the Gunhawks series would be set in 1866-1867.
