"EARTH-200513" (EARTH-THE FANTASTIC FOUR HAD MADE IT TO THE MOON)

Type: Divergent Earth

Environment: Earth-like

Usual means of access: Presumably vibrational attunement

Dominant Life Form: Aliens, humans

Significant Inhabitants: Ben Grimm, Reed Richards, Johnny Storm, Sue Storm

Significant Locations: The Earth, The Moon

First Appearance: Wha...Huh? (2005)

History: (Wha...Huh?/5) - After stealing an experimental rocket in an attempt to make it to the moon, Ben Grimm, Reed Richards, Johnny Storm, and Sue Storm travelled through a cosmic ray storm. Upon arriving on the moon, Sue Storm began turning invisible, while Reed's body became elastic as he attempted to buy a glass of Space Lemon-Aid from an alien. Noticing a bargain books stand nearby, Reed grabbed a book on Space Laws and Fun Facts that told him that the cosmic rays they had encountered had somehow given them each superhuman powers. When Reed began to comment on how the book proved Hasline's Theory of Cosmic-Atomic-Kirbitude, Ben Grimm, who had become a rock-like monster, yanked a moon tree from the ground and tried to hit Reed. While the two fought one another, Johnny mentioned that he felt he was changing as well, but nothing appeared to happen. Johnny explained that he felt that he was about to catch on fire and asked Reed why he did not burst into flames. Reed reminded Johnny that it was simple science: there was no oxygen on the moon and therefore, flame could not exist without oxygen. At that point, Reed realized what he was saying and the entire foursome perished on the moon without air.

Comments:Created by Ed Brubaker and Jim Mahfood.

This Earth diverged from the events seen in Fantastic Four I#1 (November, 1961).

On Earth-616, it was long ago revised that they were trying out a hyperspace warp/interstellar ship. See the origin recap in the 1992 Citizen Kang annual for example.

Clarifications:

Earth-The Fantastic Four Had Made it to the Moon had no known connection to:

  • any other divergent or alternate Earth

BEN GRIMM

Ben Grimm was the pilot of the stolen rocket that brought himself, Reed Richards, Sue Storm, and Johnny Storm through a cosmic storm and to the moon. Once the group made it to the moon, Ben began to change into a rock-like monster. Blaming his transformation on Reed Richards, Ben attacked him only to die seconds later from a lack of oxygen on the moon.

Ben had the same superhuman strength, durability, and rock-like hide as his Earth-616 counterpart.

REED RICHARDS

When Reed Richards stole a rocket in an attempt to make it to the moon, he and his three passengers were bombarded with cosmic radiation before making it to the moon. Once landed, the foursome discovered they had gained superpowers, in Reed's case, the ability to stretch his body as if it were elastic. Reed soon deduced that the transformations were caused by the radiation they had encountered by reading Space Laws and Fun Facts, a book he found at a local moon newsstand. Soon after, Ben Grimm attacked Reed for not realizing the danger of the radiation as Johnny began to smoke and fizzle out. When Johnny asked Reed why he did not burst into flames, Reed explained that fire needed oxygen. Realizing that there was oxygen on the moon, Reed soon died with his teammates, as there was no air on the moon.

JOHNNY STORM

Johnny Storm accompanied Reed Richards and Ben Grimm to the moon, where everyone began to exhibit superhuman powers due to their exposure to cosmic radiation along the way. Johnny soon began to smoke and felt as though he was going to catch on fire. When he fizzled out, he asked Reed why he did not burst into flame, Reed explained that fire needed oxygen to exist. Moments later, Johnny and the others died, realizing that there was no oxygen on the moon.

SUE STORM

When Sue joined Ben Grimm, Reed Richards, and her younger brother, Johnny, to the moon, she found that she had gained the ability to turn invisible due to exposure to cosmic radiation. Before she could really react to her transformation, she died with her other teammates, as there was no oxygen to breathe on the moon.
