History: (What If? II#46 (fb)) - When Charles Xavier was captured by alien Skrulls, he managed to escape and make his way back to Earth, where he found his team of X-Men in disarray, as Havok had been brainwashed and both Colossus and Dazzler were amnesiacs. He also discovered that a psychic intruder was affecting the minds of those on Muir Island and that a small army of mutants known as the Mutant Liberation Front was roaming around unchecked. Xavier then used his telepathy to repair the minds of Havok, Colossus, and Dazzler and called a meeting of the X-Men, X-Factor, and the New Mutants. During the meeting, Xavier mentioned that his X-Men had fallen and were in ruin. Taking Xavier's words as insult, Cable verbally attacked back, explaining that it was time that mutants stopped acting like humanity's pets and stood up for themselves. Xavier replied that he considered Cable as big a menace as Magneto ever was and that every time Cable went into action, it set mutant/human relations back decades. He then revoked Cable's stewardship of the New Mutants. The New Mutants protested, but Xavier ordered that if Cable would not surrender his leadership of the New Mutants, than the X-Men should take the leadership by force. A fight quickly broke out between the X-Men and the New Mutants, one which ended in the New Mutants escaping into the Morlock tunnels with Cable bringing down the tunnel entrance. Xavier tried to enter Cable's mind as they escaped and explained that if Cable did not surrender, then he would make it a priority to track Cable down and release the New Mutants from his influence. Cable explained that if Xavier wanted a war, then he would get one. As they left, Xavier called Cyclops and Marvel Girl to him so they could plan. At that same time, Cable was explaining to the New Mutants that in the world, there are allies and enemies and if Xavier wanted to be treated as a enemy, then it was fine with him. He then told Cannonball that the first thing to do when facing an enemy that outnumbers you is to sow confusion in their ranks.

(What If? II#46) - During a meeting with Cyclops and Marvel Girl, Professor Xavier discussed ideas to help improve the image of mutants. As they talked, a small disc flew into the restaurant emitting loud sonics preventing Marvel Girl and the Professor from using their telepathy. Cyclops soon noticed a second disc, which came to rest at his feet and exploded, killing all three mutants. During the chaos that ensued, some bystanders noticed Cable leaving the scene.

Following the three funerals, Wolverine claimed that Cable would die for what he did. Storm disagreed, explaining that Cable needed to pay out of justice, not vengeance. Pretty soon, the X-Men and X-Factor split into two teams: one led by Storm seeking a justice and one led by Wolverine seeking vengeance. As Storm protested, Wolverine's team left the Xavier Mansion. In the days that followed, many of the X-Men were attacked by their enemies who saw the deaths of their mentors as an opportunity to gain the upper hand on them. While Storm's team battled the Genoshans, as the Avengers battled Apocalypse, who sought to use the Scarlet Witch as a servant. In Manhatten, the mutant twins Fenris attacked humans while other mutants were attacked in retaliation. Soon after, Zaladane staged an attack on the Savage Land which found controlling the Antarctic jungle and the Fantastic Four battled the Mutant Liberation Front, who had attacked them for their inaction in the cause of mutant freedom. To make matters worse, Freedom Force rounded up the Morlocks and the Externals planned to use the power battle to their advantage. Also taking the opportunity were the Shadow King, who created a virtual army out of his possessed followers and Mister Sinister, who ordered his Nasty Boys to bring him the heads of Roxxon Oil, the P.T.L. Club, and the Boy Scouts of America. Sebastian Shaw also saw this opportunity and mentioned to Tessa that it was about time that he talked with U. S. government about re-starting Project: Wideawake.

As the chaos continued, Sunspot left Cable and was replaced on the team by Cable's ally, Domino, just in time for Wolverine and his crew to arrive and start a battle with them. As Wolverine's crew battled the New Mutants, Wolverine himself made his way to Cable, where to the two battled furiously until Wolverine stabbed Cable in the heart with his claws, killing him. As Cable died, he mumbled that Xavier was worth more than Wolverine's entire team. Wolverine angrily told him to shut up, but Cable replied that Xavier, at least, had the courage of his convictions, but Wolverine had let personal feelings get in the way of the job and the X-Men were suffering because of it. As Wolverine stood over the dead Cable, Storm's team was battling the Mutant Liberation Front with the help of Captain Britain. During the battle, Siryn attacked Wildside in revenge for the recent death of Banshee and Captain Britain commented that he shared her grief, as he lost Meggan at the same time as Siryn lost Banshee. The Mutant Liberation Front quickly teleported away, but before they could relax, Zaladane, the Savage Land Mutates, the Hellfire Club, and Fenris attacked the Xavier Mansion. A huge battle ensued, which cost the X-Men the lives of the Beast and Nightcrawler, as well as the Xavier Mansion itself. Storm's group of X-Men soon retreated, watching the Xavier Mansion explode and catch fire. While Storm personally watched the Mansion go up in flames, she was unaware that she was being watched by Magneto, who exclaimed that the chaos and warfare would have to stop. He monologued that the mutants of the world would be doomed unless a leader emerged.

(What If? II#47 (fb)) - When the Mutant Liberation Front returned to their base following their attack on Storm's team of X-Men, they found Magneto waiting for them and a deceased Stryfe. Magneto ordered the mutants to choose unity with him or certain death.

(What If? II#47 (fb)) - The anti-mutant sentiments soon covered the United States, with angry human mobs attacking any mutants. One attack forced Cannonball and Wolfsbane of the New Mutants into hiding and another attack nearly cost Phoenix her life as an angry mob cornered both her and Shadowcat.

(What If? II#47) - Not long after the destruction of the Xavier Mansion, Magneto created an army of mutants under his command and attacked the White House, taking the U. S. government hostage. The United States' non-mutant heroes stood in the way of Magneto and a giant battle quickly ensued. The battle was soon halted, however, when the heroes discovered Magneto's hostages and were forced to retreat to save the U.S. government officials. Meanwhile, Storm and Colossus mourned the death of Forge following the attack on the Xavier Mansion, as Wolverine and his crew battled Mister Sinister's Nasty Boys, killing them all. Growing tired of all of the vengeance, Psylocke left Wolverine's crew.

After taking over the White House, Magneto explained to the President that he was only doing what they forced him to do and the President whispered to himself that he was as well. The President then hit a small remote control button, opening up the hidden silos across the United States which housed the Sentinels. The Sentinels then proceeded to destroy all mutants and those with mutated genes, first slaughtering most of the Savage Land Mutates and then attacking Franklin Richards, who was defended by the Fantastic Four. The Sentinels turned their attention to those housing mutants such as the New Warriors, who were housing Firestar. The Sentinels then attacked the remnants of Wolverine's group of X-Men, killing both Archangel and Havok. When Iceman was captured, Wolverine was forced to flee into the Morlock tunnels to escape death or captivity himself. Following an attack of Magneto where a group of Sentinels were easily destroyed, the Sentinels massacred a huge quantity of superhuman heroes and villains, and put the rest into internment camps.

As the nightmares continued, Storm met up with Psylocke and explained that the nightmarish future that they had been warned of multiple times had come true. While the duo avoided Sentinel capture, Wolverine found the dying Sebastian Shaw, who gave Wolverine information about Project: Wideawake before passing away. Days later, Storm and Psylocke snuck into Magneto's White House and attempted to warn him of the future, but Magneto confidantly destroyed the Sentinels that were attacking them with a wave of his hand. He explained that he did not need to be warned of anything, as he could easily take out any Sentinels that would ever threaten the mutants housed in the White House. As he attempted to destroy another Sentinel, Psylocke tried to warn him that she had telepathically scanned the Sentinel and that it contained a nuclear warhead. Not hearing Psylocke in time, Magneto destroyed the Sentinel, detonating a nuclear bomb that destroyed himself, Storm, Psylocke, and every mutant contained within the White House including Reaper, Strobe, Kamikaze, and Mesmero. Following the destruction of the White House, the Sentinels eventually overran the world, with any resistance getting crushed almost immediately. Using the information given to him by Sebastian Shaw, Wolverine crept into one of the mutant internment camps and freed Iceman, La Bandera, Sunder, Siryn, and Amphibius. He then gave them costumes and after they suited up, Iceman announced that the X-Men lived again.
