History

(Marvel Two-In-One I#6 (fb) – BTS) – Duff Coogan grew up living a hard life on New York's Yancy Street. He was often nurtured by his grandmother, Mrs. Coogan.

(Marvel Two-In-One I#6) – Duff and his pal, Nick Cromer, were waiting for a subway to come next to Dr. Stephen Strange, Clea, Alvin Denton, and Sheldon and Renee Goldenberg. A mysterious girl was playing the harmonica and Nick and Duff ridiculed her. When she finished playing, Nick accosted her, grabbing her harmonica and stating that he’d play a tune if she wouldn’t. The girl tried to grab the harmonica back and  Nick shoved her, accidentally knocking her on the subway tracks. Dr. Strange retrieved the harmonica and the girl was hit by the subway, sending cascading lights over those assembled, including Nick. Nick and Duff made a run for it, thoroughly scared, not knowing that the girl claimed to be a manifestation of the force of destiny and that he and the others could now alter reality to help them achieve their self-proclaimed destinies.

They returned to Duff’s grandmother’s, Mrs. Coogan’s place on Yancy Street. Mrs. Coogan, hearing of their challenge, called the Thing for aid and he arrived with Dr. Strange just in time to battle a giant rat that Duff and Nick had intentionally created, representing their fear of never leaving the slums. After they released the fear, the heroes were able to defeat the rat, and the destiny force was exhausted.

(Defenders I#20 - BTS) - The harmonica plot was later revealed to be part of Sister Celestia's attempt to resurrect the Undying Ones.
