Baby Elmo eyes up the Human Torch

Real Name: Unknown

Identity/Class: Human

Occupation: Unknown

Group Membership: None

Affiliations: fellow patrons at the Last Exit

Enemies: Human Torch (Johnny Storm)

Known Relatives: None

Base of Operations: Last Exit, bar in Hell's Kitchen, New York, U.S.A.

First Appearance: Daredevil I#261 (December, 1988)

Powers/Abilities: Baby Elmo was a powerful, ginger-haired, oversized, muscle-bound brute. He had a ginger goatee and multiple matching piercings in each ear (a dangling one in each lobe and about five rings on the side). He stood about 7' tall with almost peak human strength. He rarely spoke and uttered monosyllabic grunts and groans. His speed and agility were normal so an astute fighter could dodge his blows. With his exaggerated size and strength, he became overconfident in his abilities. He also drank a lot of hard liquor, which probably dulled his fighting skills. He wore army camouflage-style gear with a matching bandana that ribboned behind him. He had no noticeable tattoos.

He was described by one bar patron thusly: "Baby chews bullets for breakfast, eats napalm for lunch, washes it all down with a gallon of acid rain, then butts heads with his pet bull to work up another appetite…". But this is likely to have been embroidered and not actually true.

Baby Elmo shrugs off the Human Torch's first punchesHistory:

(Daredevil I#261) - Looking for the missing Daredevil (Matt Murdock), the Human Torch (Johnny Storm), Karen Page and Butch came to the bar of ill repute, Last Exit. Johnny Storm had made an overeager attempt to appear tough with a "bad" look and entered the bar while the other two looked with trepidation. He was ridiculed by the bar's patrons when he approached one patron and tried talking tough. He was derided for relying on his powers so much and so he issued the challenge that he could take on the biggest guy in the Bar.

While Baby Elmo approached the Torch, Karen Page and Butch looked on, shocked at how big, nasty and ugly appeared. Baby Elmo initially sized up Johnny Storm before taking a massive swing at him. Johnny ducked then punched Baby ineffectively, but was tossed away. Johnny ran back but was caught in a bear hug. Johnny smacked Baby Elmo's ears; Baby Elmo fell to his knees moaning and was then savagely punched him in the face before landing a knockout blow. Baby Elmo fell back and crushed a table on the way down.

The other patrons then threw bottles, mugs and other small objects at the Human Torch, who then ignited in defense, causing the Last Exit to burn down. A massive figure like Baby Elmo's, with a bandana and trail, ran away from the fire (given there were no other hulking figures in the Bar, it was probably him).

Comments: Created by Ann Nocenti (writer), John Romita Jr. (pencils) & Al Williamson (inks).

He was probably named Baby because he was so big and Elmo because of his ginger hair (see clarifications).

His skills may have been suited to an occupation like bouncer or enforcer.
