BARON ZEMO'S ANDROIDS

Classification: Terrestrial robots

Creator: Heinrich Zemo, Arnim Zola

User/Possessors: Heinrich Zemo

First Appearance: Avengers I#56 (September, 1968)

Powers/Abilities/Functions: The androids could be shrunk down in size and carried inside of a small box; at full height, the androids stood about 12 feet, and possessed superhuman strength and durability comparable to Goliath's. The androids demonstrated no abilities for independent thought or speech.

History: (Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Deluxe Edition#16 - Baron Zemo (fb) - BTS) - During World War II, Arnim Zola and Heinrich Zemo designed a pair of androids which could be reduced in size and carried inside of a box.

(Avengers I#56) - When Zemo was sent to capture an experimental drone plane from a military base in England by the Red Skull, he brought along the androids, and released one of them to aid him in capturing the plane. As Captain America and Bucky arrived to stop Zemo, the android fought back, and knocked out Bucky. This distracted Captain America long enough for the android to strike him from behind.

The android aided Zemo in strapping the two heroes to the drone plane so that they could be turned over to Hitler, but they were interrupted by time-traveling versions of the Black Panther, Captain America, Hawkeye and Goliath. Zemo released the second android to help fight them, but Goliath defeated one of them in battle, and the second was beaten by the teamwork of Captain America and the Black Panther.

Comments: Created by Roy Thomas, John Buscema and George Klein.

The androids presumably access Kosmos with their height-changing powers, which may mean that Zola discovered Pym particles before Pym did!

Given Zola's role in creating them, the androids may have more in common with Zola's "insta-growth" Hulk clones from Avengers Annual#13 than with Pym particle technology.

Couldn't their ability to rapidly alternate in size also have been derived from the Decker Formula (created by the Golden Age Terror foe Decker in Mystic Comics#6)?
