BROTHERHOOD OF HADES

Membership: Kringe, Mr. Hotline

Purpose: Universal mind control; abolishment of free will

Affiliations: None

Enemies: Franklin Fields, Jerry Fields, Olivia Fields, Mr. Machine (Machine Man)

Base of Operations: high-tech facility outside of Central City, California

First Appearance: 2001: A Space Odyssey#9 (August, 1977)

History: (2001: A Space Odyssey#9) - When Mr. Machine first departed the Broadhurst Research Center, he was spied upon by Mr. Hotline, who wondered if he was one of the "X" series of robots. In order to test him, he sent a "hover squad" of three egg-shaped vessels to attack him using sonic-based weapons. Mr. Machine bested the agents easily, convincing Mr. Hotline of the robot's origins.

(2001: A Space Odyssey#10) - Mr. Hotline communed with the Mind Monitor, the super-computer he worshipped, and told it that an "X" model existed. The Mind Monitor told him to bring it to him. Three of the Brotherhood of Hades then confronted Mr. Machine at the home of Judge Franklin Fields. One wore explosives on his chest, and threatened to blow them up unless Mr. Machine turned himself over to the other two men. Mr. Machine complied.

Mr. Machine was forced to let the Brotherhood disassemble him, and they placed his head in front of the Mind Monitor so that it could remove its free will. However, Mr. Machine summoned the rest of his body to him by remote control, and reassembled himself. He then smashed through the image of the Mind Monitor, revealing it as nothing more than a computer. He used its controls to render the agent guarding the Fields' harmless, then destroyed the Brotherhood of Hades' facility. The agent left with the Fields was turned over to the police.

Comments: Created by Jack Kirby and Mike Royer.

Presumably, Mr. Hotline learned of the "X" robot program through the Mind Monitor, since it wasn't public knowledge at the time.

Although Machine Man believed he would someday meet the creator of the Mind Monitor, he never did. Unless...perhaps it was X.E.R.O.?

CLARIFICATIONS:
The Brotherhood of Hades should not be confused with:

KRINGE

Kringe was Mr. Hotline's right-hand man, and chauffer, and was a typically-sniveling sidekick. He was apparently killed when Mr. Machine destroyed the Brotherhood of Hades' facility.

--2001: A Space Odyssey#9, 10

MISTER HOTLINE

Mr. Hotline was the leader of the Brotherhood of Hades, and was dedicated to their goals of universal mind control. He was apparently slain when Mr. Machine destroyed the Brotherhood of Hades' facility.

--2001: A Space Odyssey#9, 10

THE MIND MONITOR

The Mind Monitor was an advanced super-computer worshipped by the Brotherhood of Hades, constructed by unknown entities in order to direct the cult's activities. It had the power to control the Brotherhood of Hades' equipment, and to sap free will from the minds of others. It would display a holographic image of itself as "the Devil" in order to appeal to its victims' emotions. It was destroyed by Mr. Machine.
