Powers/Abilities: Avery Zavala had bonded and merged with his reality's Soul Stone (see comments), which granted him vast powers and allowed him to absorb every soul in his universe into himself. He was capable of teleporting across vast distances and traveling between the universes. While normally Infinity Stones only worked in their native universe, as a Stone Bearer Zavala retained his powers outside of it. Fighting other Stone Bearers, he could overpower the less experienced ones but was himself outmatched by the Apeiron. He was able to resist an alteration of reality, partially retaining his memories and powers in the altered universe.
Zavala wielded the Infinity Blade, the only weapon capable of harming members of the Apeiron. The Infinity Blade also functioned as the receptacle for the Infinity Stones, similar to the Infinity Gauntlet, granting Zavala access to their powers as well. With the Mind Stone, he projected foolproof illusions directly into the minds of others and took away their knowledge of how to use their own powers. With the Time Stone, Zavala froze others in time and resisted instant aging unleashed upon him by the Death Stone.
Zavala perceived that the truth of the existence was tied to storytelling and became capable of interacting with the very fabric of the medium itself. He could talk to others though his caption boxes and move both captions and panels as objects in the physical world. With the power of all seven Infinity Stones at his disposal, Zavala used the panel borders to squish his foes and pushed people through those same borders into the white void between panels (nicknamed "Gutter Space" by Gwenpool). He created duplicates of himself, manipulated panel perspective to instantaneously alter his own size, and changed the artstyle itself to his advantage. He also displayed flight, energy projection, superhuman strength and durability as manifestation of his god-like powers and claimed to be beyond death itself.

History: (Infinity Watch#4 (fb) - BTS) - Avery Zavala was the CEO of the biggest conglomerate on the planet. Despite his wealth, he felt disadvantaged and overlooked in favor of the super-powered heroes. To protect his way of life, Zavala invested into research and investigations aimed to paint the superheroes as a threat. Seeking allies, he hijacked an alien communication array and sent a message into the Multiverse. This attracted the Apeiron, Infinity Stone Bearers proficient in fighting and killing other Stone Bearers. Realizing the danger to his world, Avery joined its heroes to oppose the Apeiron in a war that ultimately proved futile. When the Soul Stone Bearer died near him, the Stone picked Zavala as its new host.
(Infinity Watch#2 (fb) - BTS) - At some point Zavala was also allegedly the Bearer of his universe's Mind Stone (see comments).
(Infinity Watch#1 (fb) - BTS) - Zavala and his fellow Stone Bearers constructed the Infinity Blade, the only weapon that could harm the Apeiron. All except Avery were killed and consumed before they could use it.
(Infinity Watch#4 (fb) - BTS) - Deciding that the war was unwinnable, Zavala absorbed every still living soul in the universe into himself and fled from Apeiron into another reality, seeking to recreate his universe elsewhere. Apeiron pursued him across dozens of realities, killing hundreds of Stone Bearers and consuming their Infinity Stones.
(Infinity Watch#1) - The Apeiron finally caught up with Zavala on Earth-616. Star Slayer had just restrained him when Earth-616 Stone Bearers - the Infinity Watch - arrived on the scene. With only three of them present, the Apeiron still easily overpowered the Infinity Watch and began absorbing their power. As they were distracted, Avery struck Star Slayer with the Infinity Blade, delivering a wound and causing the Apeiron to retreat.
(Infinity Watch#2 - BTS) - Zavala was left behind, and when Colleen Wing demanded an explanation, he immediately turned and killed her with the Infinity Blade, claiming her Mind Stone for himself.
(Infinity Watch#1) - Zavala then projected an illusion of a still-alive Colleen into the minds of the others and begged them to help him recreate his universe with their combined powers. The Infinity Watch were wary to do as he asked, and so Avery resorted to his original plan of killing them and using their Infinity Stones to overwrite his universe over Reality-616.
(Infinity Watch#2) - Robbing Overtime of knowledge on how to use the Time Stone, Zavala beheaded him and added the Time Stone to the Infinity Blade. He used it to freeze Star in time and turned his attention to Coulson, whose Death Stone was unfamiliar to him. Coulson attempted to sap the life out of Avery, who used the Time Stone to turn Coulson's power back at him, claiming his Death Stone. Zavala then proceeded to kill Apex, Multitude, and Overtime, claiming each of their Stones. Star was the only one left, and Avery freed her mind before ripping the Reality Stone from her chest and completing the Infinity Blade. With the last seconds of her life, Star reached for the Blade and used it to remake the universe into the likeness of Reality-45869.
(Infinity Watch#3) - In the altered reality, Avery Zavala was a wealthy industrialist incarcerated at the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. Star sought to suppress his memories, but Zavala managed to alter her designs, making villains of the world into his loyal subjects. Doctor Doom, Hydra, and the Wrecking Crew attacked the Alcatraz prison and successfully broke Avery out. Others were dispatched to claim the Infinity Blade from Ripley Ryan in New York, but they failed, and Zavala headed there to do it himself. With his powers returning, Avery perceived that in the altered reality the Infinity Watch were alive and coming together, despite all but Ryan lacking their original memories. Succeeding where others failed, Green Goblin retrieved the Infinity Blade, and its power opened up his reality awareness and enabled Norman to talk to Zavala across distance.
(Infinity Watch#4) - The Apeiron returned and found themselves in the altered reality. Green Goblin tried to fight them with the Infinity Blade but was defeated, and the Apeiron undid Star's alterations to reality. The Infinity Watch woke up alive on Earth-616 but were outmatched by the Apeiron. Zavala teleported himself back into the fight and discarded the Blade, as the Infinity Stones had returned to their Bearers. Talking to Coulson and insisting that they would otherwise lose, Avery convinced the Infinity Watch to share their powers with him directly. Altering his costume and appearance, Zavala wiped the Apeiron from existence through the power of stories which always had endings. The Infinity Watch tried to stop sharing their power with him, but Avery was prepared and held onto it, declaring that he was about to remake his universe.
(Infinity Watch#5) - Zavala fought the Infinity Watch, using his powers to manipulate reality around him. He insisted that their struggle was pointless, as his new reality would be almost exactly the same, the alterations insignificant in sight of the big picture. Observing how Avery manipulated the medium to his advantage, Apex and Multitude started doing the same to him in return, hitting Zavala with balloons and captions and traversing the Gutter Space to escape his attacks. Multitude realized that the power of storytelling that defeated Apeiron could be used against Avery as well and shared his idea with others. The Infinity Watch converged on Zavala, used their powers to restrain him in place and time, and repeated the mantra "And then he woke up." This made Avery wake up in his bed back in his home universe, his recent experiences forgotten as a fleeting dream.
Comments: Created by Derek Landy & Ruairi Coleman.Avery Zavala claimed to have been the Bearer of his universe's Mind Stone in Infinity Watch#2 and the Soul Stone in Infinity Watch#4. Holding all of the souls in his universe would require the latter, but it remains unclear whether his statement about the Mind Stone was an error, an in-universe deception, or if he had in fact at some point wielded both.
Realizing that Avery himself was subject to the rules of storytelling, the Infinity Watch had used the cliche "it was all a dream" way to end his story. This took away Zavala's reality-bending powers and restored his home universe, diverging it from the timeline in which it was attacked by Apeiron into Reality-72564.
Avery Zavala also existed on Earth-45869, but because he had resisted Star's reality alteration, Zavala seen in the altered reality is considered to be main version and not a variant.
