Powers/Abilities: Dr. Zadian was a brilliant scientist, especially in physics. After becoming one with his pacific island, Zadian could manipulate the entire island to his will. This included subtle effects, such as controlling the growth of vegetation in order to generate pathways that would seem to be natural clearnings. He planted chemicals inside the fruit on his island which could inhibit Bruce Banner's transformation into the Hulk by manipulating his heart rate. He could also reshape the island to fashion eyes for him to see through, to create a simulcra of his face and create warriors from silica. He also had influence over wildlife, such as manta rays that he reshaped into servants. His manta rays had octopus-like tentacles and could fly. Zadian's consciousness was held within the caldera of a volcano and his power controlled through a series of relays that resembled stone pillars. Zadian could also emit various forms of energy from the island including a radiation wave that caused the Hulk to become Bruce Banner and he could manipulate existing energies, such as repulsor rays.

History:

(Indestructible Hulk Annual I#1 (fb)) - Dr. Zadian was a lecturer at the Oxford Forward Thought Conference. Among the students to whom he lecured were Bruce Banner and Tony Stark. Zadian believed in making use of whatever nature provided to humankind and opined that fear was necessary in order to obtain funding for advanced scientific projects and cited the example of Nazi scientist Dr. Werner von Braun being employed by NASA because the Cold War made the USA afraid of the USSR. When Tony Stark wondered if Zadian was talking strictly along the lines of military interests in technology Zadian immediately recognized him as Howard Stark's son. When Tony revealed his field of study was defense technology Zadian opined that for him, the sky was the limit. When Bruce Banner asked about what scientists who didn't want to contribute to the arms race could do. Zadian was very dismissive of Banner, calling him a "pacifist" and soon claiming he had forgotten Banner's name but Zadian claimed the hope for scientists was that politicians would never follow through all the way with the inventions they were given.

(Indestructible Hulk Annual I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Through his military contracts, Dr. Zadian was given an island in the Palmyra Atoll where the US Navy had performed bomb tests in the 1950s. Zadian was given a large budget for his experiments and sought to create an environment which could defend itself. As Dr. Zadian had developed Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease he interfaced his own consciousness with the island in order to continue the project and live on. In time the files concerning Zadian's project were lost and the military forgot about Zadian's work.

(Indestructible Hulk Annual I#1) - The island was finally rediscovered by Banner's associate Patricia Wolman, who had been exploring Zadian's work because she also had Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease. Stark and Banner - now Iron Man the Hulk - went to explore the island. As their boat neared the island Zadian sent two mutated manta rays to attack them but the Hulk easily tore them apart. As they arrived on the beach Zadian began shaping a large eye to observe them but Iron Man destroyed the eye with his repulsor ray. Banner and Stark noticed the remains of the destroyed eye had shaped themselves into dozens of tiny eyes.

Zadian then formed a number of large warriors from the beach silica and attacked the two heroes but as Iron Man could tell the island was generating a radiation wave that would cause the Hulk to quickly turn into Banner, Iron Man had the Hulk carry him deeper into the island before he turned back into Banner. The two men camped on the island overnight as they recalled what they knew of Zadian. They also ate fruit from the island, through which Zadian was able to introduce chemicals into Banner's body which would inhibit his ability to become the Hulk again.

The next day Stark and Banner set out for the volcano, having realized it was the source of the energy readings they had noticed. As they neared the volcano Zadian opened up the ground beneath them and brought them to a cavern where he shaped the stone into a simulcra of his head. Zadian explained how he had become a part of the island and when Iron Man tried to fire repulsor rays at him he easily bent the rays around and back at him. He also gloated at how he had removed Banner's ability to become the Hulk but Iron Man quickly overwhelmed Zadian's inhibitors by making Banner so angry that he became the Hulk again. Zadian began summoning creatures from the rocks to fight the two heroes but by doing so he was endangering himself as Iron Man and the Hulk had identified the relays inside the caldera which controlled his powers. As the relays were damaged by the resulting fight, Zadian continued to summon more energy to fight them. With so many relays damaged the power could no longer be contained and Zadian caused an explosion which destroyed the entire island, apparently destroying his consciousness. Iron Man and the Hulk escaped destruction.
