History:
(Rawhide Kid I#1/2 (fb) - BTS) - White-Face was the masked leader of a gang of desperadoes who operated in the area around the town of Last Chance, Texas. They rustled from the local ranchers, and when Last Chance's sheriff tried to arrest them White-Face murdered him. Around two weeks later, with no one yet willing to become the new sheriff, White-Face's gang rustled a rancher's entire stock of horses, and hid them in a secret canyon. 

(Rawhide Kid I#1/2) - Two weeks after he murdered the sheriff White-Face rode with his gang back into Last Chance to be confronted by the newly appointed sheriff, Rawhide Kid, and his young deputy, Randy Clayton. Unaware the sheriff was the notorious gunslinger, the gang treated the pair as something to ridicule, prompting Randy to angrily punch one. In response White-Face pistol-whipped the teenager, then pointed his gun at Rawhide and told him he had thirty seconds to take his deputy and leave town. Unimpressed, Rawhide told the outlaw that he wasn't going to arrest him for assaulting a deputy, because he figured that if he gave White-Face a little more time the criminal would provide Rawhide with a real crime to arrest him for. Outraged at being disobeyed, White-Face announced that he'd give Rawhide a real crime, Rawhide's own murder. White-Face cocked the trigger of his gun, but in the moment it took him to do so Rawhide drew his twin six-shooters and fired, shooting the gun out of White-Face's hand and then spinning to blast the gun belts off of two of White-Face's men, disarming them. Realizing he was outmatched, White-Face rode off while Rawhide was taking down the last remaining gang member, abandoning his men. Leaving Randy to guard the gang members, Rawhide mounted up and began pursuing. Though he had a decent lead and knew the local terrain far better, White-Face realized that his enemy was rapidly catching up, so he headed towards the hidden valley where he had corralled the stolen horses, then triggered a stampede hoping that would finish off Rawhide. However, despite being seemingly trapped by the valley walls, Rawhide managed to get his horse Apache up the slippery side of a rocky hill, out of the stampede's path. Riding among the running horse, White-Face proved less lucky; his saddle cinch broke, causing him to fall beneath the hooves to die a painful death, trampled by the very horses he had rustled.

   We never see White-Face unmasked, nor do we ever see him when he's not riding his horse, so estimating his height is very much a guess. He seems to not be either unusually large nor small, and of around average build. Why he wears a white mask but his men wear no disguises at all isn't revealed. Maybe he just liked the idea of building a mythology around himself, or maybe (presumably unlike his men) he maintained a more respectable public identity. Despite the possible connotations that someone might read into him wearing a white hood, there was no evidence of him being racist; I mean, given he was a violent, murderous criminal and the era, it was definitely possible he was, but he didn't demonstrate any evidence of it during his brief appearance.

   The Rawhide Kid that White-Face encountered was not Johnny Bart, the best known individual to use that name, but instead his predecessor; unfortunately, since we've never learned that Rawhide Kid's real name I can't use it as a clarifier in the profile above, so I have to spell it out here in the comments. Though it was long assumed that the original Rawhide Kid wasn't "real" in Earth-616, there was nothing to support that supposition, and the Bart Rawhide Kid's handbook entries have since confirmed the (616) existence of his namesake.

   This profile was completed on 08/30/2026, but its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25^th anniversary's celebratory event to represent the original Rawhide Kid.
