History:violens-schultz-ernie-vietnam
(
Sachs & Violens#4 (fb) - BTS) - As a young man, Ernie lived around Bourbon Street in New Orleans' French Quarter.

(Sachs & Violens#1 (fb) - BTS) - During the Vietnam War, Ernie Schultz earned the nickname "Violens."

(Sachs & Violens#4 (fb) - BTS) - Ernie Schultz saw horrible things in Vietnam, including dying mothers and sons, and even babies.

(Sachs & Violens#4 (fb) - BTS) - Schultz apparently had a criminal record and a parole officer, who asked him if he was crazy.

(Sachs & Violens#1 (fb) - BTS) - Twenty years later, Ernie Schultz worked as a photographer, specializing in soft core pornography.

(Sachs & Violens#2 (fb) - BTS) - Ernie departed the Comitz Castle angrily when owner George Comitz refused to carry his "highbrow" pictures.

(Sachs & Violens#1 (fb) - BTS) - Ernie regularly photographed Juanita Jean "JJ" Sachs.

(Sachs & Violens#4 (fb) - BTS) - Around New Years, a drunken Ernie told JJ about the stuff that happened in Vietnam when he was a war photographer there, laughing about how "disturbed Vietnam vets" were cliche...and then crying...and then passing out.

(Sachs & Violens#1 (fb) - BTS) - Ernie's agent, Bert, worked to get him to accept an offer to accept an offer from Kraus Publishing to use his Viet Nam footage.

(Sachs & Violens#1) <The April before the main story> - Ernie took pictures at an orgy, in which JJ was involved.

(Sachs & Violens#1) - Showing up late after beating up a would-be mugger, JJ offered multiple excuses, but Ernie was worried about her after learning of the mugging, especially as four models had recently mysteriously disappeared. After she assured him she could take care of herself, he offered to buy her breakfast (and he quietly considered more involved options), but she suggested some other time as she had a date with her sister.

When Bert tried to push Ernie to accept Krauss' offer, showing him one of his pictures from Viet Nam, Ernie angrily shattered the door to his own dark room and throttled Bert, asserting that he wanted to forget what had happened in Nam and accusing of Bert of just trying to make a buck off human misery. By the time Ernie calmed down and apologized, Bert ran out and told him to get a new agent.

(Sachs & Violens#1 (fb) - BTS) - Learning of the death of JJ's friend Wendy Ashe, apparently in a snuff film, Ernie called JJ and left her a message, telling her to call him.violens-schltz-ernie-elbow

(Sachs & Violens#1) - After JJ told Ernie she was going to confront and punish Wendy's killers, Ernie suited up, accepting that he would have to act like he did back in Nam in order to protect her.

(Sachs & Violens#2) - Seeking to track down JJ, Ernie visited his mother at Harmony Love Toys, and she let him know both that JJ had stopped there, and she gave him the name of George Comitz, as someone who was a top dealer for snuff films. Ernie next contacted JJ's nun sister, MacArthur, who told him that JJ had called and noted that the people who had killed her friend Wendy had not deserved to live.

Traveling to the Comitz Castle, Ernie asked about Wendy Ashe; when George attempted to have his muscle man, Ralphie, show Ernie out, Ernie distracted Ralphie with a knife to his gonads and then dropped him with an elbow to the chin. By the time Ralphie had gotten up and pulled a gun, Ernie had a grenade in George's mouth, and he sent Ralphie to get a pen and paper so George could write down anything he had not bothered to tell the police.

(Sachs & Violens#2 - BTS) - JJ forced her way into Sin Gal Magazine, where photographer Maurice recognized her from a picture with her friend, Wendy. She fought her way past several attackers, but was finally knocked out by the Axecutioner, who had slain Wendy.violens-schltz-ernie-grenademouth

(Sachs & Violens#2) - Presumably via information from George Comitz, Ernie entered Sin Gal magazine, where he dropped the child trafficking Josef with the butt of his rifle. '

As the Axecutioner cornered a battered JJ and threatened her with his battleaxe, Ernie arrived, shattering the axe with a bullet and slaying several of the other sex offenders present. When Axecutioner tried to take Ernie out from behind with a pair of razor discs, JJ knocked Ernie out of the way, and when Axecutioner promised them a poetic battle, Ernie shot him dead.

They next confronted Maurice, and Ernie stopped JJ from killing him so she wouldn't have to kill a helpless person...and then he killed Maurice himself.

(Sachs & Violens#2 (fb) - BTS) - Ernie took Katie and Sammy, the kids he had rescued from Josef, with him as he departed the building.

(Sachs & Violens#2) - As Ernie drove JJ away -- insisting she wear her seatbelt to avoid unnecessary risks -- she told him to pull over and let her show him how excited she was; however, having picked up the two kids he had saved from Josef, he told her they should not wake the kids.

(Sachs & Violens#3) - Having camped out in a park, Ernie was worried when he heard JJ yelling, but he found she was exhilarated and was celebrating avenging her friend. Although he initially considered that she was not thinking clearly, as the naked woman -- turned on by the adrenaline rush -- continued to pose and proposition him, he joined her in the lake, where they made wild romance.

After they awakened, however, a more subdued JJ suggested that they remember it to have been great and leave it at that. Frustrated, Ernie accepted this and told her that they should not go home until they had watched news reports and see if they were wanted. JJ convinced him that rather than drop off the kids with the cops, they should follow the kids' directions to where other kids were being held by Big O's brother and associate, Moloch.

They soon arrived at Sunshine Education Products, an alleged toy store, and saw an armed guard inside. Although Ernie remained reluctant, when the kids talked about the "dinosaur that might eat them," both he and JJ resolved to help them.

(Sachs & Violens#3 (fb) - BTS) - Putting buckets on the kids' heads, Ernie had then drive his van through the building's wall...

(Sachs & Violens#3) - ...and then Ernie drove another car, with a pair of Moloch's men strapped across his windshield, into the building, after which he threw a gas-emitting canister out the window. Wearing a gas suit, Ernie fired on the criminals and then made his way upstairs to find the kids and JJ, who had entered the building in her own fashion. As he climbed the stairs, Moloch, a flight below him, stabbed him in the side of his left calf. The two battled, and Moloch delivered sword-slashes to Ernie's abdomen and left arm. When Moloch prepared to finish him off, however, Sachs caught his dagger hand with her whip, and then Sachs tackled him to the ground. When Katie pulled the fire alarm, Moloch hurled Ernie off and fled. violens-schultz-ernie-s&v4-shoot

Back in the park, Ernie and Sachs had sex again, and they resolved to continue pursuit of Moloch...and Ernie told Sachs to call him Violens.

(Sachs & Violens#4 (fb) - BTS) - En route to New Orleans, Ernie and JJ stayed at some hotels. When they were low on cash after reaching New Orleans, they paid via credit card. Receiving a report of their credit card use, Lt. Kelso took some vacation time and traveled down there in hopes of arresting the pair.

(Sachs & Violens#4 (fb)) - At night in a motel, Ernie had a nightmare about his time in Vietnam. Waking up, he and JJ went down amidst the Fat Tuesday celebration, where he discussed the Rajah Krewe medallion he had taken off of Moloch during their fight. After noting that he had lived around there when he was young and robust, JJ pulled him into an alley to remind him that he was still robust, and they had sex against a wall, unknowingly observed by Big O's agent Rugmuncher.

As they subsequently checked out the former meeting place of the Rajah Krewe, JJ spotted Moloch's silhouette. While Ernie tried to question protesters and accidentally grabbed the butt of a man named Leo who was dressed similarly to Sachs, JJ scaled the building to spy on Moloch, learning about a bomb planted in a float, only to be engaged by Rugmuncher. She escaped and caught back up with Ernie, with Moloch, Rugmuncher, and some Rajah cultists in pursuit, but Leo helped them get away by ripping off his beaded necklaces and causing the pursuers to trip on the beads.

After JJ told Ernie about the bomb, they were spotted by and fled from Kelso, knocking partiers on the street out of the way. After JJ spotted the float, Ernie fired a gun into the air and shouted "For the Revolution" so as to sound like a terrorist and scare people out of the way. Finding the bomb with 3:23 on the timer and wired to explode if removed, Ernie told JJ to lose herself in the crows and then punched her to the ground when she tried to go with him, after which he drove the float at maximum speed, ramming other floats out of the way and firing over people's heads to get them to flee (although some people got trampled).

When Rugmuncher jumped on the float and tried to take Ernie out with a bola, JJ engaged her but was knocked off and dragged behind the float as she refused to let go of her whip. Hearing JJ cry out, Ernie turned and shot Rugmuncher through the head, chest, and abdomen, and she fell off the float. With JJ no longer attached, Ernie drove the float off a pier, and it exploded before it hit the water.

(Sachs & Violens#4 (fb) - BTS) - Having taken a beating while being dragged behind the float, JJ was hospitalized.

(Sachs & Violens#4 - BTS) - Lt. Kelso told MacArthur that the New Orleans district attorney office wanted to locate Schultz, after which JJ regained consciousness and related the events of New Orleans. After the police had departed, Moloch (who had been dressed as a nurse) attempted to kill JJ, but MacArthur fought and distracted Moloch until JJ could stab him in the neck with a syringe full of air (it was supposed to be in his jugular vein, but it was shown to be in the side of his fat neck...but I guess she got him, because he looked pretty dead thereafter).

(Sachs & Violens#4) - Ernie then arrived and was introduced to Mac.

(Sachs & Violens#4 (fb) - BTS) - Noting that they had to be like sharks and keep moving or die, Ernie took JJ and departed.violens-schultz-ernie-93151-ufav

(Ultraforce/Avengers#1) - Ernie and JJ were pulled into the Ultraverse (or some associated pocket dimension) along with multiple beings from multiple realities in locating and attacking Nemesis to prevent her from destroying their timelines. Nemesis seemingly destroyed (or perhaps banished) most of those beings, leaving behind only Earth-616's Avengers and Earth-93060's Ultraforce (including Hardcase)

(Fallen Angel#19 (fb) - BTS) - Violens and Sachs traveled the country, shutting down porn and vice operations.

(Fallen Angel#19 (fb) - BTS) - Violens and Sachs pursued Dave and Tommy in Detroit, despite the pair's attempt to lose them.

(Fallen Angel#19) - Getting ahead of the pair, Violens stood on the street waiting and then blew up their car with a dual missile launcher, after which Sachs stunned both men. After Violens disarmed Dave, they questioned the men, with Violens shooting Tommy when they refused to give information, and promising to shoot him repeatedly until the they got what they needed, after which they would give Tommy back his shotgun so he could express his appreciation to Dave. violens-schultz-ernie-93151-fai19-shouldercannon

(Fallen Angel#19 (fb) - BTS) - Tommy gave Sachs and Violens information on a child pornography ring allegedly run by Bumper Ruggs in the mystical city Bete Noire.

(Fallen Angel#19) - Violens and Sachs traveled to Bete Noire, with Violens smashing the monstrous Benny the Snake -- aka Ouroboros, the serpent from the Garden of Eden -- over the head with his shotgun and then gut-punching him when Benny attempted to devour a young tourist. They then questioned Benny and forced him to take them to him to Bumper.

Stopping for sex in an alley outside Bumper's brothel, Violens and Sachs were spotted by Bumper's video surveilance, and Bumper hired Fallen Angel (Liandra) to keep them away and kill them if she had to.

(Fallen Angel#20 (fb) - BTS) - As Violens and Sachs approached Bumper's brothel, Fallen Angel stood in their way.violens-schultz-ernie-93151-fai19-upshot

(Fallen Angel#20) - After Sachs ordered her out of the way, Fallen Angel unleashed an energy blast that knocked Violens into a car's windshield and Sachs into a brick wall. After Sachs hurt her fist punching Fallen Angel, Violens tackled her, but she flipped out of his way. Violens then dropped her with a gas grenade, but not before she ripped off his gas mask so that he fell as well.

While Sachs entered the building and found Bumper to be her sister, Mac, a revived Fallen Angel picked Violens up over her head, but he pulled her hair, paining her until she blasted him away again. When Violens wondered whether he could hurt her eyes, they were interrupted by Bete Noir's magistrate, Basil Juris, who ordered Angel to desist.

Sachs then revealed that Bumper was Mac, after which Fallen Angel noted that she had suspected a relationship and stated that she had allowed Violens to delay her. When Violens argued that he had been kicking her ass, she threatened to disembowel him, but Bumper convinced her to stand down, and Fallen Angel agrily departed.

After Bumper confirmed that she was not running a child pornography ring, Juris revealed that Benny the Snake was the one behind it. Juris subsequently convinced Violens to join him in checking in with Benny but then revealed that Benny was immortal and the serpent from the Garden of Eden. Although Violens disbelieved him, Juris told him that the job of chief enforcer was open and wondered if he would be interested.violens-schultz-ernie-93151-fai20-pickedup

(Fallen Angel II#8 (fb) - BTS) - Sick of tearing around the country, living hand to mouth, and having porn merchants and their goons shoot at them, JJ expressed a desire to stay in Bete Noire and to be by her sister.

Ernie agreed to stay and serve as chief enforcer of Bete Noire.

(Fallen Angel II#8) - Following some romance, Ernie noted that he could sense that there was a threat of some sort in Bete Noire. When JJ expressed concerns about being in Bete Noir and growing stale, Ernie realized that she meant that now that they were not constantly having their lives threatened, she was not certain whether he still turned her on. Assuring her that he neither could (nor implied would) ever do better than her, he departed, telling her to lock up when she left.

Black Mariah subsequently told Ernie about Sirocco, the head of a large criminal organization, after which they traveled to Furor's, where its owner, Dolph, told them Sirocco had been there asking about the Fallen Angel.

Later. at a church service presided over by Jude (the son of Liandra and Juris, who had taken over as the Magistrate of Bete Noire), Ernie and JJ eyed each other nervously.

Seeing a hidden bomb (planted by Sirocco), Ernie ordered everybody out, firing his gun to drive the urgency, after which the bomb exploded.

(Fallen Angel II#9) - Ernie shot Ram, the driver of Sirocco's car, and when Sirocco climbed out of the car, he ordered her not to move. Instead moving more swiftly than he could react, she dove to the side and then threw a dagger that struck him in the chest, dropping him.violens-schultz-ernie-93151-faii8-knifed

As Sirocco prepared to slay Ernie, however, JJ struck her in the arm with a shuriken (throwing star) and then threw another pair, ordering Sirocco to get away from him. Knocking both shuriken away, Sirocco nonetheless fled, and JJ rushed to Ernie's side, begging him not to die and telling him she would say anything.

(Fallen Angel II#9 (fb) - BTS) - Ernie was taken to Bumper's brothel, where Bumper bandaged Ernie, stopping the external bleeding, at least.

(Fallen Angel II#9) - Later, when JJ asked for the doctor, Bumper informed her that there were not doctors in Bete Noir, and Black Mariah clarified that Bete Noire controlled who stayed or left, who lived or died. JJ nonetheless departed, intending to kill Sirocco.

(Fallen Angel II#9 - BTS) - JJ engaged Sirocco, who ultimately escaped via helicopter.

(Fallen Angel II#11) - After resting for the night with JJ sleeping by his side, Ernie awakened and was surprised to find that his wound was healed, leaving only a scar (he had apparently been healed by Bete Noire). As JJ climbed on top of him and began to celebrate, Bumper walked in on them, and, at JJ's invitation, joined them.

Ernie subsequently visited Jude who introduced him to Maura, whose boyfriend, Keith, had gone crazy and then died after taking the drug Glory (which caused some vampiric effects), and then instructed him to arrest Asia Minor, who had supplied the drug.

(Fallen Angel II#12) - When Ernie showed up outside Asia Minor's mausoleum base with a number of armed men, they found Asia with Liandra, who wished his help to save Ezil, who had been bitten by the Glory-intoxicated Keith before his death. Asia Minor told her he could figure out a cure for Ezil if she prevented his arrest, and she confronted Ernie. Having prepared for a subsequent conflict with Liandra, Ernie had his men launch gas grenades at her, but she had been prepared for him as well and worn a gas mask. After Jude arrived and tried to talk her down, Liandra took Asia Minor and flew away. However, Bete Noire apparently returned Asia Minor to the mausoleum, where Ernie took him captive.

(Fallen Angel II#13) - Ernie entered Jude's office and found Maura dead, as she had tried to shoot Asia Minor and Jude had jumped in the way, and his magistrate power caused the bullet to strike her instead. Jude instructed Ernie to find a place to lock up Asia pending trial, as Bete Noire didn't have jail cells.

Ernie brought Asia into the trial Jude arranged him, but Jude subsequently succumbed to the voices and visions he saw and dropped to the ground screaming, leaving Ernie and Bumper to consider this to be messed up stuff (only they didn't say "messed" or "stuff.")

(Fallen Angel II#22) - Ernie and JJ rushed past the young James, with JJ shouting for everyone to get ready, as their targets were right around the corner, and Ernie replied, "Bring em on!" (I am not sure if they were after Gilles De Rais and his agents, the black-coated men, whom Liandra fought in that issue, or someone else).violens-schultz-ernie-93151-faii8-sansglasses

(Fallen Angel II#23) - I don't see JJ or Ernie in this issue...

(Fallen Angel II#24) - Jude called in Ernie into his office to deal with De Rais, who instead tossed Ernie across the room with one hand. After JJ wrapped her whip around De Rais' throat, choking him, Ernie sent Jude out of the room and told him to go down to his (Ernie's office and arm himself to survive). Ernie then shot De Rais three times, hoping that would finish him, but De Rais got up and then noted that he knew them, as they had fought someone using the alias of Moloch. Before jumping out of the window without harm, Del Rais warned them that they would soon meet the real thing. Ernie then noted that he was rounding up the guys, as they had a major problem.

Ernie subsequently drove himself and JJ to join up with Liandra and her predecessor, Lin.

(Fallen Angel II#25) - As Ernie drove Liandra and JJ back to the tower, where he was being held by his half-brother, Jubal, they crashed into a ward (mystic barrier), after which their ally Martelli ran into them from behind, unable to stop in time. Liandra correctly surmised that the ward was generated by Mariah's brother, Wilde; as Liandra unleashed her power against the barrier, Ernie realized he had been lucky when he had fought her before. Malachi subsequently helped Liandra break down the barrier, after which they were backed up by Asia Minor and his men. Ernie and JJ joined the others in assaulting the tower en force; Ernie and Asia laid down suppressing fire so the others could rescue Jude, and Ernie told JJ to be careful. However, Moloch -- who had possessed the form of Jubal -- then revealed his presence and decapitated Malachi.

(Fallen Angel II#26) - From the ground floor, Ernie heard JJ cry out when Moloch shattered her leg, and he rushed up to help her. He rushed in, guns-ablazing, but the bullets bounced off him and instead killed his mother, Xia. As Moloch advanced on Ernie, he fired his guns futilely into his chest and called to Liandra for aid. Moloch knocked him to the ground and tried to finish him off with his own weapons, which were by now empty, and Ernie stabbed the surprised Moloch in the calf, but the blade shattered harmlessly. However, having claimed Malachi's last breath from his disembodied head, then assaulted Moloch, blasting him out of the building.

Ernie carried JJ out, and they fled in a jeep driven by Asia as the tower collapsed; Asia was annoyed with Ernie's instructions to stop jostling the car around as it was hurting JJ's leg.

(Fallen Angel II#26 - BTS) - Liandra departed le Bete Noir with Jude. Having landed in the water, Moloch returned to land and proclaimed himself the new magistrate of Bete Noire.

(Fallen Angel II#28 (fb) - BTS) - Ernie and JJ remained in Bete Noire -- which healed JJ's leg -- and continued to resist Moloch's activities, based out of a subterranean mausoleum or something in Asia Minor's cemetery.

(Fallen Angel II#28 - BTS) - Moloch sent his new chief examiner, Ezil, to Asia Minor's base, asking about Ernie and JJ. Asia feigned ignorance of their whereabouts, but was warned to share information on them if he saw them again.

(Fallen Angel II#28) - Asia instructed Ernie and JJ to get out, giving them instructions of how to escape through a secret passage into the basement of a church. Ernie thanked Asia for the help he had provided him, and they took their arsenal and departed.

Subsequently meeting with their allies, Ernie and JJ prepared to confront Moloch, feeling that his having a human host meant he would be somehow vulnerable. Ernie further suggested that Benny may know Moloch's weakness, however, they were then confronted by Moloch. Unaffected by the consecrated ground due to having existed before the Judeo-Christian-Islamic religions, Moloch flattened Ernie's men. Even when JJ pushed an immense cement or marble cross on top of him, Moloch grabbed her, freed himself, semi-crucified her by binding her to the cross with barb-wire, and carried her and the cross away on his shoulder.

(Fallen Angel II#32 (fb) - BTS) - As the building collapsed, Ernie fled, figuring JJ was right behind him, and he didn't look back until it was too late.  violens-schultz-ernie-93151-faii33-shooting

(Fallen Angel II#29 - BTS) - Having whipped JJ repeatedly, Moloch tormented her with her lover's cowardly flight, but JJ told him that she had told Ernie to flee so he would not be captured as well.
Ezil informed Moloch he was heading out to try to locate Violens.

(Fallen Angel II#29) - Meanwhile, Ernie scaled the wall of Moloch's base.

(Fallen Angel II#30) - After Benny interrupted Moloch's harasssment of the bound JJ, whom he had been whipping, Ernie signaled Benny of his arrival before tossing a grenade at Moloch's feet. The explosion knocked Moloch off his feet and allowed Ernie to free and escape with JJ.

(Fallen Angel II#31 (fb) - BTS) - Benny led Ernie (with the unconscious JJ) to Benny's serpent-filled underground lair, where Benny assured him that no one could trespass there unless he allowed it.

(Fallen Angel II#31) - Ernie spoke to JJ to try to get her to wake up, and in her surprise, having last been in Moloch's presence, she shoved her palm into her face before apologizing. Benny assured them that -- as God loved tormenting him eternally -- they were protected there.

(Fallen Angel II#32) - Ernie brought Bumper to see her sister in Benny's base. When JJ showed her the last marks on her back, Bumper slapped Ernie, blaming him for allowing Moloch to do this to her. Admitting his own cowardice and mistaken assumption in contributing to this, Ernie handed Bumper his gun and told her to shoot him if it made her feel better. So Bumper shot him in the leg. Collapsing to the ground, Ernie called her a stupid bitch and noted that he didn't think she would really do it; after noting that insulting the person holding the gun was unwise, she informed him that she had only winged him and that he should be happy she had not shot him in his testicles.

(Fallen Angel II#32 - BTS) - Wilde -- Mariah's brother, who was allied with Moloch -- mystically located Ernie and JJ after extensively searching, determining that they were surrounded by snakes, and Moloch appreciated that this meant that they were in Ouroboros' lair. While he could not attack them there, Moloch felt confident that they wouuld come to them sooner or later.

(Fallen Angel II#32) - When the snakes began writhing around, Benny advised his guests that Jude and Liandra were returning to Bete Noire.

(Fallen Angel II#32 - BTS) - Wilde sensed this as well, and Moloch instructed De Rais to send his black-suited demons to receive them.

(Fallen Angel II#32) - As De Rais' demons confronted the arrivals, Ernie, JJ, and Benny took them out with Benny's guns. Moloch, De Rais, and Wilde then confronted them directly.

(Fallen Angel II#33 - BTS) - As Mr. Goode attempted to intervene in the conflict, the manifestation of God stopped him, telling him to "Let it be," like the Beatles had said.

(Fallen Angel II#33) - After Moloch punched away Liandra, Ernie, JJ, Bumper, and Benny fired on him futilely until Benny transformed into snake form and swallowed Moloch whole. Meanwhile, Mariah took Wilde out with a grenade and Asia used his holy water-soaked hook hand to tear out De Rais' throat.

After Moloch tore Ouroboros apart and freed himself, Jude impaled himself with a (Biblical?) mystic sword -- which he had acquired alongside Liandra and Mariah in this whole mystic journey that took place over the preceding issues in scenes not involving Ernie or JJ -- and sacrificed his life thusly granted him the power to destroy Moloch...which he did.

(Fallen Angel II#33 - BTS) - Offered the chance by God to return to Heaven, Liandra instead asked to restore her son at any cost. As a result, she became the magistrate of Bete Noire, while the burn-scar covered Jude served as its defender/agent as the Patron Saint of Lost Causes.

violens-schultz-ernie-93151.jpgComments: Created (and owned) by Peter David and George Perez (or, their estates) under both the Epic Comics and Heavy Hitters imprints.
Peter David subsequently used Sachs and Violens (and Mac) in his Fallen Angel series under DC comics, which took place in the mystical city Bete Noir.

I wrote this profile over two years before Peter David's death, but it is an excellent example of Peter's creativity, as well as a relatively rare chance to write adult-themed material.

Of course, Ernie has a friend named "Bert."

I started this profile on Ernie "Violens" Schultz, thinking it just covered the four issue series and the cameo in Ultraforce/Avengers...only after I had covered that material did I do an internet search for any appearances or information I may have missed so I could research it, and then I found out about all of the Fallen Angel stories, none of which I owned at the time. If I had known about the multiple appearances in Fallen Angel in advance, I'm sure I would have just covered the Axecutioner or someone more minor. However, I really enjoyed reading the Fallen Angel stories, and I'm glad I had the chance to read them...speaking of which...

So...you should read the Sachs and Violens series, and all of the Fallen Angel runs. Peter David is one of my favorite writers, and the Fallen Angel series and Bete Noir are WAY too complex for a simple summary.
Bete Noir is the Biblical city of Enoch, built by Cain and named after his son. The city itself is a character in the series, as it influences what happens to those in it.
I reviewed the summaries of the series and characters on Wikipedia, and it fits with what I recall from reading the series, so check that out.
And then go BUY THE ISSUES AND READ THEM, either physically or digitally, or both.
UNLESS you're easily offended, in which case, DO NOT read them...and then why are you reading this profile anyway...you were warned all the way at the top of the profile. BLAME YOURSELF if you continued reading after that.

I think I may EVENTUALLY include Fallen Angel, Bete Noir, etc. on the Appendix due to the Sachs and Violens connection, but probably not until I finish covering Dreadstar and Nevada and 'Breed characters/stories...so, until then, you'll get character references in the issues, but not complete explanations.
Additionally, I have the original issues of the DC series, but the trade paperbacks of the IDW issues, and it is not alway 100% clear to me when one issue ends and another starts, as there are not covers before each issue (they're all at the end), and there are not "to be continued" or "next issue" blurbs...you just have to see where there seems to be a dramatic break every 20 or so pages...
So you should read the issues yourself...unless you're easily offended, in which case, see the above paragraph.

The Sachs and Violens series took place in Reality-93151. Bete Noir is somewhat unique, but the presence of Bumper (Sach's sister) would seem to imply that they were in the same reality. However, it is never clearly spelled out, and I doubt it ever will be.
    But, we can only hope...

There's no evidence of reality-hopping for Sachs and Violens to get to Bete Noir, the setting for Fallen Angel, which suggests it is their native reality. And Illyria from the TV series Angel, itself a spin-off from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has a crossover with Fallen Angel. There's no explicit-reality hopping done to facilitate this, though the way Illyria travels to Bete Noir does allow for the possibility (she gets transported there via magical means). So it is possible that Sachs and Violens are residents of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reality.

Fallen Angel also features an appearance from crossover-queen Shi, which might complicate things.--David A. Zuckerman
