formerly an unrevealed location on Korbin
First Appearance: Stormbreaker: The Saga of Beta Ray Bill#2 (April, 2005)
Powers/Abilities: Ven had no superhuman powers.
He was apparently gifted in astronomy, as he was the first on his world to discuss a threat approaching from space, and he was able to calculate its size, velocity and trajectory, as well as to appreciate when it changed course.
He was briefly trained in military
skills, presumably including spacecraft operation, some forms of combat
and possibly military strategy.
History:
(Stormbreaker: The Saga of Beta Ray Bill#2 (fb) - BTS) - After
the military had scrapped the great fleet with which the Korbinites had
previously traveled, the priesthood, having foreseen the prophecy of
Ashta, the god of destruction, they planned to use the high-density
Meta-Orb, which could be filled with the
life-forces of the Korbinites via the same technology used to transfer
Bill into his constructed Beta Ray Bill form.
(Stormbreaker: The Saga of Beta Ray Bill#2 (fb)) <Several months before the main story> - Having discovered something in the night sky, student Ven showed it to a fellow student. As Ven calculated its velocity, the other student considered that it looked like a ship but it was too far away and must be massive. After the anomaly changed directions and began heading directly toward their world, Ven concluded that being was Ashta (in reality, it was Galactus, who appeared in the form of Ashta to the Korbinites), after which he abruptly left the observatory and returned to his home.
Back at his home, Ven spoke to his lover (or
spouse?), Sala, that if his conclusion was wrong that he could be
expelled or tried for heresy. At Sala's urging, he finally revealed
that Ashta was coming, and she convinced him that he had to tell his
professors, relating that if he were right, he would be a hero for
providing this information while if he did not, the consequences could
be devastating.
When Ven shared his data with his professors, they denounced his claims as false and as heresy, and they dismissed him. As they started to drag him out, Ven told them that he would accept censure if he were wrong but insisted that they look at his data. Finally the head professor agreed to look but insisted that Ven tell no one.
(Stormbreaker: The Saga of Beta Ray Bill#2
(fb) - BTS) - Convinced of the threat, the head professor presented the
data to science council, who denounced it as doctored data by a
religious fanatic. However, having learned of this threat, the military
then commandeered the facility and their data. When the priesthood
learned, they accepted this as the prophecy of Ashta and went public.
Having prepared for this and with the military
having scrapped the great fleet with which they had previously
traveled, the priesthood convinced the public to have their bodies
converted into energy and stored within a Meta-Orb from which they
could later be restored.
(Stormbreaker:
The
Saga of Beta Ray Bill#2 (fb)) - As Ven and Sala waited in line,
Sala noted that she had friends who believed Beta Ray Bill would return
and save them. Ven told her that he thought it was time to stop putting
their faith in others and that they must face life or death together.
He told Sala that he hoped that they would not be able to feel while
they were in the Meta-Orb as they might be in there a long time.
However, he hoped they could dream of being together and teased that
they could dream of eating her horrible cooking.
Soldiers then separated Ven and Sala despite
Ven's protests, telling them there would be chaos if they allowed
everyone to pick their own order and assuring them that all lines were
going to the same place. Restrained by the soldiers, Ven watched as
Sala called out his name as she was placed into the device, transformed
into energy and sent into the Meta-Orb.
Thereafter, the soldiers apologized for the
subterfuge and informed Ven and the other men they had been drafted and
that they would have the honor of fighting with them to assure
Korbinite survival. Accepting this, Ven quietly said goodbye to Sala.
(Stormbreaker: The Saga of Beta Ray Bill#3
(fb)) - While other draftees doubted the veracity of the threat, Ven
told them that he had been the one who first discovered the threat, and
he confirmed it to be Ashta.
Later, they shared who they had left behind and
hoped that they were safe within the Meta-Orb. They were then
interrupted by soldiers who told them that they were shipping out. Ven
or one of the others noted that they had only begun their training, but
they were advised that their timetable had been moved up and that
everyone was going into battle.
They reluctantly boarded a large ship that was still under construction, after which Ven asked that their gods would preserve them, and one of the men prayed to Beta Ray. As Ven argued that Bill had forsaken them, they observed as their ships were being destroyed by Ashta (which was actually a form of Galactus)
(Stormbreaker: The Saga of Beta Ray Bill#1 - BTS /
Stormbreaker:
The Saga of Beta Ray Bill#4 (fb)) <Days before the main story> -
Having donned their spacesuits, Ven and his fellow draftee soldiers
watched other ships being destroyed by "Ashta," and their own ship was
hit, but then they saw the arrival of Beta Ray Bill, as well as his
subsequent attack by Alpha Ray.
Ven and the others headed to the armory in the
center of their ship to avoid the peripheral damage. However, before
they could do so, a hole was blown in their ship, and Ven watched
helplessly as some other soldiers were pulled out into space, including
one for whom he futilely reached as the man called his name.
(Stormbreaker: The Saga of Beta Ray Bill#1 -
BTS / Stormbreaker: The Saga of Beta Ray Bill#5 (fb)) - Ven and the
other survivors gathered in a central, heavily-armored room, after
which a bulkhead blew and they lost power to lights and communication,
at least. Ven or another young soldier proclaimed that they were all
going to die, but an older soldier told him to calm down and assured
him that they would do their duty.
After hours, Ben or another wondered if the fighting was over. However, Galactus' herald Stardust then tore into the chamber. As the soldiers futilely opened fire, Stardust slaughtered them. Cast out into space with his faceplate cracked, Ven spoke to Sala, telling her that if there was life after this, he hoped they would be together, and he hoped the Meta-Orb was safe.
Ven presumably
perished in space.
(Stormbreaker: The Saga of Beta Ray Bill#1 -
BTS) - After assuming his conventional form, Galactus consumed New
Korbin, which was shattered in the process.
(Stormbreaker: The Saga of Beta Ray Bill#2
(fb) - BTS) - Bill's intelligent ship and companion, Skuttlebutt,
located the Meta-Orb.
Comments: Created by Michael Avon Oeming, Dan Berman and Andrea Divito.
While the flashback in Stormbreaker: The Saga of Beta Ray Bill#3 said "several months before the main story," I think that there were likely weeks to months occurring during the flashback in #2, and perhaps even weeks during the flashback in #3, as the assault against Ashta (Galactus) and the arrival of Beta Ray Bill was taking place inStormbreaker: The Saga of Beta Ray Bill#1, so Ven's death occurred during the events of #1.
For being the main character
in the flashbacks, Ven is rarely pictured in any sort of straight-on
pose...usually obliqued or with some distraught expression and/or eyes
closed.
As the Korbinites lack many
distinguishing facial features, it would also have helped to tell who
was whom if more of them were given names...
I (or someone else) will cover
Sala and the Meta-Orb at some point after the event's conclusion, as
well as the Korbinite race eventually.
