History:
(Teen-Age Romance I#84) - Sheila Van Reynolds was a popular young woman. When she went to the beach she was mobbed by adoring men (such as Don) whom she thought of as her "subjects." When Len brought out his new raft, he invited her to join him and another man for a ride. However, the lifeguard Jack Brown stopped them just as they left shore, informing them of regulations that allowed only two people on a raft. Jack forced them to return to shore. Sheila was frustrated by Jack's behavior and on shore, told Jack she could have him reported for his rudeness and informed him, "I'm Sheila Van Reynolds! I could have you lose your job!" However, Jack already knew who she was and wasn't intimidated by her threats.
Jack ignored Sheila for the rest of the day while Sheila's anger towards him simmered. By the time she left the beach she was so frustrated that she gripped her car's steering wheel as though she wanted "to tear it in two." Even by evening she hadn't forgotten Jack and wondered why she couldn't get him out of her mind, considering he probably didn't have "a penny to his name" and was likely "all muscle and no brains."
The next day when Sheila drove back to the beach she saw Jack at the side of the road, trying to hitchhike to the beach. Sheila pointedly pretended she didn't see him and drove past. On the beach, she found herself feeling restless and bored. When Jack finally arrived and took up his position as lifeguard she started to talk loudly to one of her friends about how much she despised "empty-headed musclemen."
When Jack took a break, Sheila found him reading a book and chided him, asking if it were a Mickey Spillane novel or a comic book. Jack asked her why she was going out of her way to taunt him. Sheila refused to admit she was taunting him, claiming she didn't know he existed and that she didn't associate with lifeguards "or other menials!" Later that day she went out for a spin on Larry's new yacht but she still found herself thinking about the lifeguard.
In the days and weeks that followed, Sheila continued to find herself thinking of the lifeguard and found it hard to admit she was attracted to someone she considered "uneducated." On the last day of the beach season she decided to approach him; up until then, she hadn't even learned his name. Much to her surprise, her friend Natalie Royalton greeted the lifeguard with a kiss and introduced him to Sheila as Jack Brown, then revealed they'd started dating during the beach season and were now engaged. Rather than an uneducated man, as Sheila had assumed, Jack was studying for his doctorate in science. When Natalie remarked how lucky she was to hook up with Jack before someone else could "stake a claim," Sheila understood that she could have had Jack for herself if she'd been willing to confront her feelings sooner.

Jack Brown was a lifeguard who encountered Sheila Van Reynolds. After Jack prevented Sheila from taking a raft ride with two of her admirers, Sheila took a dislike to him and was infuriated that he knew who she was but wasn't intimidated by her. Sheila assumed Jack was an uneducated man but he was actually studying for a doctorate in science. While Sheila continued to hold him at arm's length, unwilling to admit she was attracted to him, Natalie Royalton got to know him and by the end of the beach season they were engaged. Natalie's father wanted Jack to join his engineering firm once he graduated from university.
