(Savage Sword of Conan I#225/2 (fb) - BTS) - When
Merina was seven-years-old, Daquius -- who was famed for his fairness, was asked to
mediate between Turan and Khorusan/Khorusun in Aghrapur. (Red Sonja II#1 (fb) - BTS) - Planning to take
Merina with him aboard the "Summer Star" ship, Daquius sought to
hire a pair of trained swordsmen to protect his daughter. (Red Sonja II#1) - Having learned of Daquius' need
for bodyguards, Red Sonja and her companion Zora met with him
and convinced him to hire them, after which he introduced them
to the treasure he wished them to protect: Merina. Merina told her father that they wore swords but that none of the toy soldiers with which she played were women. |
Sonja was recovered by the
following day when the Summer Star was beset by pirates, and
Sonja had Zora take Merina below the deck while she engaged the
pirates. When the pirate captain, Kirkos, prepared to engage
Sonja, he recognized Daquius as his brother, and he aborted the
assault, commanding his crew back to their ship. (Red Sonja II#2 - BTS) - Presumably seeking to
meet up with Daquius, Kirkos traveled to Aghrapur, where he was
recognized as a pirate, captured, and imprisoned. (Red Sonja II#2 / Savage
Sword of Conan I#225/2 (fb)) - En route to
Aghrapur, Zora taught Merina archery. Following Daquius' meeting with King Yildiz, he spotted Kirkos being marched down the street prior to his execution. Daquius explained his relationship to and his desire to rescue Kirkos, and Sonja made a plan to do that with him while leaving Zora behind to protect Zora. However, when Zora removed the wrappings from an idol that had the masculine form of the androgynous Red Goddess Zora's people had worshipped, Zora fainted, and Merina was captured by members of Kirkos' crew, figuring to ransom her. |
After Kirkos had been rescued by Sonja,
Kirkos' crewmen brought Merina to him, they recognized each other
(Merina recognized him by his real name, Brandus, but Kirkos explained
to her to use his new name). However, they were swiftly beset by
Turanian soldiers, seeking to recapture Kirkos, and so Kirkos and his
crew took Merina, Sonja, and Zora with them and fled aboard his ship.
Understanding only that his daughter
had been abducted by the pirates and was aboard that ship, Daquius led a
Turanian ship to pursue and board the pirate ship. While Merina was
hidden below the deck, she took the bow and arrows of a fallen pirate
and made her way up to the ship's crow's nest. She was too late to stop
her father from being slain by a Turanian captain who saw his speaking
to Kirkos as the misunderstanding was explained, but Merina slew that
Turanian with an arrow and then proceeded to take out a number of other
Turanians, allowing Kirkos' pirates and Sonja to finish off their
attackers. However, a Turanian aboard their warship fired an arrow at
Sonja, and Zora dove in its path to save her, and was slain instead.
After Sonja slew Zora's killer, Merina
knelt before her father's corpse before Kirkos had it committed to the
sea. Merina -- who had fallen in love with the sea -- then expressed her
desire to stay with her uncle, and Sonja left her with him. Kirkos gave
Merina a new name to go with her new life: Valeria.

(Savage Sword of Conan I#225/2 (fb)) - For the next year or two, Valeria watched many sea raids from hiding, fiercely determined to one day take part in them. Realizing that if he did not, someone else would, Kirkos trained Valeria in swordsmanship. Eventually, however, Kirkos decided to send Valeria back to Aquilonia with enough treasure that she would be accepted into the household of her maternal uncle Clesus. Caring little for Valeria, Clesus used the gold to move them to Kordava, Zingara where he used the last of Valeria's money to set himself up as a merchant prince with a few Zingaran ships, which were sunk by Barachan pirates.
<Four years before the story in Savage Sword of Conan I#225> - Clesus sought to regain his wealth by marrying Merina (as he called her) to Dom Delaris, the richest man in Kordava, in exchange for an en route chest of gems. Despite her wishes to the contrary, Valeria was dressed for marriage, but she fled. When her uncle pursued and began battering her with plans to drag her back to Delaris, she stabbed him in the thigh and dove into the waters at the port of Kordava, capital of Zingara.
(Savage Sword of Conan I#225/2 (fb)) <Four years before the story in Savage Sword of Conan I#225> - From the port of Kordava, Valeria swam into the water and climbed aboard the ship containing Delaris' dowry. After descending a rope into the cargo bay, she tied the chest to her back, climbed back up the rope, and threw the chest into the water in an effort to prevent her marriage. The guard confronted her, intrigued by her actions, and bade her -- under the threat of calling out the captain -- tell her reasons to cast the chest overboard rather than steal it.
The guard convinced her that her uncle and Delaris would still try to marry her, and she resolved to join the crew by cutting her hair, wearing baggy clothing, and posing as a boy named Val.
(Savage Sword of Conan I#77/3 (fb) - BTS) - Captain Rogarth of Vanaheim took Valeria off of a sinking ship and raised her as his own daughter. At Valeria's insistence, Rogarth trained her as a pirate.
(Savage Sword of Conan I#77/3 (fb) - BTS) - Valeria was
known for forcing her pirate brethren to to spare the lives of innocent
sea-farers.
(Savage Sword of Conan I#196) - "Val" was aboard the Zingaran merchant ship carrying Lady Morganis of Kordava when it was sacked by the crew of the Red Hand, led by Captain Strombanni and including second mate Conan of Cimmeria. After taking out the rest of the crew, Strombanni and Conan found Lady Morganis, but when Strombanni expressed a desire to force himself on her, "Val" rushed out from behind a curtain, tackled Strombanni, and tried to finish him with a dagger. Strombanni grabbed the face of the "boy," but Val sliced his shoulder, forcing him to let go; however, Conan then rushed forward and punched the "boy" unconscious, after which they realized the attacker was a girl.
They were soon after beset by Black
Zarono and the crew of the Petrel, who had followed the Red Hand,
knowing Strombanni was seeking the legendary Treasures of Trannicos.
When Strombanni slipped on blood on the deck, the recovered Valeria
saved Strombanni from Zarono, leading Zarono and his crew to retreat to
the Petrel and negotiate an agreement to split the treasure should they
discover it. Impressed with Valeria's courage and fighting abilities,
Strombanni invited her to join his crew and become a Barachan
pirate; she accepted, liking the sound of "Valeria of the Red
Brotherhood." Conan recognized Valeria's experience and was surprised to
find that they had Red Sonja of Hyrkania in common as allies, but
Valeria sensed him looking at her body as they spoke, and she broke off
the conversation and kept her distance from him.
(Savage Sword of Conan I#196) - Strombanni's first mate, Galacus, unsuccessfully tried to force
himself on Valeria once or twice.
Later, after Strombanni and Conan had
departed to explore the island of Tothmekri, along with Zarono and an
equal number of men from both crews, Galacus tried to force himself on
Morganis. Valeria cold-cocked Galacus and then took Morganis in a
rowboat in an effort to save her from further assaults. However, they
arrived on the island nearby the others just after the Devourer of the
Dead had been magically summoned by a spell-trap set long ago by
Tothmekri. Conan saved Valeria and Morganis from the Devourer, which he
subsequently neutralized by shattering the mystic talisman that had
summoned it.
Valeria explained her presence by
claiming that Morganis had fallen overboard, and Conan, having glimpsed
her rowboat, kept her secret, hoping to eventually and willingly romance
Valeria.
(Savage Sword of Conan I#197 (fb) -
BTS) - Darrus attempted to grope Valeria and lost a finger as a result (she said he was counting on four fingers,
which is normal, as you only have four fingers and a thumb on each
hand, but I think it is clear that she meant four digits and that he
had lost a digit).
(Savage Sword of Conan I#197) -
Valeria remained silent during a challenge between Conan and Zarono,
after which Conan chose her to accompany him and Morganis into Messantia
to meet with the merchant Publio in hopes of contacting Morganis'
husband, Lord Hambria of Kordava, and arranging her ransom. En route,
Conan mentioned Belit, but when Valeria asked about the legendary
pirate, Conan refused to talk about it, although he did note that
Belit was the best pirate with whom he had ever served; Valeria silently
took ire with that comment. Valeria subsequently knocked out -- with a kick and a punch -- the half-drunk
guards Licio and Marsius who sought to take the two women.
In Publio's house, Valeria stood back as Conan agreed to Publio's plan -- at Morganis' request and direction -- to send his agent Ram Lal to retrieve the Dragon of Kao Tsu (called "Kaontsu" in its first reference and then "Kao Tsu" consistently thereafter) from Ahmak -- along with its replica/fake (to ensure the correct one was obtained) -- to serve as the ransom for Publio to deliver Morganis to Hambria.
(Savage Sword of Conan I#197 - BTS) - Meanwhile, Strombanni and Galacus, along with Zarono and his agent Zingelito, met with Bragatos, who possessed another map to the Treasures of Trannicos. However, someone knocked over the miserly Bragatos' sole candle and then slew Bragatos and stole the map before the candle could be re-lit. All present suspected each other, but they ultimately fled from guards..
(Savage Sword of Conan I#197) - However, after Ram Lal had alerted the guards before fleeing
back to Publio, delivering the fake dragon to him before fleeing again,
Publio sent Conan and Valeria to recover the real dragon. Avoiding
guards along the way, they found Ram Lal dead of a slit throat and
bereft of the real dragon; they fought their way free from additional
guards and joined up with Morganis, who had fled Publio's domicile.
In an effort to escape the guards, they entered the Temple of a Thousand Gods, which contained idols of numerous gods of numerous faiths; however, Ahmak's Zamoran agent Tureem led him to them and then used his spider amulet to animate a large marble idol of Omm. The Omm idol slew Ahmak, and Conan slew Tureem, but this failed to stop the idol. Although Valeria's swordstrike to Omm idol's leg did not harm it, it distracted the idol sufficiently for Conan to escape its mandibles, after which Conan toppled the statue of the death god Dagon and drove its sword to impale the Omm idol, which stopped flailing moments later.
Valeria, Conan and Morganis
subsequently met up with Strombanni, Galacus,
Zarono and Zingelito, and -- after reviewing their adventures and
issues-- they all returned to the Red Hand.
(Savage Sword of Conan I#198) - As Conan wrestled fellow crewman Ravio for sport, Valeria, knowing Conan would win, refused to bet on him on principle. When another of the crewmen leaned on her and asked why she did not bet on him, she advised him to remove his arm from her shoulder before she removed it from his. After the Red Hand's crew rescued the adrift votaries of Atarata, Morganis hoped that Strombanni would be drawn to them and leave her alone, but Valeria advised her that if that happened, she would have to find a new place to sleep. As the men of the crew began to fall under the votaries' influence, Valeria was frustrated with the behavior of men and women that she did not understand.
After they docked in Port Tortage,
Valeria observed even Conan falling under their influence, however
briefly. Later, at the Sign of the Skull tavern, she mocked Conan as
having returned from tucking the priestesses into bed, but when he
offered to tuck her in, she punched him in the jaw. While Conan was
knocked to the ground, both he and the other pirates all roared with
laughter, while Valeria angrily departed, noting that she would wager
that Conan would have a sore jaw when he awakened the next day.
After all the men of Tortage -- save Conan, whose non-Hyborian nature spared him from Atarata's influence -- fell under the votaries' influence, Asa instructed Valeria and the "fallen women who cling like filthy barnacles to this island's men" that they must leave Tortage at once, never to return. Valeria was surprised when the ensorceled men went along with this and although she drew her sword and fought back, she was swiftly overwhelmed. She asked Conan if he was going to let them drag her off like this, but he replied only, while sipping his beer, "What did you ever do for me, girl?"
The ensorcelled men carried Valeria and the other women -- who also were immune to Atarata's influence -- off to Red Ortho's Pelican ship, and he -- at the votaries' bidding -- took them away to the mainland.
(Savage Sword of Conan I#199 (fb) -
BTS) - After Red Ortho asked Valeria to be his first mate, she departed
with him in search of Zingaran merchant vessels. Morganis, at least,
appreciated that Ortho wanted Valeria to be more mate than first.
(Savage Tales I#2 (fb) - BTS) - Valeria joined a group of pirates known as the Red Brotherhood.
(Savage Sword of Conan I#225 (fb) - BTS) - As she departed
Conan's company, she was first mate on Red Ortho's galleon as a Barachan
pirate.
(Savage Sword of Conan I#225 (fb)) - Valeria participated
in looting Zingaran merchant men and the occasional vessel from Shem or
Stygia. This was the life she had longed for ever since being a child,
and it mattered little to her whether the pickings were slim or
sumptuous. She intended to remain a pirate forever.
However, after a number of unsubtle
hints, Red Ortho made it clear what he expected from Valeria. Resisting
the urge to skewer him on the spot, Valeria fended him off with vague
promises until the ship neared the coast of Kush, off Zabhela, at which
point she jumped overboard and swam ashore.
As the Kushite city had underwent a
recent revolution, the people wanted no part of any white mercenary, let
alone a woman. However, a Shemite trader took a liking to her, gifting
her with a pellet able to emit thick black smoke to hide one from one's
enemies, and he told her of the Zingaran Zarallo who had brought his
"Free Companies" (sic) south to guard the Darfar border at Sukhmet.
Valeria joined the east-bound caravan.
After the caravan-master led them into the Lake Zuad swamps to avoid a sandstorm, they were attacked by Darfari cannibals. The caravan-master was wounded and left behind, and Valeria took command of the caravan.
(Savage Sword of Conan I#225) - Aided by a group that
turned out to be some of Zarallo's Free Companions, Valeria's caravan
drove off the cannibals. She then greeted the rescuers, who included
Conan and their captain, Makhis, who allowed Valeria's group to ride
along them. She listened as Conan related the moon-eating ritual of the
Darfari, and they considered the Darfari may have used the captured
caravan-master to perform their ritual.
Makhis invited Valeria to have a drink
with him and they could discuss how he could sponsor her in the Free
Companions, but she informed him that she only drank in groups or alone.
After Makhis' departure, Conan advised her that it was not wise to anger
one who would soon be her superior officer, but Valeria expressed her
frustration with men seeking to have their way with her. After Conan
shared the details of how he had joined Zarallo's Free Companions,
Valeria revealed the events leading to her arrival there as well.
Rebuffing Conan's romantic advances, she called it a night.
Overnight and under the full moon, they
were beset by Darfari who had underwent the moon-eating ritual. Conan
heard them coming and alerted Valeria and the others, but the tribesmen
proved immune to their weapons and captured Valeria, Conan, and at least
some of the others. As the Darfari prepared to roast Valeria first,
Conan found the black pellet Valeria had gained from the Shemite trader
and then challenged the Darfari leader that he could prove his medicine
(magic) was better than the Darfari's. In response, Conan hurled the
pellet into the sky where its thick black smoke blocked out the moon,
making it look like he had killed the moon. With the Darfari's belief in
their invulnerability shaken, Conan slew their leader and freed Valeria
and the others, and they fought their way away and fled on horseback.
Some days later, Valeria and the others
arrived in Sukhmet, and Conan's vouching for her convinced Zarallo to
accept Valeria into his company, although it infuriated Valeria that
this was necessary.
(Savage Tales I#2 (fb) - BTS) - In Sukhmet, Valeria served under Zarello in the Free Companions.
(Savage Sword of Conan I#225) - Regardless,
Valeria received only the lowest jobs, like night guard duty, and
Captain Makhis always watched her.
(Savage Tales I#3 (fb) - BTS) - In the Sukhmet barracks, Valeria punched a Khitan wrestler, breaking his jaw and knocking him senseless.
(Savage Tales I#2 (fb) - BTS / Savage
Sword of Conan I#225) - Eventually
at
a tavern, Makhis attempted to force himself on Valeria, and she fatally
stabbed him. Zarallo announced that for killing a Stygian officer, she
had forfeited her protection and that she would have to pay the price,
although he had his troops hold back Makhis' vengeful brother, Thebnu.
During that struggle, Valeria fled and escaped Sukhmet on horseback.
(Savage Sword of Conan I#225) - Initially
heading west toward Stygia, on a sudden impulse, Valeria headed south
back toward Darfar.
(Savage Tales I#2 (fb) - BTS) - Valeria was unaware that Conan followed her, also on horseback.
(Savage Tales I#2 (fb) - BTS / Savage Sword of Conan I#225) - Zarallo's patrols followed
Valeria's trail west and lost her, but Thebnu identified her change in
direction and followed her south.
(Savage Tales I#2 (fb) - BTS / Savage
Sword of Conan I#225) <The day before the main
story> - Conan slew Thebnu and left his carcass for the vultures.
(Savage Tales I#2) -
After glimpsing the walled city of Xuchotl, Valeria was approached by
Conan and resisted his advances until drawn to the sound of the
dragon-god (a carnivorous stegosaurus-like creature) devouring their
horses. The two narrowly survived an encounter that apparently slew the
creature and subsequently approached and entered the jade-laced Xuchotl.
When she napped while Conan looked around, Valeria awakened to observe
the macabre Burning Skull encountering Techotl and Chicmec of the
Tecuhltli of the Western Gate. After Valeria had slain the Burning Skull
and destroyed the magical skull itself, Techotl told her of the his
people and their enemies, the Xotalancas of the Eastern Gate, after
which they sought to locate Conan.

(Conan:
River
of Blood#1 (fb) - BTS) - Apparently seeking to lay a false trail, Conan
convinced Valeria to row a canoe down a river.

(Savage Sword of Conan
I#170 - BTS) - At some point, Valeria sailed the fleshpots of the bottom
of the world with the Red Brotherhood. She learned to curse in any
language and to understand most.
(Savage Sword of
Conan I#170) - After Valeria shared what she had learned, Varnigern was
desperate to acquire this giant gem, and he agreed to Valeria's demand
that they be equal partners on an expedition to acquire this gem. As the
ship prepared to depart, they were joined by Conan, who sought to leave
this port (he did not relate that he was seeking to escape a group of
people seeking to kill him). Although still irritated at Conan for
abandoning her, Valeria vouched for Conan, and Varnigern accepted him.
Conan eventually slew a seal-like creature, and they harvested the meat
and fat to eat and insulate themselves. A giant seal-creature shattered
the ice beneath their feet, and Conan speared it and rode it underwater
until sharks gathered by its blood fed on it, and he returned to the
surface. Valeria and Sonja lit a fire from the seal's fat to dry their
clothes, and they made a broth from the seal-creature's blood.
En route, the two men sought to partake of Valeria's favors, and she slew
or cast both men overboard shortly before she encountered rapids that she
narrowly survived before her ship became stuck by a town. There she
encountered the Iron Damsels, whom she enlisted to protect her from the
pursuing Conan, with whom they held a grudge due to previous encounters.
After Sloth was pulled under and perished trying to
cross a marsh, Conan paid a local to guide their way across. When they
next encountered the Pictish totem of Otah, the Lizard God, Valeria mocked
it as a scarecrow. After reaching fresh water, Valeria resolved to take a
bath, and Conan chose to watch over her. While Conan initially resisted,
Valeria eventually seduced him, telling him that the world was a hard and
cruel place and that they must take their pleasures where they may.
When they subsequently found the only path through a
Pictish village, Conan advised they wait until the dead of night and then
cross, although they heard the monstrous growl of Otah from the woodlands.
As Ymac stood guard, however, Valeria led Rhonk to strike him from behind,
after which they attempted to get to the lost city on their own.
(Savage Sword of Conan
I#139 (fb) - BTS) - Suspecting mutiny/treachery from her crew aboard the
Sea Fox, Valeria had Conan remain on a nearby cliffside armed with bow and
arrows.
(Savage
Sword of Conan I#73 (fb) - BTS) - Valeria served under Rogarth of
Vanaheim.
(Savage Sword of Conan
I#201 (fb) - BTS) - Conan heard that Valeria had "taken up with some
trader from Messantia," but he didn't credit it. Comments: Created by Robert E. Howard.
Adapted to Marvel by Roy Thomas and Barry Smith
"Red Nails" was the last Conan story written by Robert E. Howard before his death.
Her father's name was "Daquius" in Red Sonja II#1-2, but "Daquis" in SSoC#225/2
Thanks to MarvelousLuc for cleaning up the SSoC#215 cover image, removing the text, etc.!
Giant-Size Conan#1 has King Conan
flashback to his past "in league with Valeria of the Red Brotherhood."
It may or may not be a new scene. I'm not sure if the
serpent creature goes with her of the Kozaki?
It is odd that Valeria does not remember Red Sonja nor does Sonja remember
Valeria in Savage Sword of Conan I#170 or 179, as Red Sonja had spent a
significant amount of time with Valeria, protecting and training her when
Valeria was a young girl. While the Savage Sword of Conan#225/2 that
covers their interactions had not come out yet, the Red Sonja II#1-2
issues had come out seven years before.
Sonja's lack of recognition is more understandable, as
not only was Valeria a fairly young girl, she was not even going by the
name Valeria at that time: She was still Merina.
However, it's a little harder to explain Valeria's lack
of memory of the woman who had trained her. As Merina, she was younger,
and she had a hard life of fighting, with lots of blows to the head.
Perhaps she was so infatuated with Conan at the time that she was overcome
with emotion and could not think straight or remember her youth at the
time.
Maybe after she'd had some time to think about it after
getting out of the Arctic, Valeria wondered if the Sonja could have been
the same woman who raised her.
Or, maybe Valeria did recognize Sonja, but she was
still so overcome with emotions that she didn't even care, and she fought
Sonja anyway.
Additionally, I would definitely bet on Sonja to take
Valeria in a fight; I wouldn't think it would be that close of a fight.
It's hard to place the various stories in chronological order. The biggest
difference I could see is before and after when Valeria shared romance. I
would have thought that the "Island of Pirates' Doom" story from Savage
Sword of Conan#73-79 would have taken place earlier in her chronology, but
the "Man in the Iron Tower" story in Savage Sword of Conan#201, shortly
before Conan became King of Aquilonia, has Conan specifically reference
Islands of Pirates' Doom as something he had heard of since last they'd
met.
Age of Conan: Valeria
I have generally followed the Marvel Chronology Project's order of stories, and I would really like to have the Age of Valeria fit in with Valeria's chronology, but it really doesn't fit.
The MCP
suggested:
Merina’s actual mother dies in childbirth
and she lives with her actual father until the Red Sonja adventure with
her paternal uncle when she’s seven. She’s sent to live with her
adoptive “parents” who die when she’s nine. She’s sent to live with her
brother, who eventually dies. She’s reunited (off-panel) with her
paternal uncle, who finally sends her to live with her maternal uncle,
who tries to marry her off. She becomes a pirate, meets Conan, and
eventually avenges her brother at some later point.
This made sense when I read it,
but when I reviewed the issues, it was more problematic:
...so, to make this fit, I guess the key thing would have to be that
instead of Kirkos sending Valeria to Clesus after two years, he sends to
her to unknown parties who are some other relations that she considers her
(adoptive?) parents before they are killed soon after... but, after
Cassian is killed and she runs off, who would have sent her to live with
Clesus?...If she fled from Antonius, there's no one who would have sent
her to live with her original maternal uncle...who was paid to take care
of her... I agree that it's possible, but I think it is just another issue
of someone remaking a character rather than revisiting her...damnit. Plus,
Age of Conan: Valeria pretty much has nothing to do with the ocean or the
Red Brotherhood.
And the Age of Conan: Belit travesty is a solid
precedent.
