History:
(Defenders of the Earth#4 (fb) - BTS) - Under unrevealed circumstances, Theron became known as the Master of Magic to a Tibetan society known as the College of Magic. Specifically their holiest tome, the Book of Enigmas, would allow worthy pupils to read its otherwise invisible pages to communicate with Theron. When a novice of the College completed his training, he were given the tome in hopes that he would prove to be worthy. However, in their recorded history, no novice had thus far been successful.

(Defenders of the Earth#4 (fb) - BTS) - A youth whose parents' had been killed in an avalanche while on a Tibetan expedition was found and brought to the College of Magic by its monks. After the monks had nursed him back to health, the youth (whose mind had blurred out the memories of the tragic events that had led him to the College) was found to have great mystic potential, which he honed to perfection over years training with the monks.

(Defenders of the Earth#4 (fb)) - When he was given the tome, Mandrake was able to read it. Although some denounced him as a lying outsider and demanded proof, Theron himself appeared before them, declaring that this novice would become his chosen pupil.

    Theron subsequently reopened Mandrake's memories of his parents' fate so that his would be at rest and so that Theron could open it up to so much more: The mysteries of the mystic arts.

(Defenders of the Earth#4 (fb) - BTS) - While no other pupil had approached Mandrake's level of expertise, Theron warned him that others might be envious and strike out at him.

(Defenders of the Earth#4 (fb) - BTS) - Another member of the College of Magic, one who had formerly been Mandrake's friend, was corrupted by the power he found with the Singh Stones and turned on Theron.

    Human in appearance and proportions but accessed only via a mystic tome, it is unrevealed whether Theron was originally human and then traveled to another realm, or whether he was a magical being, such as god or perhaps a native an alien dimension, like Perrionois or Dark Dimension, etc.
    It is not specified, but it seems likely that Dr. Dark slew Theron.

    Defenders of the Earth is an American animated television series produced in 1986, featuring characters from three comic strips distributed by King Features Syndicate—Flash Gordon, the Phantom, Mandrake the Magician, and Mandrake's assistant Lothar—opposing Ming the Merciless in the year 2015. Supporting characters include their children Rick Gordon (son of Flash), L.J. (son of Lothar), Kshin (adopted son of Mandrake), and Jedda Walker (daughter of the Phantom). The series lasted for 65 episodes.

    Marvel published a four issue series under the Star imprint.

   Comic book issues #1 and 2 adapt episodes 1 and 2 respectively, and issue #3 adapts episode 4. Issue #4 is not based on an episode, but serves as a semi-sequel to them - the villain Doctor Dark, a Mandrake counterpart and nemesis, has facial scars at the start of the issue, and checking the cartoon episodes he appears in, he gets those in his second (and final, I think) cartoon appearance.    
    In that issue there's a white bearded mystic mentor who teaches Mandrake magic in his origin flashback. He's called Theron, and only appears in two panels. Theron does exist in the Mandrake newspaper strip, but there he's also Mandrake's father, which is not the case here, as we also see Mandrake's father in the same flashback sequence. In the first cartoon Doctor Dark appears in there's a somewhat similar looking white bearded mage who shows up, but there he's called Vandar.

    Additional Questions (from me) and answers (courtesy of Loki):

Are the cartoon series and the comic book the same reality?

    Maybe. We might permit the slightly different scenes to just be different perspectives on the same overall events, and the name discrepancy(ies) could be ignored as just an error, so it's not impossible to reconcile them.

Could the cartoon series or the comic book be Reality-616?

    The absence of other heroes during the world-threatening events might make it tricky, but that's not an absolute deal-breaker, as we've seen similar stuff in other comics later confirmed to be 616. We can't assume this took place back in the pre-modern era, since on p3, panel 1, Lothar mentions Spider-Man. Whether that's a mention of a real person or the fictional version isn't clarified. Similarly in #4 Doctor Dark calls on "the forces of the Dark Dimension" and later identifies the realm he had been trapped in as the Dark Dimension. Might just be a coincidentally similar name, but it could be considered circumstantial evidence supporting this being 616.
    It'd almost certainly be harder to reconcile the cartoon being 616, given it had more episodes in which to potentially introduce a continuity-clash deal breaker, but if the comic and cartoon are not the same reality then perhaps the comic could be 616.

Snood again: It could certainly be argued that Spider-Man and others exist as comic book characters on the Defenders of the Earth's world and that the Dark Dimension was a coincidentally-named realm. However, I agree, if there's not evidence to contradict the stories, then there's no reason to exclude them.
    If the Defenders of the Earth stories and characters were Reality-616, I wonder about the connection between the locations of the College of Magic and Kamar-Taj and/or K'un-Lun.
