History:
(Best Love I#35/4 (fb)) - In 1943, Vanya Tauhof was a schoolteacher in Pelsutz, Poland during the Nazi occupation. Vanya had pretended to be allied to the Nazi cause but secretly affiliated herself with the Polish underground. The key figure who led the underground was called "Pegley" but although Vanya admired him, she had yet to meet him. To prevent Polish children from being smuggled out of Poland and into Allied nations, the Nazis assigned Polish officer Captain Kurt Helgar to investigate the population. Vanya was present with other teaching staff as the Nazis introduced them to Helgar. Vanya was assigned to serve as Helgar's personal secretary. Vanya found him handsome yet ruthless. After introducing herself to Helgar, Vanya left him to examine his office files.

    While on her lunch break, Vanya met with Mr. Toger of the underground and shared intelligence with him. Mr. Toger warned Vanya that Kurt Helgar had a reputation for dangerous efficiency. Vanya told Mr. Toger to notify Pegley at once so that he could place obstacles in Helgar's path.

    After Vanya returned to the office, she overheard an officer telling Captain Helgar they had picked up a coded radio message on a strange frequency. Captain Helgar insisted on investigating the signal personally and asked Vanya to accompany him. When Helgar received the location of the signal, Vanya recognized it as a hay wagon used by the underground for communication. Captain Helgar went out to the country to find the signal's source but by the time he arrived, the underground had moved the radio unit. Helgar remarked it was obvious they were using a mobile unit and ordered planes to sweep the area looking for any vehicle that might conceal a radio transmitter.

    At the end of the working day, Kurt remarked that Vanya must have had a trying day and invited her out to dinner with him. Vanya accepted and they enjoyed dinner and dancing while Kurt questioned Vanya about her beliefs, remarking that she seemed "so intense" about everything she did. Kurt insisted that all Polish people should affiliate themselves with the Nazis, as the Nazis were certain to win the war. Vanya was careful to choose her words so that she wouldn't seem suspicious to Kurt. While dancing, Kurt and Vanya kissed and were witnessed by a waiter, Peter, who was another underground member. Peter was outraged at Vanya's behavior and rebuked her while Helgar answered a telephone call but Vanya insisted she needed to maintain Helgar's confidence. Peter let Vanya know that they had the final group of children ready to transport out of Poland and would be departing on Friday.

    Kurt escorted Vanya back to her home and told her that he was certain he'd found the woman he loved. Entering her home, Vanya felt conflicted, knowing she should hate Helgar as her enemy yet found she was truly falling in love with him. Her thoughts were interrupted by a telephone call from Peter, who needed to see her. Venturing out to Peter's house, she saw one of the children they were smuggling out of Poland had become ill and needed penicillin. Realizing the best hope for the child was to get them into Allied territory, she resolved that she and Peter would have to get all of the children out of the country that very evening. Peter cautioned Vanya that he mistrusted her feelings about Helgar and that she would have to kill him if he got in their way. Vanya promised she would kill Helgar if need be.

    Although it was after office hours, Vanya knew Helgar would be at work and returned to his office. The doctor that had treated the sick child had reported his visit to the officials, giving Helgar and his allies the exact location of the hidden children. Helgar claimed he wanted to capture the brains behind the operation, not just "the hired help." Once she wasn't being watched, Vanya telephoned Peter and warned him that the Nazis would be raiding his location. She told Peter to get the children ready to cross the river into Allied territory and to bring her a gun.

    Stealing a staff car, Vanya drove through the night, dodging sentry posts and patrols until she met Peter, the children and the other underground members by the shore of the river. They loaded the children into boat and began to cross the river but halfway across, a Nazi patrol boat sighted them and began advancing towards them. Suddenly, a figure in a small motorboat sped towards the Nazi patrol and Peter identified the motorboat's occupant as Pegley. "Pegley" drove his motorboat into the patrol boat, sinking it.

    Unwilling to let Pegley be sacrificed, Vanya insisted they pause to collect him from the wreckage of his boat. After Peter helped Pegley into the boat and then to the opposite shore in Allied territory, Vanya was surprised to discover "Pegley" was Kurt Helgar. Kurt admitted he was likewise ignorant that Vanya was one of his fellow agents in the underground, which was why he had kept up his cover even when they were alone. Vanya realized she and Kurt could be together after all.

    Vanya and Kurt fled together to the United States where they were married.

(Best Love I#35/4) - While waiting for Kurt to finish work one day, Vanya saw children playing in a playground and wondered if any of them were children she had helped rescue from the Nazis. She thought back over the events in which she and Kurt met. When Kurt met her after work, he saw she had been watching the children playing and remarked that if it weren't for them, they would never have met. Vanya agreed, remarking "Thanks to them and a very wonderful man called Pegley-- whom I love with all my heart!"

Captain Kurt Helgar

Captain Kurt Helgar was a Polish officer. During the Nazi occupation of Poland, Helgar was a key figure in the underground, where he was known as "Pegley." At one point, Kurt captured a Polish officer who was a collaborator to the Nazis. Kurt took the traitor's place and used his position to assist the underground. When he was assigned to prevent children from being smuggled out of Poland, Kurt was assigned Vanya Tauhof as his personal secretary. Kurt was attracted to Vanya but didn't know she was a fellow member of the underground. When the Nazis learned the location of the children the underground were smuggling into Allied territory, Kurt helped delay their capture. As the underground's boat full of children were crossing the river into Allied territory, they were spotted by a Nazi patrol boat but Kurt piloted a motorboat into the side of the patrol boat, sinking it. Vanya and Peter helped save Kurt from the water and when they reached the other side, they realized they had always been aligned to the same cause. Kurt and Vanya journeyed together to the USA and became husband and wife.

Peter

Peter was a restaurant waiter who secretly served in the Polish underground. When he caught Vanya and Helgar kissing in an intimate moment, he was outraged, thinking Vanya was flirting with the enemy. Peter alerted Vanya when the last group of children were ready to be transported into Allied territory. When one of the children became sick, Peter and Vanya planned to move up the timetable on smuggling the children to safety. Peter personally oversaw the operation alongside Vanya and successfully rescued the children from the Nazis.

Mr. Toger was a Polish man who served in the underground. He was one of Vanya's contacts and warned her to beware Captain Helgar because of his reputation for dangerous efficiency.
