History:
(Heroquest: The Marvel Winter
Special) - Strom was one of a party of adventurers gathered by
the grand wizard Mentor to retrieve the Sword of Zalmir, a mystical
artifact recently stolen by orcs working for the dark lord Morcar. Along
with the barbarian Zull, elf Galadrus and mage Akron (Mentor's
apprentice), Strom was teleported to the catacombs the orcs had fled to,
an underground labyrinth originally built by Strom's ancestors.
Appearing in a crypt, Strom noticed a chest
by one wall with a strange design on its lock and wondered if it could
contain their prize, so Akron used his spells to try and circumvent the
magic keeping it locked. The chest exploded, badly injuring the junior
sorcerer, but Strom spotted the Sword of Zalmir where the container had
been. Seconds later the tombs in the room began opening, disgorging
zombies, skeletons and mummies. While Galadrus grabbed up both the Sword
and Akron, Zull and Strom battled the undead. Zull disparaged their foes
as no warriors, but Strom pointed out the threat was in their numbers.
The adventurers beat a hasty retreat out the room, with Zull blocking up
the door to keep their foes from pursuing.
Strom and Zull argued momentarily over what way to
go, unaware this disagreement was being caused by a spell of confusion
Morcar had cast over them, observing remotely via a scrying pool. Akron
chastised the pair, pointing out they had to co-operate to survive, and
the group went the way Zull wanted, only to suddenly be beset by orcs.
Strom took this as another reason to berate Zull, stating it was his
fault for choosing to come that way, but the dwarf's whinging was
stopped by Akron again reminding him that dissent only aided Morcar.
Galadrus located a secret door and the group slipped through it into
another passageway; Zull held the door shut against the orc's attempts
to push it open until Strom found some wood to wedge it closed.
However, a new threat appeared, in the form
of a skeletal reaper wielding a scythe. When Zull tried to attack it
easily blocked his blow and injured him with a freezing touch, and Strom
admitted his axe would not prevail against it either, but it recoiled
when Galadrus drew the Sword of Zalmir from its sheathe, and was easily
destroyed by the magical blade. As Strom helped Zull back to his feet
Mentor managed to open a portal to his study nearby the group, and they
used it to escape the catacombs. Back in Mentor's study the mage
congratulated them on their victory, and noted that in working together
they had learned a valuable lesson in the fight against Morcar. To which
Strom responded:
"Yes. Never trust a barbarian's sense of
direction!"

Created by Ian Abinett, Alan Cowsill, Gary Frank and
Cam Smith. Though a dwarf is a standard member of the HeroQuest game's
team, the character is a generic one and not named in the game, so Strom
is unique to the comic strip. In the novels based on the game the dwarfs
have various names, such as Anvil in the Fellowship of Four book that
also came out in 1991.
HeroQuest was a Milton Bradley adventure board game developed in conjunction with Britain's Games Workshop. To tie in with the game's release in the UK, Marvel published a licensed one-shot magazine which included a prose short story ("The Monstrous Regiment") and a comic strip ("United We Stand") based on the game. Despite its success and editor John Freeman's pushing for a regular RPG/gaming magazine from Marvel UK, the characters and setting were not revisited.
