STARSHIP WOLF
Classification: Terrestrial technology
Creator: Unrevealed
User/Possessors: Charlie, Emerson, John, Tockman,
a vampire
First Appearance: Chamber of Chills I#2 (January, 1973)
Powers/Abilities/Functions: The starship Wolf was capable of interstellar travel but apparently journeyed at a rate slower than the speed of light. The majority of the ship's crew were keep in sleeping tubes which held them in suspended animation with only a designated number of crewmen active at a given time. The ship and all of its instruments were constructed from steel and plastic. The crew were armed with handguns called photon blasters. They had access to environmental suits, sophisticated medical technology and computer records drawn from data originally recorded in books. Books that had not been entered into the computer were available in hardcopy.
History:
(Chamber of Chills I#2/2) - In 2180 of Reality-72122, the starship Wolf left Earth and set course for Proxima Centauri. The ship had a crew of 231, of which 199 were placed into sleeping tubes to remain in suspended animation with just 32 awake and active during the flight.
Unfortunately, a vampire stowed away aboard the Wolf and slew crewman Charlie, proving immune to Charlie's photon-blaster gun. The vampire drained Charlie's blood then fled into the shadows before the other crew could discover him.
In the days that followed the vampire continued to feed upon the rest of the crew one at a time. Determining that everything on the ship was made of either plastic or steel, the vampire slew crewman Tockman because he carried a wooden cane, then threw the cane out an airlock so that it couldn't be used against him.
The ship's captain had only a vague memory of what vampires were and the only books that referenced vampires hadn't been entered into the ship's computers. The ship's captain and doctor were the last surviving members of the awakened crew. When the captain finally recalled what a vampire was and determined from the books how to kill it, the vampire had already cornered them both and smashed into their office. The vampire complimented them for their deductive abilities and mused that under other circumstances they could have been friends. Claiming that the thought pleased him, he announced "I believe I'll drink to it!" as he began to feast upon the captain and doctor.
