Powers/Abilities: Mutated by the White Event
known as the Fireworks, Tony Stark developed great intelligence and
inventive genius, as well as the ability to create seeming
technological marvels that shouldn't really work (perhaps because his
mind provided the needed energies).
He created a suit of armor from spare parts that could fly and destroy tanks.
He also created a model sports car out of foil, the size of a man's thumb, that could drive nearly 100 mph.
History:
(New Universal: 1959#1 (fb) - BTS) - Apparently born in 1938 A.D. (see comments), Tony Stark was the heir to Stark Industries, but was otherwise a middling student, and Stark Industries was a failing company.

BTS) <April 26-29, 1953 A.D.> - The skies over North America lit
up in an energy discharge that would later be described as the
Fireworks.

BTS) - Tony Stark displayed a prodigious intelligence and developed the
ability to construct technology years in advance of what existed in the
rest of the world. Stark Industries became re-ascendant.
Stark's first patent submission
was some sort of glowing energy globe, which he later claimed to be a
hoax, for which he apologized.
Before he was 16, Stark was
recruited into an early-admission program at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology (MIT).
Closely monitored by National
Security
Agency (NSA) agents, Stark never attended lectures, visited
the library nor studied in any way, only touching a pen to pass exams.
The
young Stark spent much of his time drinking alcohol and womanizing.
Stark Industries constantly
released technology almost exactly five years ahead of everything
everyone else was working on.

plane crashed in North Vietnam, and he was imprisoned.

With the escalation of other known superhumans, Veronica Kelly and
Lester Robbins, who had a baby together, Project Spitfire members Dr. Luke Randolph, Dr. Joe Swann and Professor
Phillip L. Voight resolved that they had to
exterminate these beings before they eventually threatened humanity.
(New
Universal: 1959#1) <April 4, 1959> - From his office in Naval
Base San Diego, Tony Stark met NSA agents Dr. Swann and Mr. Voight.
After he joking guessed that they were CIA, Swann corrected him and
noted that he was a little intoxicated. Stark replied that it was
appropriate in light of what he had just been through. Swann questioned
the information about his recent crash, capture and escape in Viet Nam,
which Stark confirmed, after which he showed them the armor and told
them that they should see it fly.
At Swann's query, Stark explained
that he had gained the abilities to create such pieces of advanced
technology in 1953 after the Fireworks, and he was bragging about his
foil model sports car, Voight shot him through the back of the head,
killing him.
Swann subsequently noted that they
only had to do that two more times and their problem was over, but
Voight told him that it was only two more, they wouldn't be doing this.

Project Spitfire subsequently slew Veronica Kelly, Lester Robbins and
their infant child.

New Universal
was a re-imagining of the New Universe, with White Events happening
multiple times in the past and the NSA's Project Spitfire attempting to
wipe them out. The main series took place after a 2008 White Event, but
this issue focused on the 1953 event and the NSA's response to that.
It's not 100%
clear, but when Voight and Randolph were discussing Stark on September
15, 1955, Randolph referenced him as 17 in a photograph, noting that he
had been a nothing prior to April 1953. I'm presuming Stark was 17 in
1955.
This profile was
completed 02/14/2026, but
its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25th
anniversary 's celebratory event.
