History:
(Mystic Comics I#5/7 (fb) - BTS) - While Mark Todd was in the Orient the Skull Men taught him "much of their marvelous lore"
(Invaders II#3 (fb)) - In late 1940, reporter Mark Todd was covering the war in China when Japanese shelling drove him into an underground tunnel. The tunnel led Todd to the Skull Men, who shared their secrets with him. They explained their appearance with fiery skulls was to teach people not to be misled by one's physical appearance. While Todd was with them, he learned how to become immune to fire and how to transform his own face to become a fiery skull such as theirs.
(Midnight Sons Unlimited I#9 (fb)) - The Skull Men told Mark that the forces of destiny had brought him to them and that he was to serve as their emissary in "the world of flesh." Assuming the guise of the Blazing Skull, Todd set out to champion their beliefs by stamping out the spread of tyranny, rekindling the flames of hope and fan the fires of freedom.
