Anniversary#1 (fb) - BTS) - This S.H.I.E.L.D. team had an operation in
Marrakesh that apparently was executed in a less-than-ideal fashion (see comments).
(Quake: S.H.I.E.L.D. 50th
Anniversary#1 (fb) - BTS) - A S.H.I.E.L.D. team spent weeks turning over
every slimy rock they could find looking for traces of Norman
Osborn and H.A.M.M.E.R.
All of that poking around turned up
other things, though, notably an A.I.M. base and that was allegedly a
terrorist training camp (see comments).
Captain America requested that Daisy
Johnson be brought up to the "First Team" (the Avengers) for the
mission.
(Quake: S.H.I.E.L.D. 50th Anniversary#1) - The unit leader assigned Schreifels' team to direct support. They were not to move in until first team said so. Civarelli's team was on perimeter, with the instruction that no one got into or out of the area. The leader noted that they were not totally blind, but he would have really appreciated two more days of surveillance. He added that they knew some of what was going on down there, but that they could bet that there was more they did not.
The leader further advised everyone
that this was the first team's show and that while they did not work for
S.H.I.E.L.D., they were nice enough to let them tag along and clean up
after them: "Be ready for anything,
but mostly stay the Hell out of their way."
After they were dismissed, Daisy
Johnson told the leader that he didn't give her an assignment, and he
told her that he thought that they had spoken to her, but that she had
been called up to first team, and he told her to make them proud. She
was confused, but he told her to take it up with the Captain.
(Quake:
S.H.I.E.L.D. 50th Anniversary#1 - BTS) - Daisy
was confused about her role with the team, but she ultimately subdued a
super-strong giant Inhuman who had grabbed Captain America, after which
she followed a youth into a shack, where she encountered Jiaying and a
number of children (all Inhumans). Although Daisy initially refused to
allow them to flee through some sort of teleportal as she at least
believed the place to be a terrorist training camp, Jiaying told her
that they were refugees of an invisible war. Jiayang apparently
recognized Daisy and convinced her to let her transport the kids away
away rather than allow S.H.I.E.L.D. to take custody of them.
When Iron Man arrived and accused Daisy
of letting six suspects escape, Daisy destroyed the teleporter unit.
(Quake: S.H.I.E.L.D. 50th Anniversary#1) - At Iron Man's insistence and with Daisy's refusal to explain herself, Captain America had agent Schreifels and another agent escort Daisy back to the transport plane.
Back at the Swamp, a pair of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents questioned the handcuffed Daisy, who clA.I.M.ed that if there were suspects in the building that they had left before she had entered, and that she had destroyed a device that she suspected may have been boobytrapped.
The other agents noted that Iron Man's report reaised some serious questions about her action in the field, but that Captain America had not filed a report. Captain America interrupted the questioning to speak to Daisy.

Anniversary#1 - BTS) - Cap explained to Daisy that
the role she had played on the mission was to be their conscience, and
he further noted that a reliable source had told him that Jiaying got
the children to a safe place. He then told her that S.H.I.E.L.D. had
found another Hydra base, and that she was to be on the plane, which was
leaving in 10 minutes.

So, this was an interesting story, but
I kind of got the feeling that the writers and/or artists weren't really
clear on the distinction between Reality-616 and the Marvel Cinematic
Universe (which is made even more confusing when the MCU movies keep
referring to their reality as -616; it's not the same reality, so they
are using different systems or something).
This story was really vague on plot; the main point was that Cap wanted Daisy to do what was right regardless of the consequences. Loki provided some input that may help clarify things (his responses in italics):
The group is looking for evidence of Osborn and HAMMER and find other things along the way. The mission is not described, but there are A.I.M. agents and Inhumans there, and Daisy somehow knows that it is a terrorist training camp, but allows an Inhuman woman and similar-looking children to escape because they were allegedly orphans from "an invisible war."
I'm guessing the idea that humans are attacking Inhumans worldwide since the whole Terrigen Mists being unleashed episode.
The Inhuman woman shares the name of Quake's mother from Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. series, but Quake-616 has a different mother. I'm not sure how Daisy Johnson and Jiaying would know each other in Reality-616.
Also no other resemblance to the MCU character other than the name and being Inhuman. But clearly intended to be a reference. I think someone just wanted to bring in some of the MCU stuff but couldn't do it fully because comics' continuity had already established who Quake's mother was.
Since Daisy calls it a terrorist training camp, I'm guess Cap or someone told her that. I don't know what A.I.M.'s doing there other than science/experiments/power-seeking.
Given they didn't know that Inhumans were going to be there, I suspect it's just A.I.M.'s presence. Maybe they were training new agents alongside carrying out experiments.
I know Marrakesh is in Morocco, and I know the Crosby, Stills & Nash song Marrakesh Express, but I'm not aware of any military action or screw-up associated with it. What does the team leader mean when he say, "Let's not have another Marrakesh"?
I'm guessing that "Let's not have another Marrakesh" is just a non-specific reference to an unseen mission, making it clear they've had other missions, not all of which have gone smoothly. Basically, establishing this group has history. While you know I'm no fan of the wikis, they do some things other sites don't, and one is track appearances of locations. Those listings might be imperfect and incomplete, but since no one else does them, they do serve a function. Checking the wiki's listing for Marrakesh shows nothing significant related to S.H.I.E.L.D. except for an episode of the TV series - so at best, this might be a "cute" reference to MCU Daisy's involvement in that story, where she has to kill someone for the first time.
I don't think HAMMER has anything to do with the group, other than it's something they discovered while they were looking for HAMMER.

My thoughts:
S.H.I.E.L.D. and Avengers have been working together to take down threats while also hunting for Osborn and HAMMER. Daisy's team is part of the research side of that. The research throws up threats other than HAMMER - this makes some sense, since the red flags that might indicate the presence of a covert agency like HAMMER in a given region would also go up if a different cover agency is in a region. If your radar is set up to ping when it detects strange land purchases, suspicious movements of mercenaries and weapons, unusual construction that might indicate a covert base being built, etc. then HAMMER, Hydra, A.I.M., etc. will all trigger it. And while they are specifically after HAMMER, they'll move on any of these groups if they locate them. So in go the Avengers, taking down the A.I.M. base. Was it a training camp or an experimental facility, or maybe both? It may have been labelled the former for mission purposes - S.H.I.E.L.D. still has to answer to someone and justify their actions, and saying "I authorised an assault to take down a terrorist training camp" sounds better than "I authorised an assault to take down a lab." Ultimately though, it doesn't really matter what A.I.M. was specifically doing at this location, because A.I.M.'s intentions were never good (prior to Sunspot taking over). Turns out some Inhumans were there too - since they didn't seem to be prisoners, and included children, they weren't A.I.M. by choice so much as refugees accepting any port in a storm. Guessing/extrapolating based on what we know of A.I.M., this refuge wasn't provided out of the kindness of A.I.M.'s heart; we know they are into science, so they probably wanted to study them for any number of hypothetical reasons - learning how to give non-Inhumans powers via Terrigen for example. A.I.M. in the past might have just held them prisoner and experimented on/dissected them, but a softly softly approach might yield better results in the long term - make them guests, not prisoners, and they will cooperate with tests, not try to escape, and encourage more test subjects to come to you voluntarily. All supposition on my part, but it would make sense based on what little we see.

After Daisy had allowed Jiaying to escape with the Inhuman children and then destroyed the transport device to prevent anyone from tracking her, Iron Man demanded she be removed from the site; and when Daisy had nothing further to add, Captain America had agent Schreifels --Quake: S.H.I.E.L.D. 50th Anniversary#1 Note: Neither of the guys who were there to escort Daisy out (and respond to Captain America's instruction to Schreifels) looks like anyone seen in the initial meeting. Presumably as only half of a table was seen, there were perhaps 4-5 more agents off panel, and Scheifels was one of those. I'm not even certain which of the two guys behind Daisy in this image is Schreifels. |
 Smilios was owed $20 by
"Rick" for some undescribed bet. As the mission started, Captain America asked if Rick had paid Smilios yet, and when he replied, "Not yet, sir," Cap told him he would keep Rick extra safe out there. Cap then told Smilios in the future to settle all best before the mission. --Quake: S.H.I.E.L.D. 50th Anniversary#1 Note: Smilios is only confirmed as appearing in this seen. He COULD be the blond guy with the beard seen in the initial meeting and/or the blond guy who was interrogating Daisy. But, we'll probably never know. I'm also not sure who the heck Rick is supposed to be. I don't know if whoever wrote the dialog thought that Rick was the Red Hulk or that Rick Jones was otherwise involved, or whether it was just some other Rick...but why Rick got a first name and Smilios presumably only got a surname? The world may never know. |

the conclusion of the previous mission to the A.I.M. base during
which Daisy "allegedly" allowed Jiaying and five Inhuman children
to escape, two men interrogated her.The blond white guy with the goatee led the questioning (perhaps the "bad cop" in the good cop/bad cop routine), and he made it clear that he did not appreciate "Fury's freakshow. The projects and agents we only ever find out about when they blow up in our faces." The black man stood by the door, occasionally clarifying matters, notably informing Daisy that Captain Rogers had not filed a report. Daisy reported her version of what happened, claiming that the building was empty when she arrived and that she had destroyed the transporter because she thought it was boobytrapped. When the white guy informed Daisy that Iron Man's report raised some serious questions about her action in the field and that her story was not exactly convincing, she told him that Stark's visor may have obscured his vision. He reminded her that Stark had been the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Daisy reminded him that this was past tense. Captain America interrupted the meeting to speak with Daisy. As the interrogators left, the white guy told Daisy that they weren't done there, but she told him that they were. --Quake: S.H.I.E.L.D. 50th Anniversary#1 Note: Names would have been useful. The white guy MAY have been the blond white guy at the initial meeting, although that agent seemed to have sideburns, while the interrogator had a goatee, or a beard with no side burns. It's also possible that he was Smilios...but we'll probably never know. The black guy was probably not the guy who was assigned to watching the Red Hulk, as that guy didn't appear to have facial hair, while the interrogator did. |
