has a medical degree in psychiatry and has genius level intelligence in
developing technology related to conscious states. Possibly due to a
demonic possession, he developed a second personality that, when
dominant, increased his body mass and musculature to superhuman
strength. In this secondary form, he appeared green with mutated
demonic features, heightened awareness of extradimensional
counterparts and violent anger. His usual dominant calm human
personality could shift to
the angry
mutated form at will when under demonic influence; however, Samson
demonstrated this enhanced state only briefly.
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 200 lbs.
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Brown
History:
(Doc Samson II#4/1 (fb) - BTS) - Leonard Samson of
Earth-617 led a
similar life as an ordinary human and specialized psychiatrist as his
Earth-616 counterpart (prior to the latter's gamma-powered
enhancement). He
developed a machine that permitted him and a patient to access a
common symbol-space, effectively the collective unconscious of all
mankind. Samson-617 conducted treatment on this machine with over a 100
patients before inviting Dr. Bruce Banner to treat him of his
transformations into the brutal and unpredictable Hulk, seeing it as a
manifestation of multiple personalities.
(Doc Samson II#4/1) - Using the machine's dual headsets and both lying unconscious, Samson-617 and Banner-617 accessed the common symbol-space. Despite Samson-617 trying to help, Banner-617 was overwhelmed by his fears and transformed into the Hulk to smash the ghosts. But Hulk ripped the fabric of unconsciousness and tore through to the realm of Nightmare of Earth-616. In his domain, Nightmare was powerful enough to kill the Hulk, then interrogated Samson-617 and slashed through reality into Samson-617's treatment room. Nightmare unleashed an invasion of his mighty demon dogs that overran Earth-617. Nightmare revealed to Samson-617 that he would use him and his machine to help attack Earth-616. Samson-617 refused, so Nightmare sent his small demon Energumen to possess Samson-617 and ensure his subservience.
(Doc Samson II#4/1 (fb) -
BTS) - Samson-617 crossed
over to Earth-616, having been ordered to merge minds with Samson-616.
(Doc Samson II#4/1) - Samson-617 entered Samson-616's
office. Discovering his counterpart was gone, Samson-617 transformed
into his second monstrous form (identified as a second personality,
likely from Energumen's demonic possession) and demolished his
counterpart's robot helper Eando.
Samson-617 detected his counterpart's whereabouts and returned to human
form. He killed a motorist to steal his car and drove to Las Vegas
where Samson-616 and his small team (mystic Jack Holyoak, powerhouse
Living Totem and resourceful Tina Punnett) were. Once there, Energumen
(now merged in Samson-617's body) insisted that Samson-616's assistants
had to be eliminated first, although Samson-617 refused to kill again.
Samson-617 locked Punnett in a virtual
reality game pod; he then snared Holyoak and Living Totem in a modified
slot machine that transubstantiated and bound them inside the machine.
Unhindered, Samson-617 went after his counterpart in the casino.
(Doc Samson II#5/1) -
Energumen cast a glamor spell
to disguise Samson-617 so that he could isolate Samson-616. The
outsider chose the identity "Lemme Caution" of the IRS to remove
Samson-616 from the gambling crowd into a quiet room. There, Samson-617
shared part of the truth to lure Samson-616 into using the
consciousness machine and trapping Samson-616 in the symbol-space. With
Energumen sharing his head, Samson-617 transformed into his hulk-like
body and Samson-616 realized his counterpart's collusion
with Nightmare. The two Samsons fought until Samson-616 appealed to his
jealous counterpart's humanity and Samson-617 recovered, ripping
Energumen from his body. Disappointed, Nightmare, watching through the
ripped hole, fired a blast at Samson-617, incapacitating him.
Samson-616 drove off Nightmare and, upon regaining consciousness,
Samson-616 found his counterpart's life signs had terminated and
Samson-617 was apparently dead.

Created by Paul Di Filippo & Fabrizio Fiorentino. Based on the
original Leonard Samson character created by Roy Thomas & Herb
Trimpe.
Samson-616 is a member of the American Psychiatric Association, so it's assumed Samson-617 is too, given the personality divergence seems to be the manner of treating Bruce Banner/Hulk.

CLARIFICATIONS
:
Leonard Samson of Earth-617 has no known connections to:
Energumen was a minor demon in the service of Nightmare of Earth-616. Nightmare sent Energumen inside Leonard Samson of Earth-617 to control his actions as the therapist had inadvertently found a way to breach dimensions. Energumen could activate Samson-617's secondary repressed personality of an angry monstrous form (possibly only manifest when under demonic influence). Energumen merged with Samson-617's body when he traveled to Earth-616 and insisted Samson-617 first eliminate his counterpart's teammates. When Samson-617 and Samson-616 met in the subconscious symbol-space, Energumen traveled also. Samson-617 regained his humanity and ripped Energumen from his body, but the therapist was then incapacitated by Nightmare. Samson-616 then kicked Energumen into Nightmare's chest, pushing the Fear Lord backward through a dimensional hole into his Nightmare Realm.
While Samson-617's human form remained
in the real world and his subconscious appeared in symbol-space, it
appears that Energumen's form traveled from the waking world to the
subconscious world (and then returned to Nightmare's Realm).
